This Week’s Feature Story by Claudia Colli

Fisherman’s Day Celebrates 25 Years One of the oldest industries in the BVI is fishing. For centuries fishermen have set sail in small wooden fishing skiffs to harvest the ocean for seafood to sell at market and to feed their families. Each year the BVI Department of Conservation and Fisheries acknowledges our local fishermen’s contribution to the islands and the vital role they play in our economy with a day in their honor. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Fisherman’s Day this year will be twice as much fun with two days of parties and activities planned at Long Bay Beach, Beef Island. The action starts on Sunday, June 29th at 4am with the first day of the annual twoday fishing tournament. Family and friends can help the fishermen celebrate their catch starting at 2pm with a pre-Fisherman’s Day beach party that will include entertainment by local DJs and Show Time Band and a weigh-in between 4:30pm and 5pm. Day two of the fishing tournament begins on Monday at 4am and the beach party starts to crank

up at 11am. Non-stop activities will include a fashion show, soldier crab races for kids, and the mouthwatering Vendor’s Fish Cook-off. Young and old can participate in the Sand Shark (Sand Sculpture) competition with categories for ages 5-11 and 12 and older. To keep things lively, music is being provided by Venemous Poizon Band and local DJs. The Fishing Tournament weigh-in will take place at around 4:30pm and the awards will be presented shortly afterwards. So you can remember this great day for years to come, 25th anniversary commemorative T-Shirts will also be on sale. Fisherman’s Day is being held in conjunction with Environment Month, and the Department of Conservation and Fisheries will feature an environmental display to mark the occasion. One of the highlights of the summer, Fisherman’s Day is fun for the entire family, and an event not to be missed. For further information contact the Department of Conservation and Fisheries at 494-3495.

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Employee Changing for the Worse

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I have an employee who has been with my company for about 12 years and she is the most senior employee. Lately she has not been herself; she takes longer to finish things I ask her to do and just answers OK instead of OK with my name like she used to and she take her time when I call her in to my office. It’s almost like she is a bit disrespectful. I asked one of her coworkers if something is wrong with her, but she said she didn’t know. I don’t want to fire her because she knows the ropes of the business, but she is not functioning like before. I would appreciate your opinion. –Employer

outside help and even offer to pay. Maybe she is having problems at home, maybe her health is affected or maybe you could even have done something that could have killed her motivation. So clearly, you need to also check yourself and you could also come right out and ask if something on the job is affecting her negatively. If our car works differently, we take it to a mechanic; we don’t just throw it away. How much more careful and caring should we be of a human being and especially one who has served you faithfully for twelve years. Firing should not even be an option right now. The employee’s wellbeing should be the priority. Could she be tired because of all the weight of the work placed on her? If after your intervention, there is not much change and the employee shows further decline, then you can consider having another employee work closely with her to learn what she knows and give some support. If she is making a lot of serious errors, then you would have to consider stronger action. Whatever you do, the employee must see that you care about her wellbeing and not just your business and profits.

Dear Employer, It is a good practice to be observant of employees so I must commend you for that. I would advise you to call the employee into your office and talk to her so you can have an idea of what is going on. I don’t know how old she is, but sudden changes in a person’s mental and physical behavior could signal that something is wrong. I understand you would not want to be too intrusive, but you could ask casual questions and observe her non-verbal communication also while she speaks. Based on her responses, you could suggest that she see a doctor or a counselor. If a person’s performance on the job is not what it used to be, it is okay if an employer suggests gently that the person seek

Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl By John Crook

Netflix’s Red-Hot ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Returns for Second Season During her long career, Kate Mulgrew has portrayed an impressive gallery of strong women, ranging from movie legend Katharine Hepburn to Capt. Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager. Nevertheless, the veteran actress says she has a special place in her heart for Galina “Red” Reznikov, the tough but vulnerable inmate she plays in Orange Is the New Black. Netflix begins streaming the entire 13-episode second season of the critically acclaimed prison drama. “Red is a broad, wide and deep canvas,” Mulgrew says of her current role. “There is none of the patina of the other characters I have played. She is not particularly gracious. Her attractiveness does not leap out. What grabs you by the throat is her absolute lust for survival and for what she considers her level of excellence. That is what you see within this very bleak environment of Litchfield Women’s Prison.” Adapted from Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same title, Orange is packed with rich, fascinating female characters whose personal histories are only gradually being revealed. In the first season, few of them were more powerful than Red, the prison kitchen manager who ruled her culinary fiefdom with an iron fist. Cross her, and you risked being

starved to death, as prison newbie Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) discovered to her dismay. By the end of Season 1, however, Red suffered a major reversal of fortune, losing her kitchen job and falling out of favor with the other inmates. As Season 2 opens, she is grappling with loneliness even as she lays plans to make a comeback somehow. “You must always remember one thing about Red: She never gives up,” Mulgrew says. “There is always something strategic going on. ... If you remove the component of loneliness, which is very real, Red is determined to scratch her way back up. She is no kid. Time is passing quickly by, so her brain is always turning, turning, turning.”

It’s a Small World We all have small island stories. My first came shortly after I moved to the BVI from NY and I dialed a wrong number. “Claudia? Is that you?” was the reply on the other end of the line. I was soon engaged in a long conversation with a person I knew well, but who wasn’t the person that I meant to call. How many places in the world can you dial a wrong number and get someone you know? In the BVI, it seems, it’s a common occurrence. And of course the opposite happens. The phone rings, I pick it up and someone says, “Oh, sorry Claudia, I’ve dialed the wrong number – but while you are on the line, did all this time is gratifying. An old friend becomes a

Caribbean Basketball Championships Showcase Basketball lovers from throughout the region living here – from the Bahamas to Guyana – will have a chance to witness the Caribbean Basketball Championships Men’s and Women’s tournaments at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, starting on July 1. In the 22nd edition of the Men’s tournament eight teams – the Bahamas, Cuba, U.S. Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Barbados and host BVI—will be seeing action through July 5 when the CBC champion is crowned in the showcase event. Three of the teams will advance to the Centrobasket tournament in August. The BVI first hosted the tournament in 2009 and advanced to its first Centrobasket tournament in its history when they finished second. The U.S. Virgin Islands are the defending champions and had a first round loss to the BVI. What’s the BVI looking for this time? “I look at the 9 o’clock game on July 3 with the U.S. Virgin Islands as the championship game of the first round. We have a rivalry between us,” BVI Basketball Federation President Guy, “The General” Malone noted. “There are players on their team – Jason Edwin and I think his brother Deon – we miss out on those guys because they were born in the USVI. But, they are bred and grown right here in the BVI. They play on Legs (in our league) with Kennedy Bass and have played with Steve Parillon. Bass, Parillon, Leslee Smith and Kleon Penn are on the BVI team and they beat the USVI two years ago in Centrobasket in the Dominican Republic and it didn’t rest well with USVI president Usie Richards, so we are expecting big things from this game.” Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Kelvin Samuel from the BVI with ball & BVI resident Jason Edwin

Malone said he attended the recent FIBA Americas Congress in Puerto Rico and the trash talking began in earnest there between the USVI, BVI and the other countries. Malone said it would mean everything to beat the USVI at home. “It’s important to beat them,” he said of the Group B matchup. “When you look to cross over to meet the other teams, one of the teams in Group A is Cuba who will send their very best. If and when we beat the U.S. Virgin Islands, it puts us in a good position to avoid playing Cuba for a position in the playoffs, that’s how important it is for the BVI to beat the U.S. Virgin Islands.” Then from July 8-12 the BVI for the very first time, hosts the 21st Women’s tournament. The Women’s bracket includes: the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and U.S. Virgin Islands. A new champion will be crowned as defending champion Cuba will not participate. 14
