Dancehall King Popcaan Live in the BVI International Dancehall King Popcaan is set to perform for the first time in the BVI as the headline act for the Mardi Gras Fest this Saturday, May 23rd in Cane Garden Bay. The Jamaican dancehall artist currently signed to Mixpak Records, grew up in Portmore, Jamaica. From the age of seven years old he trained himself as a vocalist and performer and has been following his musical calling ever since. His breakthrough came in 2010 with the hit song Clarks, a collaboration with fellow Jamaican dancehall singer Vybez Kartel. The song achieved international success, causing a worldwide spike in sale of the British shoe “Clarks.” In 2011, Popcaan received the excellence in music and entertainment award for best new artist, and collaboration of the year for Clarks, which also won song of the year – in the dancehall category. At the end of January 2012, Popcaan released a new mixtape, Chromatic presents Yiy Change – the follow-up to his 2010 mixtapes Hot Skull, Fry Yiy and Boil Brainz. In March of that year Only Man She Want gave Popcaan his first billboard entry at No. 89 on Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop Charts. The song was later
officially remixed by rapper Busta Rhymes. He was also featured in The New York Times speaking on the growing impact of Only Man She Want and the growing influence of dancehall music in the industry. Popcaan has been touring extensively since, in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and the South America region. While in Canada, Popcaan connected with Canadian rapper Drake, who has publicly expressed his admiration for his music and talent. In 2013, he released the video for his hit Unruly Rave, which was shot in Toronto. His debut album, Where We Come From, was released by Mixpak Records in June 2014. The project was executiveproduced by Dre Skull and has seen several hits from the album. The first single released Everything Nice has been a big hit throughout the Caribbean and the world. Don’t miss your chance to catch this dynamic performer at one of the most highly anticipated shows to hit our shores. Tickets can be purchased from Hazem’s Beauty Supply and Bolos and are $30 in advance or more at the gate. There will also be a shuttle bus service available from Road Town taxi stand.

My Children or My Husband
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, A few months ago my husband hit me after an argument and because I reported it, he left the home. I really love my husband and we have been married for over 10 years. We recently started talking again and he wants to come back and I suggested counseling and he agreed after some persuasion. The problem is that the older children I have, who are not his, help me financially and they are behaving funny and saying I should not take him back – so now I am hiding to talk to my own husband. They think that he will hit me again or leave again. What should I do? –Uncertain
People can change and improve and just because someone does something once, does not automatically mean they will do it again. I think the counseling is a good idea to be able to discuss certain things objectively and come to certain decisions before he moves back into the home. Even if he agrees just to get back into your good graces, his behavior after that will demonstrate if he is serious or not. Your marriage vows say for better or for worse. None of us are perfect, so nothing at all is wrong with you giving him a second chance. The problem will come if you end up giving him chance after chance and he keeps hurting you. Tell your children, ‘I love you all, I appreciate your support and love, but I want to try this on my own. If it doesn’t work, at least I know I tried.” You have a right to be happy and you have the right to choose what and who makes you happy. You don’t have to choose between your children and your husband; you can have them all when you choose love. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com. Your confidentiality is assured.
Dear Uncertain, It sounds like your children do have your best interest at heart and do not want to see you get hurt but they should still respect the fact that you are an adult and have the power to determine what is best for your life. The decision about taking back your husband has to be yours alone. Them helping you financially should not impact your decision because if they truly love you and you need the help, they should give it regardless of whether he is around or not; unless you use their money on him. That being said, him hitting you is a very serious offence and you should never, ever tolerate physical or any other sort of abuse from anyone. If you choose to forgive him, that is fine, but you should make it clear to him that that behavior is not acceptable.

