This Week’s Feature Story by Jan Critchley

Gearing up for “Iris Freeman Festiville” This year’s Emancipation Festival is going to be more exciting than ever and everyone is encouraged to jump up and join in to celebrate the 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of Festival from July 28th to August 9th. The Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee have been working hard to ensure that this year’s festival will have a program of activities that will highlight the significance of this milestone event by looking back to where we came from and where we are at today. The Festivals grounds will once again become the heart of the celebrations, and will be the venue for many of the international and local artists as well as the much-anticipated Calypso competition where “Sister Joyce” will be defending her crown. The food at the festival village is also a major part of the enjoyment, the appetizing smells that fill the air, tempting festival goers to try out the many types of food on offer from the food booths lining the grounds. This year, long-standing booth owner, Ms Iris Freeman will be honored for her dedication to providing some of the best local food in festival village by naming the venue the “Iris Freeman Festiville.” Iris, a retired civil servant, worked at Peebles Hospital for 26 years as a cook and it was

her love of cooking that inspired her to have a booth in the festival village and to open a small take out restaurant “Iris’ Place” in Fahie Hill in 2006. Iris has been cooking from Booth #6 since 2003, before taking over ownership with her son Aubrey in 2005. At her booth you can enjoy local food such as corned pork, conch in butter sauce, whelks, goat head soup, conch soup, mutton, boiled fish and fungi to name but a few. She is also one of the remaining cassava bread makers in the BVI who is trying to keep the tradition alive. In addition to great food at festival, we can look forward to annual favorites such as the Prince & Princess show, the Miss BVI Pageant, two rise and shine tramps in Road Town and one in East End, the much anticipated August Monday Parade, horse racing along with the Annual Rotary Kiddies Fiesta and the East End/Long Look and Carrot Bay Cultural Fiestas. There are also some new events slated for this anniversary year including fireworks and a Miss Junior BVI competition. So get ready for festival and some great local food – take part in the activities, dance to the music and enjoy the celebrations that will make this special anniversary festival one to remember.

Graduates

Ask Koren

Dear Recent Graduates,

all your other activities. Bring all the lessons on time management and setting priorities that you have learnt in school with you into your next venture. Go on forward and upward then, using these skills and the others you have achieved to work towards your goals, develop yourself positively and make this world a better place. To the parents and guardians who have made so many sacrifices; financially, with your time and who have supported your children in their efforts for success, their achievement is yours to share. You might have played a part in instilling discipline in them, ensuring they stayed focused and setting examples of the value of work and persistence. You turned off the television when you had to, denied certain privileges and were probably hated sometimes, but you knew that you were molding a child for success. Congratulations active parents for the role you played. To the students, their parents and guardians, their teachers and anyone else who would have had a hand in their journey and the exciting culmination, I say congratulations and job well done!

Congratulations! You have stayed the course when the work was hard or you had limited supplies; you endured many nights with little sleep and many occasions when you wanted to give up, but you didn’t. Now that you have accomplished such a great milestone, the journey is not over as yet! There are more worlds to conquer and new milestones to reach; on to college for some or the world of work for others. Many of the lessons that you have learnt in school can equip you for life; here are three: Team work – having to work in groups, learning to share and trying to get along with those who are different from you are excellent ways to practice teamwork. This is a valuable life lesson as you have to coexist with others and the better you are at that, the easier your life and theirs will be. Problem solving – solving math problems, resolving conflict with teachers and other students and being able to figure out what needs to be done and when, helps you to develop critical thinking skills and encourages creativity. The ability to face a challenge and find workable solutions instead of giving up is essential to life. Time management – there is no doubt that as a student you were expected to balance school work, television watching, Facebook time, family time and

