This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell

Special Olympics Walk This Saturday the 28th join with athletes from the Special Olympics BVI (SOBVI) in a fund-rising walk dubbed the “Mile of Quarters,” originating at Government House and ending at the Noel Lloyd Park. The procession will be led by SOBVI athletes, carrying the newly dedicated torch, “Flame of Hope.” These courageous athletes, who have overcome physical and mental challenges to compete on an international stage, are raising funds for the 2015 Special Olympics World games held in Los Angeles. The walk gets its name from the symbolic act of the participants laying quarters along the way. This is tied into a simulated line chart designed with the minimum goal the organizers are hoping to achieve. A quarter is an inch wide – twelve quarters ($3) makes a foot and there are 5,280 feet in a mile. If a mile was filled with quarters coin to coin it would make $15,840 in funds. In a similar event when the walk was first initiated in 2009, the SOBVI exceeded its goal and collected $25,000. Organizer Colin Bramble is excited that this year with the assistance of the Governor’s office – law

enforcement agencies and the emergency services including the Red Cross, Fire and Ambulance services have all partnered to help promote the event. Traditionally the Governor’s wife is the patron of the BVI Special Olympics and this year Mrs. McCleary will preside. “The idea of this event is awareness and inclusion, “Colin explained, “and we are happy to see so many people participating. The “Mile of Quarters” walk, which begins at 10 am in front of Government House, is preceded by a breakfast at Bamboushay beginning at 8am. Individual tickets are $30 with a portion of the proceeds going towards the SOBVI. Corporate sponsors are encouraged to buy a table for 10 and send a few company representatives, while sponsoring the remaining seats for Special Olympic athletes and their caregivers. Of the 26 Caribbean countries with a Special Olympics team – only the BVI has a sailing team and Colin is hoping to see a “full crew” of deserving BVI athletes compete at 2015 games. For more information or to donate online go to www.specialolympicsbvi.org or call Colin Bramble at 542-2071.

Ask Koren Why Doesn’t He Leave

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, My father and mother are constantly arguing lately because he has a girlfriend and she found out. I usually sit in my room and put in my ear phones but tonight I couldn’t take it no more and I went out and shouted at him to stop yelling at my mother because she didn’t do anything wrong and he slapped me. In all my 17 years my father has never hit me and I am very depressed. Why doesn’t he just leave and go with her if he loves her and she is causing him to just come home to argue with my mother and now to hit me? –Depressed

perceived your behavior as being rude or disrespectful. Yes, he could have handled it differently, but unfortunately he didn’t. You dad might not want to move out. Maybe he wants to stay right there with you and your mom. If you and your parents had a good relationship before, talk to them about how you feel. Your mom is hurting too, so you both can be there for each other. Letting your Dad know how his behavior affected you will be necessary at some point, but there is no guarantee of how he will react. Because you know them, you will know when the right time is. Talk to someone you trust. Having a support system means that you can share with someone how you are feeling and they can help you to bear the burdens. Do not give in to any urges to do anything inappropriate to cope with what is going on. Refrain from doing things that would make you feel worse afterwards. Remember in life, we go through problems, but we can come out stronger. Hang in there and don’t give up. Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton

Dear Young Lady, My heart aches for you and the pain you must be feeling right now. Your home is supposed to be a secure place and not only is there constant arguing, but now you feel as though your father does not want to be there. People do make mistakes and sometimes they hurt the ones they love the most. I am sorry for what you are going through. We don’t know the whole story with your father, mother and who he is friendly with outside. However, it seems like the pressure is getting to your father and your confronting him could have caused him to lash out at you. While you were standing up for your mother and expressing your own frustration, he might have

The Bling Ring "Let's go shopping" are the first words we hear in Sofia Coppola's wry and fascinating feature film the Bling Ring based on the true story of the Los Angeles teenagers. This is the group, which reportedly burgled the homes of various celebrities, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Lindsay Lohan among them. The Bling Ring is Coppola’s latest and it engages more directly with the worship of fame for fame's sake. It's inspired by the case of a gang of Los Angeles teenagers who broke into the homes of some of the city's celebrities and stole a total of $3 million in jewellery, cash and clothes. It wasn't difficult. Doors were found unlocked and security cameras were easily avoided - until they got really careless. It hardly seems like the most heinous of crimes. After all, Paris Hilton, one of their targets, has so much stuff that she didn't realize she was missing it. They wanted the Gucci, Prada and Marc Jacobs labels on their own backs or they ended up fencing the clothes, jewellery and bags so they could buy more. Displaying the same careless optimism that led their victims to leave their houses unprotected, the thieves even photographed one another wearing the goods and posted the results on Facebook. It was all done in plain sight - although ''plain'' is a word that doesn't really figure in this story. The character dynamic is a very interesting one. Marc (Israel Broussard) meets the others when he and his parents move into a suburb in the San Fernando Valley full of big, boxy houses with immaculate lawns and well-heeled families for whom status matters quite a lot. He's a gentle misfit whose interest in fashion and

show business isn't going to find him too many friends among the nerds, jocks and other male tribes populating his new high school. And he approaches his first day in class warily, keeping an eye out for the school bully. But he gets lucky or so it seems. He's taken up by Rebecca (Katie Chang), a self-possessed Korean-American girl whose obsessions match his own, she later emerges as the leader of this little gang. And from that point things accelerate rapidly. They're soon consulting the websites that keep tabs on the whereabouts of their favourite celebrities and whenever they're out of town, they break into their houses. Before long, the gang has expanded to include Rebecca's friends, dedicated party girls Chloe (Claire Julien), Nicki (Emma Watson) and her adopted sister, Sam (Taissa Farmiga). All of them are delighted at the prospect of launching a new career in grand larceny, and Marc, the only one who expresses any qualms about the possibility of getting caught, is persuaded to calm down and get on with it. There's some entertainment in watching Watson play a mean girl which is a far stretch from her infamous Harry Potter role. To get a glimpse of what the film might have done with these rich pickings, go online and take a look at these characters' real-life counterparts. 11

