Tarrus Riley Live in Concert December 13th @ 9pm
Also this week: hlsCC Christmas Concert • Christmas in spanish town • save the seed Christmas tree lighting
This Week’s Feature Story by Jan Critchley
Tarrus Riley Rocks the BVI artist and he has consistently racked up awards for his singing and songwriting talent. His second album Parables almost single handedly heralded a roots reggae renaissance and featured the massive hit single, She’s Royal, which made Tarrus Riley a household name. She’s Royal, became the most popular reggae song of 2007 and won almost every music award for which it was nominated including a six trophy royal sweep at Jamaica’s inaugural Reggae Academy Awards in February 2008. His latest album, Love Situation released earlier this year is a combination of smoothly crooned lover’s rock, artful Rastafarian declarations and dancehall’s combustible edge. Its cohesion provided by Tarrus’s spectacularly emotive vocals and reliably inspiring words reaffirm him as one of the finest singer/songwriters of his generation. Don’t miss this remarkable roots reggae artist on Saturday, 13th December at 9:00pm at the Festival Village Grounds. Tickets are $35 in advance from Bolos or splash out and get VIP tickets for $100.
Don’t miss the master of Lovers Rock himself, Tarrus Riley who will be playing alongside other artists such as B’More, Drastic, Macabee and VIBE on Saturday, 13th December at the Festival Village Grounds. Headliner, Tarrus Riley (born Omar Riley) is the son of veteran Jamaican singer Jimmy Riley, formerly of the vocal trio, The Unique. Born in 1979, Tarrus recorded his earliest singles as a teenager on his father’s “Love and Promotion” label, but it was his mother who played the premier role in encouraging his musical talents; she suggested he adopt his birth sign, Taurus (later tweaked to Tarrus), as his stage name back when he was DJ’ing over dancehall beats. Grounded in a roots reggae tradition Tarrus said, “I first came into this music as a DJ, but when I started writing songs and really learned about music, I started to appreciate singing and songwriting more.” You could say that music is in his blood, as he made his recording debut as a teenager. In 2004 he released his debut album, Challenges and since then, he has made a name for himself as a major reggae

I’m No Ass Kisser Ask Koren
Dear Koren, My mother has an uncle who live in the States for years and he is rich. She always nicing up to him and it makes me sick because he is not a god. Sometimes he send a barrel and the things are close to expiry and how she react you would think he sent the sun and moon. Now he is getting ready to visit and she told him to stay with us instead of at the hotel, so we have to give up our room and she putting herself in expense trying to fix the room for him. We can’t afford to feed him. She wants me to be nice to him so he can help me to go to college when I graduate next year. I am very upset about him staying with us. How do I deal with my great uncle when he comes? –Frustrated
knows that she can only do so much for you and with her loving heart wants to give you more. In her mind, this uncle can help. There is no need for you to worship this man or his possessions and there is absolutely no need for you to feel like you are selling your soul just to get some help. However, there is a need for you to be respectful of your mother and to try to see things from her point of view sometimes. Giving up your room for a week or two will not kill you and it’s what family does for each other. Also, being generous is a good quality to develop. Allow your mom to be happy in her way and to feel as if she can give back something to this man that has helped her in the past. If you have concrete reasons why you are so against him, then discuss it with your mother before he comes. If he makes you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason, let her know. If it’s just that you don’t like her appearing to be weak or dependent, then find the right time to discuss that. In the meanwhile, be thankful that you have family who actually care for each other and stick together.
Dear Frustrated, It sounds like there is more to this story. Why are you so against this uncle? I would like for you to be honest with yourself and figure out why you have such strong feelings about this man. Maybe your mom is grateful to him for what he has done for her in the past or maybe she has a lot of respect for him. I do admit that some persons are more “starstruck” about wealthy family members who live overseas than others. Maybe you think that your family has the potential to manage by yourselves and don’t need a fairy god-father. Your mom however,

Living the Dream “How are things in the islands?” is a question often posed when I visit the frozen north to visit friends and relatives. Though I try not to do this during the winter months for obvious reasons, there are elements (like doctors’ visits) that conspire to make visits to the snow inevitable. This year Betty and I started off in South Carolina in late November for Thanksgiving. It was colder than I would have liked but not too bad. My daughter Sharon has turned into a speed knitter, and crocheted two scarves for us in lightning time. I bundled up in one of these to accompany my 14year-old grandson to a nearby lake to fish. We stood on a small wooden dock while the wind whipped around my knees as he cast his line. I pretended to be disappointed when he lost hook, line åand sinker on a submarine tree root. We hurried back to the warmth of the house while he speculated about whether it had been a root or some mammoth catfish. A few days later we headed north to Connecticut. The snow recently dumped on the east coast had mostly melted. Now there was just freezing rain. “How are things in the islands?” asked the nurse at the doctor’s office. “Pretty nice,” I told her, adding that we’d be back there in a few days. “Could I come with you?” she asked. Another thing about winter in the north is that it
gets dark around 4:30 pm and with slur beating on the windscreen and oncoming headlights, driving conditions are not good. It makes planning your day important so you can get home in daylight. Betty’s sister threw a party while we were in town and when things filtered down to a few friends and relatives, we went around the circle and asked how people met. “She winked at me in the college dorm,” said the male half of one couple. “He so dreamed that one up,” said his wife. “I met Betty when her charter boat sailed up to my dock,” I said, adding a few details about sailing adventures and being kidnapped by charterers dressed as pirates. Everyone looked at Betty expecting a rebuttal but none came. I guess we were lucky enough to have lived the dream.

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
