Ask Koren Stop Selling Yourself For Things
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I have been involved with an older neighbour since I was 14 years old and he would help me with things I need because my father doesn’t live with us or support us. I’m 17 now and I want to stop with him because I want to start dating this boy I met but I will need some more things for graduation. I’m already stressed about not letting the boy find out about the neighbour and then only to find out from my mother’s friend, that my mother know about the situation. How come my mother didn’t even say anything or try to stop it? –Confused
cares. If you ask your mother about it, be prepared to tell her your side too. I think this a good moment to have some mother and daughter bonding as you forgive yourself and forgive her. You do not have to tell the young man everything about your past because it could be thrown back in your face. Also, do not make the mistake of thinking that all relationships are transactional where you give something to get things. Dating is about enjoying someone’s company and doing fun things together. Start with a clean slate and introduce him to your mother, so that the trust between you and her can be rebuilt. You must also expect that this neighbour will try to offer you more or bigger things to hold on to you and it might seem enticing, but stand firm and let him know that your body is no longer for sale. Everyone makes mistakes but the important thing is to correct them as soon as you recognize how badly it is hurting you. You are preparing to finish secondary school and start a new chapter of your life. Close the doors to your past mistakes and start making choices that will benefit you and make you happy.
Dear Confused Young Lady, You need to make up your mind to stop. If you stay with him just to get graduation things, then after that, you will stay to get things for college or work and it will never end. Make up your mind to break the cycle and have your family members help you with your graduation needs. You are really too precious and special to sell yourself for things. It must be shocking to find out that your mom did not say anything if she really knew. She should have stopped it and reported him to the police. It is a parent’s duty to protect their children. The funny thing about young people though, is that they sometimes rebel when corrected and disciplined, yet that is the very thing that indicates to them that a parent really

Spam for Breakfast I have been thinking about Spam recently. Not the canned meat first produced by the Hormel Meat Company in 1937. But computer spam, the plague of the Internet. Much has been written about SPAM (the meat) over the decades. Mostly it’s humorous. Who can take a canned meat tinted pallid pink and of amorphous texture seriously? There have been books about SPAM, magazine articles about SPAM and even a Monty Python musical called Spamalot. I recently learned that the word spam (as in junk mail) may have been inspired by a 1970 Monty Python skit about what else? SPAM. In this skit all the restaurant’s menu items are a form of SPAM. When a waitress repeats the word SPAM, a chorus of

Demystifying Sailing We are in “the sailing capital of the world” so, why aren’t more people sailing? “Sailing has traditionally been viewed as an exclusive sport and it can be seen as exclusive if you are not actively involved in sailing,” noted Brian Duff, Director of Sailing Development at the Royal BVI Yacht Club at Sunday’s end of the BVI Dinghy Championships. “We have brought in Bounce to help us because we are working to make it more accessible and more interesting to people.” During the championships, there was a lounge, open bar, bands and different shows to try and draw people in, so they had an opportunity to speak to sailors, coaches and instructors about ways to get involved in sailing. Duff said for a low fee, one can join the Royal BVI Yacht Club and have access to instructors and get out on the water. “That’s really what the BVI Dinghy Championships was really about this year – trying to get people’s attention, acknowledge sailing, to see it and become comfortable with it and think about participating in it,” Duff explained. “That’s what we want. We’re in the BVI. People should be sailing.” The annual individual membership fee is $250 for adults over 30; $155 under 30 and this entitles one access to all the sailboats the club has, instructors and the network around that. Family membership is available for 2 adults plus children under 18 for $450. There are two qualified Royal Yachting Association instructors who can teach anything from sailing powerboats to kite surfing and anything in between. There’s a fleet of 27 boats in the club – from five-person IC24s to Lasers and Optimists for kids. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

“One can use all that is here and it’s paid for by our fundraising. Instructors are paid by our fund raising efforts and the tuition charge is low – typically $25-$45 for half or whole day – the fund raising is being done to make it possible for people to join in,” Duff noted. When he arrived five years ago, Duff said he came imagining that with the BVI being dubbed the sailing capital of the world, everybody must be sailing here, but after he arrived he realized that it’s predominantly tourists sailing here, while the people living here haven’t found the water accessible. “I’ve been working over these last five years to make sailing accessible to people, to beak down the costs, to break down the barriers and get everyone working together and on the water,” he said. “I would love to see on Tuesday or Sunday afternoons, 30 adults coming down, rigging up boats and going out sailing. That’s what I’ve been working for. I don’t know why they’re not here and that’s perhaps because they don’t know it’s available.” Interested in getting involved in sailing?
