The Power of You Most of us can get in a rut from time to time, where we get into a routine that is familiar, safe and predictable, and that is fine as long as you are happy. However, for a lot of us, we know deep down that we want more out of life. Whether it be starting our own business, writing that first novel or simply taking that trip of a lifetime - Dr Lynda Reid, EdD, ACC is here to help. Dr Lynda, originally from Canada, first lived in the BVI about 20 years ago. She worked for Cedar School as a teacher when they first opened up their High School and she said, “I learned so much about myself over that time – teaching and living in Carrot Bay was perfect – I just loved being part of that very small very authentic community.” After living here for around three years, Lynda met and fell in love with a writer, Alan Stracke who was here on sabbatical writing stories about the Caribbean and after a short time they moved to Vermont. At that time, she studied for her Doctorate in Multicultural Leadership, which took her to China over a period of three years, taking students there from the US to teach English. Following this, although she knew that teaching
in some way was the key, she started to do some research into related careers and discovered that coaching was the way forward. So, she studied to get certified with both the NeuroLeadership Group and the International Coach Federation. Now, Dr Lynda feels she has found her life’s work and summed it up by saying, “The workshops are a culmination of the best of everything that I have done so far and I know this is what I am meant to do.” The workshops themselves are designed to help you move beyond limitations and barriers and create clarity, purpose and positive changes in your life. The next one, to be held at The Moorings on 6th May is called, “Making Time for Success – Creating Clarity,” which looks at creating balance in your life. It will be followed by two further workshops “Less is More,” and “Focus” (see the Ad on Page 7 for dates) and although the courses work together, they can also be taken individually. So, take the first step and sign up today – you never know, it might just change your life! To book call Dr Lynda on 342-3216 or e-mail her at lynda@kusalallc.com.

Ask Koren How do I branch out as an entrepreneur
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I have been working for over 20 years in the business field and I want to branch out into my own business but my husband is worried about us not having my salary. I get paid well, but I am getting so tired of this job and I think that my business could do well although I know many locals don’t support local business. What kinds of things do I need to consider because I need my husband’s support and want to convince him that we can try? –Potential Entrepreneur
avoid you being stressed and unable to live properly. It may take a while to break even and turn a profit, so have something set aside or start while you are working part-time so you still have a steady income. - You must be consistently committed. You will likely face challenges, you might have to invest a lot of time, make a lot of cold calls or forgo a vacation. Be willing to make sacrifices to see your business grow and thrive but don’t compromise on your family time or your principles. - Have a plan. Identify your priorities, talk to persons who are entrepreneurs or financial experts, have a business plan and a plan A, B and C. It is important that you are clear on the pros and cons of your venture so you make an informed decision and you are aware of possible outcomes. Sometimes answering to our calling and purpose means having to make bold decisions especially if we have gotten used to answering to others or just doing what is expected of us. It takes a special kind of courage to venture out on our own, but the satisfaction is well worth it. Success might not come easy, but do not give up on your dreams.
Dear Potential Entrepreneur, I can imagine your excitement at the thought of being able to have your own business and to give up the regular daily grind. You are wise to seek your husband’s support as financially and emotionally, it can be really taxing to branch out on your own. Many locals support local businesses once your products or services are offered well and you have excellent customer service. Here are four things to consider: - It must be something you are passionate about. You must like what you are doing so much that you enjoy it even if you are not being paid. That passion will keep you going and will fuel your enthusiasm, which will catch on to others and help them to believe in what you are doing. - It must have the ability to bring in an income. Your business must have the potential to be profitable to

