Glasgow 2014 - Queen’s Baton Relay The Queen’s Baton Relay is a symbolic event that heralds the Commonwealth Games that takes place every four years. The baton contains Her Majesty the Queen’s “Message to the Athletes” and travels to the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth over 248 days and 190,000km before being opened and read at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. From Thursday, April 3rd to Friday, April 4th the baton will be relayed across the BVI giving us the opportunity to showcase our sportsmen, women and children, and display our island’s beauty, culture, diversity and hospitality. This exciting event will begin on Thursday at 9am with the official start and introduction of the baton in a ceremony at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, before the relays pass through Road Town. The next leg will start at 11:45am from Capoons Bay and run through Apple and Carrot Bay. It will then be driven to De Wedding from where the relay will be run through Cane Garden Bay. Following this, swimmers from the BVI Swimming Association will escort the baton to the police launch for trans-

portation to Jost Van Dyke. After a relay through Great Harbor at 2:30pm, the baton will be transported to the BVI Spring Regatta where the Tortola sloop, Intrepid will receive the baton and conduct a sail-by in the company of the BVI Optimist Sail Team. The Premier will welcome the relay to Virgin Gorda at the Yacht Harbor at 8:30am on Friday and relays will take place through the Valley, to the Baths and the Bregado Flax Education Centre. The baton will then return to Trellis Bay at 4:30pm before the final relays are cycled, run and walked through the East End/Long Look area, before arriving at HLSCC at 6pm. Here, the event will be concluded with a cultural presentation, closing ceremony and a culinary tasting, showcasing the cuisines of Scotland and the BVI. Ephraim Penn, President of the BVI Olympic Committee, hosts of the event said, “It’s a symbolic relay and we really want to see as many people join in as possible, either as runners or supporters.” For a detailed itinerary of the route and timings visit www.bviolympics.org or contact Cleave Farrington on 542-1007.

Ask Koren How Do I Stop Her From Taking My Child

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, My wife was recently laid off and because she has a green card, she wants us to move to the States to live and that was never a part of the plan. We visit regularly, but I don’t have a green card so I can’t work there and I am not going to live off of any woman. We have had a back and forth about this for three weeks and now she is saying she will go without me. How can I stop her from taking our four year old daughter who was born there with her? – Frustrated

ble stage in her life. If her mom goes without her, that could cause some adjustment problems on her part and are you prepared to be a full time parent of a four year old girl? Looking at all scenarios, ideally, it might be best for the family to try to make it here for now if you make enough to support all three of you. Apart from how hard the transition might be for your daughter, there are also other factors; is a job readily available in the US? Can you both undertake the financial stress of paying rent or mortgages and utilities at two homes? Can you find a suitable school now? Clearly, your wife moving would also affect the marriage as it would be done under some tension seeing you are both not in agreement. If reasoning with your wife and proper planning does not work and she insists on going with the child, there are some US travel laws that prevent children from traveling without the consent of both parents. Check into that with the local US consul. I would hate for it to get to that point because that kind of conflict leaves the innocent child as the one who is suffering the most. Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton

Dear frustrated, It is unfortunate that your wife was laid off but you both have a choice as to how you let this affect your relationship and your life together. You have to work as a team and discuss the situation rationally and weigh the pros and cons of every option. It is understandable that your wife would want to be gainfully employed and feel productive; you need to acknowledge what she is going through and be supportive and understanding of how she must be feeling. Your comment about not living off of any woman is a little harsh…she is not just some woman, she is your wife. As parents, you both have to act in the best interest of your daughter. She is already in a school here, with friends she is accustomed to and a home she knows. Maybe there is even an extended family. However, she also needs her mother at this vulnera-

Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl By Jan Critchley

Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl An aptly chosen movie is this one, and a nod to the hundred of sailors that will be arriving in our small and beautiful corner of the Caribbean to take part in the 2014 BVI Spring Regatta. Of course, we would never suggest that any of our visiting (and resident) sailors are anything but gentlemen, but everyone loves a good pirate story and best of all – it stars Johnny Depp at his finest as the devilishly good-looking and outlandishly funny Captain Jack Sparrow, so grab a rum drink and settle down to

Out of the Box I got to thinking about the term “out of the box” after a recent performance at the H. Lavity Stoutt College by an unusual musical duo called “Black Violin.” These two classically trained AfricanAmerican violin players crushed a lot of stereotypes with their performance by building a bridge that gaps the world of classical and popular music with such genres as, hip-hop, rock and R&B. The elegant stained-wood instruments they artfully drew their bows across denoted orchestral scenes or serious classical ensembles.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

21-Year Title Drought Ends Futility is an integral part of sports. Since interhouse sports began at the Virgin Islands Secondary School in 1957 and continued under a different format after the BVI High School—now Elmore Stoutt—came into existence and the four house format was rekindled, Flemming House-or House 3 has been the most prolific in the area of titles won, with 15 to their credit since 1981. And they were the defending champs. Things again looked good for them after pre sports day events as they took a 23 points lead over Lettsome-House 1 into the main event. Lettsome after all had not been a threat in years. But, it isn’t over until it’s over!! By time the last runner had crossed the line on Thursday, Lettsome had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in inter house sports day history to end a 21year drought by dethroning Flemming, to become victors by a 44 points margin. From using double sprint champion Nelda Huggins in the 800m to raking in contributions from everyone else, Lettsome—who was in a see saw battle with Flemming and trailed, 696-694 with the Long Jump and 4x200m relays left—scored big in the Long Jump then won the bulk of the relays to amass 795 points for their first victory since 1993. It was Lettsome’s sixth title overall. Flemning finished second with 711. Carlisle who won the title in 2012 and was in contention last year, garnered 654 while O’Neal finished with 581. Lettsome ended the second longest drought in school history behind Carlisle who overcame 24 years of futility in 2012. “This feels good. I don’t even know how to explain how this feels, to be on this winning house,” Nelda Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Sprinter Nelda Huggins

Huggins said after running an outstanding second leg on the 4x200m relay that put her team ahead. “I didn’t plan to run the 800m but, I had to give the house some points because we wanted to beat Flemming this year.” Lettsome House master Renee Weston-Joseph teamed up with Sonya Penn, for the wining combination. “This is amazing, its over what 20 years?” beamed Weston-Joseph. “I’m so proud of our athletes who came out and gave it their all.” Down 23 points after Day I, Weston-Joseph said she told her team if they repeat their performances they could be champions. “I didn’t know any of these kids before last month but they came out and performed. I had a good team. Sonya Penn has been here and I must say, even though Bianca (Dougan-Charles) is in Flemming, she gave me tips,” Weston-Joseph noted. “We have so many people who were in Lettsome House, our alumni, they supported us very well. People like Chappy (Glenford Maduro), Steve Augustine and Hon. Marlon Penn. They all supported us. This victory was a total team effort.” 12

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