Cruising the Caribbean Living here in the BVI, we all get very used to see-

around the ship that gave it warmth and style as well as comfort. My favorite spot was around the uncrowded pool area, where there were oversized sun loungers with pure white, fluffy toweling covers and covered cabanas for two. What struck me the most was the attention to detail – everywhere. You would turn a corner and there was the most comfortable library area where you could wile away an hour or so in the overstuffed leather sofas. Then walk a little further and the smell of freshly brewed coffee lulls you towards the Baristas Coffee bar. When it was time to have lunch, we were seated in the elegant grand dining room, and were served a seven course lunch. Each course was paired with a suggested wine and everything was superb. In addition to the grand dining room there were six other restaurants including their exquisite French bistro, the Asain Red Ginger, and La Reserve where guests could enjoy private vintage wine and gourmet fare pairings. As our time was coming to a close on the Riviera, we regrettably had to leave – however I could have easily become a stowaway on this stylish vessel.

ing cruise ships in Road Harbor during the summer months and although I had seen a lot of ships in port – I had never stepped foot on one, so when my coworker, Arlena and I were invited to visit one of Oceania Cruises flagship vessels, Riviera we were both excited to take a look. I had my own view of cruise ships that had developed over time and based on some of the larger ships that we see here most often, they could look a little showy with their plastic slides & colorful paint jobs. However the ship we visited was in a different league. When we arrived at the Cruise Ship Dock, we were met by Oceania Cruise Lines’ International Representative, Karen Negrón, who welcomed us aboard the Riviera. Karen explained that what makes the Riviera different, is that it is a mid-sized ship, built in 2012. The magic is in the fact that it takes only 1,250 guests, which ensures that there is unparalleled personal service. And there are designer touches everywhere from the magnificent Lalique Grand Staircase to the rich fabrics and soft lighting and art masterpieces

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler Harrowing and moving, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler recounts the true story of Irena Sendler (Anna Paquin), a young Polish Catholic social worker ministering to the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Poland had been invaded by Germany and while many Poles turned a blind eye to the horrors occurring in their city, Irene saw first hand their suffering and degradation. Food and water was scarce, and often dozens of people were crammed into tiny apartments. In spite of the indignities, they hung onto their tenuous existence with as much pride as they could muster, keeping up their family and religious traditions. But it was the plight of the children that moved Irena the most. Young innocents, they did not understand what was happening, or the danger that they were in. When the Nazis decreed that only medical staff could have access to the Ghetto, Irena and a group of her colleagues ignored personal danger, and donned nurses uniforms so that they could continue to tend to the Ghetto’s inhabitants. Irena, though, refused to believe that she was doing enough. As it became evident that the Jews were being deported to the death camp, known as Treblinka, Irena’s mission became more urgent. In response, she devised a plan to rescue as many Jewish children as possible and send them to live in the homes of sympathetic Polish families. This was no easy task. The Ghetto’s entrances were well-guarded but Irena and her colleagues Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

found holes within the walls to whisk the children through. They were hidden in boxes, carried out in carts and taken out in ambulances. One baby was concealed in a covered basket. Each child was given a false identity card with a new name showing him or her to be Polish Christian; they were taught to hide traits that might give them away as a Jew. Many parents refused to give up their children, and other families, along with some of the rabbis who object to handing them over if they had to suppress their Jewish identities. For the most part Irena’s pleas to save the children prevailed despite the heartbreak. As the war carried on and the deportations accelerated, Irena and her colleagues were increasingly in danger. Although Irena was eventually captured, (turned in by a former colleague), and tortured, she would not give up the names of those that helped her or the families who had taken the children in. With the assistance of Polish partisans, Irena eventually escaped from prison. In all, Irena saved the lives of 2,500 children. A monumental effort. Throughout, she kept careful records of each child and the family that they lived with on small slips of paper stored in a jar, so when the war was over if any family members had survived, they could be reunited with their families. Sadly few were. Irena Sendler, who died in Warsaw Poland at the age of 98, was the recipient of numerous awards for her humanitarian efforts. Available on Netflix and at Amazon.com. 12

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution. 13