African Dreams - A Stellar Performance We are a small island with a large amount of talent, much of which was on display at Saturday’s Cada Players performance of African Dream. African Dream is the latest in a long string of productions by this group which has been in existence since 1997. I have been to many of these performances including ones that were held in a tent on Wickhams Cay near the Cruise Ship dock and as time goes on they get better and better. Their previous two productions of Ringmaster held in 2012 and 2013, was an extravaganza that included music, dance as well as acrobatics by former circus members. I was entranced. Saturday’s African Dreams once again put the islands’ prodigious talent on display. I knew that something special was going to happen the minute I walked into the Briercliffe Hall, which had amazingly, been redecorated. Fabric was hung across the posts in front of the bleachers obscuring them. There were batik hangings with African figures on the stage and a large screen on which video and photo presentations were displayed. New lighting and sound equipment donated to Cada was also installed, transforming the gymnasium-like Briercliffe Hall into a real theater! The show began with a slide show of Harmony House in Haiti founded and run by the non-profit organization “Hands on Volunteers.” The group has taken in 13 orphans of poverty since the devastating earthquake of 2010 upended lives and families. The kids are housed, clothed and educated due to the group’s support and the main fundraiser for supporting their work is Cada’s annual theater production. As the show’s title suggests, the theme is African. A video of majestic African scenery is the backdrop Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
for what is happening on stage. There are 30 dancers and performers, all living in the BVI. Some, like Sarah Penney, Amanda Georges-Downing and Diandra Jones had received dance training in colleges in the states, and several talented young performers attend the BVI Dance School. But most were ordinary members of the community – lawyers, business people, students and graphic artists, among others – representing many islands and countries. And can they dance! Each number, danced to an African beat provided by saxophonist Kamau Georges and a retinue of percussionists, was exuberant, beautifully choreographed and well executed. The costumes were fluid and kept to the theme that ran through the heart of the show based on an African folk tale – who is the greatest, rain, wind or fire? The show-stopper though was a display of aerial artistry by two of the dancers. If you didn’t catch last weekend’s show you have two more chances. They will be performing again this Saturday, May 3rd at 8pm and Sunday, May 4th at 6pm. For more information on Hands on Volunteers and how you can help Harmony House go to www.handsonvolunteers.org. Tickets for the show are available at Vanterpool’s, Watering Hole and Tortola Express or call 494-2324. 14

Barbara Walters Bids Farewell To Daily Television says. “Remember, I’m still doing it. When I leave, Bill and I then have to make a decision as to who we will add to the cast. We want the ladies to get along with them and like them. And I’m not sure we may not want to add a man!” Having joined ABC in 1976, when she became the first female co-anchor on a network evening newscast, Walters has seen many transitions. “I’m sad that we don’t have a regular newsmagazine,” she reflects. “ ‘20/20’ has become a different kind of program, but people’s tastes have changed, and their attention span has changed. Also, I didn’t moderate ‘The View’ because I was doing ‘20/20’ every week; instead, I chose moderators like Meredith Vieira, Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg.” As for the annual year-end “10 Most Fascinating People” special that has been another of her ABC trademarks, Walters admits its future is uncertain. “The network wanted me to do it this year, even though I’m leaving, and I decided I didn’t want to. Truthfully, at the moment, I can’t think of 10 most fascinating people (for 2014). We’ve done so many major leaders of the world, so many huge movie stars ... it’s something that belongs to us, but we’ve made the decision not to do it this year.” Now, with numerous honors including 11 Emmy Awards and a presence in the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, Walters is ready for her next chapter. “You have to leave sometime,” she reasons. “Maybe you don’t, but I think you do. And I wanted to leave while I was still valuable and the audience wasn’t saying, ‘Is she still here?’ This is, for me, a very good and natural transition.”
Barbara Walters insists she’s fine with letting go. The iconic journalist notes that leaving daily television is her call. She’ll do that Friday, May 16 – officially Barbara Walters Day in New York – with her last regular appearance on ABC’s The View “I’m fine,” maintains Walters, who worked at CBS and NBC (famously on “Today”) previously. “Nobody’s forcing me out. It’s not like with David Letterman, where younger people are nipping at his heels. It’s a decision I made a long while ago.” Among other highlights of Walters’ sign-off: a big party in her honor; a gathering of every co-host “The View” has had, on the program’s telecast Thursday, May 15; and the dedication of ABC News’ newlynamed-for-Walters headquarters. The prime-time farewell special is, Walters says, “much more conversation about how I felt about different interviews. It’s not, ‘And then I interviewed him, and then I interviewed her ... .’ I did that a few years ago on ‘20/20,’ so this will be more the background and the untold stories.” Walters points out that she “will continue to be a member of ABC News, so that if there are special things I want to do, I can. The other “View” hosts haven’t treated Walters differently as her on-camera exit approaches, she maintains. “I haven’t felt that it’s affected them at all,” she 15