My Five Movembers contestants, I danced, dipped, and discussed how their very visible method of fundraising initiated conversations about prostate cancer. Even Governor Boyd McCleary, patron of the BVI Movember Charitable Trust, sported a moustache for the cause. The highlight of the evening: reigning Mr. Movember Freeman Rogers’ unprecedented double moustache – a General Lee stacked on top of a Handlebar separated by a thin line of bare lip. In 2011, I resumed my role as a MoSista, escorting competitors by the judges’ table which included celebrity guest judge Sir Richard Branson. By the end of the night, I received a kiss from Sir Richard and the title of Miss Movember. In 2011, the BVI Movember Charitable Trust donated $10,000 to prostate cancer research and began distributing funds to men in the territory affected by the disease. Movember 2012’s theme was Generations— encouraging fathers, sons, and grandfathers to share in the growth. In the spirit of the family theme, my sister Jess, visiting on holiday, enlisted as a Mo Sista while I co-hosted the End of Movember Party with charity cofounder Scott Hart. A resident who had received financial assistance for his treatment spoke to the crowd about the importance of regular screening. Earlier in the month, the Movember Bar Crawl team hung men’s health posters in the bathrooms of BVI bars. This year’s pirate-themed Movember will attract BVI scallywags and salty dogs, happy to raise hair and money for the worthwhile cause. The month of Movember is full of events, including a Pirate Ball and Rum Tasting on November 15.

The 2008 End of Movember Party was the first big social event I attended as a newbie on island. I remember feeling giddy at the gender twist on the pageant concept—the men were being paraded around and judged, not for their beauty but for their moustache (mo) growth over the course of the month. The evening presented a perfect introduction to my new home’s playful irreverence, all done in the service of charity—to raise money for prostate cancer. In 2009, I observed the competition from the sidelines – my leg in an ankle-to-thigh cast – and gleefully basked in the follicled faces shining down from the Nanny Cay stage. My friends dressed up as prickly faced pimps and perverts, and my then-boyfriend won the prize for Lame Mo, showcasing the least amount of upper-lip growth. Moustaches from Tortola, Necker Island, Moskito Island, and Virgin Gorda competed to raise money and awareness for the disease that affects a disproportionate number of Afro-Caribbean men. I volunteered to be a Mo Sista in 2010. What did that entail? Wearing a little black dress and escorting moutachioed competitors across the stage. With the Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Smith Ready To Help Nebraska Basketball For the first time in years, the territory’s basketball fans could be getting an opportunity to see one of our own players on the ESPN network during the upcoming collegiate season. Leslee Smith will begin his basketball career for the Nebraska Cornhuskers with a scrimmage game on the first day of official practice Friday the 27th opening the new Pinnacle Bank Arena. Smith transferred from SMU in Dallas to the Huskers who were 15-18 overall (5-13 in Big 10 Conference play) during the 2012-13 season. Games against Cincinnati and Michigan on Dec 28 and Jan 9 are pegged for ESPN 2. There could be more games seen in the territory as well. Smith returned to the territory for a brief visit for a chance to eat some of mom’s home cooking and visit friends over the summer, but tarry long as he had a plan. “I had the entire summer, so I went to Nebraska early, worked out and tried to get in better shape and that was the main reason I wanted to come up in June and take both summer sessions,” Smith explained. “I wanted to be well prepared for the upcoming season.” Tipping the scales at 260 pound when he arrived in Lincoln, the 6’8” forward dropped his body fat by 3% to 10% and is now 253 pounds. “It’s a big improvement just in two months. I never had a full summer to work out so this is all new to me,” the Long Look resident said. “I’m really pleased with my body and the changes I’ve made. I can feel it too. I’m moving a lot faster and jumping a lot higher.” Smith said the team— which didn’t have a lot of pieces in place last season—is looking good. He said

Leslee Smith dribbles through traffic

they were only able to rotate 6-7 players but should have a full squad this year. “The team is just refined, academically everybody is doing well, there’s no probation or anything so we are on a good track right now,” he pointed out. Smith and his teammates are doing individual practices and getting prepared for official practices that begins on Friday when Cornhusker fans will get to meet the 2013-14 team. “I’ve been doing a lot of sprinting and weight lifting every morning with one day off,” he said. “It has been a lot of conditioning work every day.“ The Nebraska environment is totally different to his experience at SMU, a bigger campus and more students among other things. “It’s a totally different expectation and a different level, and a different expectation, they hold you to a different standard,” he noted. “So I have been pushing more weights than I have been in the last couple years and I’m feeling a lot stronger. So, their expectations and what they demand from me and what they demand out of players is on a different level so it brings the best out of you.” Follow the Nebraska Cornhuskers on www.huskers.com. 13

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