Live-Aboard Pets Keeping pets aboard, with a live-aboard boatlifestyle may not be for everyone, but the lifestyle itself is not necessarily for everyone, either. A serious question would be is it fair to the animal, to force it into this way of life, just because it is the lifestyle you’ve chosen? I can speak from experience to this, it is not only doable, but can be beneficial to both the human owners and the beasts themselves. Dogs are decidedly more of a challenge than cats. They require exercise and stretching their legs on a fairly regular basis and are more difficult to be left alone unattended. Plus, they need to “ake care of business” on land, unless you’ve trained them really well to use the head. (Yes, this has been done.) They are nonetheless great companions, great for guarding your vessel, are generally good-natured, and don’t complain much about their living conditions. Size of the animal can be at issue, as well as the breed, some are suited better for this lifestyle. Can the beast get up and down the companionway steps? Quarantine issues need to be dealt with, too, but I guess that goes for any/all beasts aboard. Entry into foreign countries needs to be explored, especially with dogs, as they do need to get off the boat on a regular basis. Cats, on the other hand, seem to almost rise to the occasion of the live-aboard boater lifestyle. They are low maintenance, they tuck themselves into the most comfortable leeside of the boat they can find, and really don’t complain much, at least that we humans can hear. Cats are generally more agile than dogs as well, making it easier for them to navigate around the boat if you’re underway. And probably the Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
biggest bonus, the litter box is easier to deal with than having to take them to shore a few times a day. Cats won’t cramp your lifestyle as much; they require less, “maintenance” than dogs. Cats generally won’t be getting off the vessel, so that may make it easier on entering foreign countries. Buddy (or BuddyKatz as I call her – yes, she’s a she) is my cruiser friend David’s live aboard companion, and has proven herself to be the perfect pet to have aboard. She is well-mannered, affectionate, clean, sweet-natured, and is a friend not only to David, but to all who come aboard. (He calls her an equal opportunity cat). Watching BuddyKatz as she handles pitching and rolling seas is a joy in and of itself. She truly leans into the swells, and stands at an angle. It is a true sight to behold. Considering the interior of David’s boat is red crushed-velvet, the only issue I’ve noticed is her shedding. She is mostly white in colour, and to say the cat fur shows up on everything would be an understatement. But to my knowledge, she has lived aboard various boats of David’s the better part of her 14 years, so it is the lifestyle she knows. And she seems to roll with it quite well. 10

Wolf Hall If Thomas Cromwell, the 16th century lawyer and advisor to Henry the Eighth lived in 21st century America, would he have been Olivia Pope – the ultimate Washington fixer? The one who made the problems of the Washington elite and politically powerful disappear? In the popular Showtime series, the Tudors, Thomas Cromwell was the supporting figure to the dashing, handsome and lascivious serial wedder (and wife beheader), Henry the Eighth. In Wolf Hall the PBS six-part mini-series, Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) is the central character. The ultimate Renaissance fixer, it is Cromwell who makes it all happen for Henry (elegantly played by Damien Lewis, the infamous Brody in Homeland). Unlike the Tudors, Wolf Hall isn’t flashy or sexy, although sex figures into everything that goes on at Court. Henry, frustrated by not being able to conceive a male heir by his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, falls for the beautiful daughter of one of his courtiers, Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy). In the Tudors, Ann was portrayed as strident and conniving, in Wolf Hall she is cynically calculating. Her sole ambition is to become Queen of England and she will do anything to achieve her goal. And it is Thomas Cromwell whom she enlists to help persuade the Pope to grant Henry a divorce from Catherine. As it becomes increasingly clear that the Pope will not grant Henry a divorce, Cromwell takes on the Church itself. It is the time of the Reformation, and Protestant sects are beginning to form throughout Europe and challenge the power of the Catholic Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Church. This is an appealing thought to Henry, who is intent on solidifying his own power base among warring nobles and the exceedingly rich Catholic clergy. Wolf Hall is based on the novel of the same name by Hillary Mantel. In the series, like the book, Thomas Cromwell is portrayed as a working class lad who made good. The son of a blacksmith, he became a soldier and later trains as a lawyer. He eventually became advisor to the powerful Cardinal Wolsey who was himself an advisor to Henry the Eighth. But in 16th century England too much power is dangerous, and Wolsey falls out of favor and is replaced by his protégé Thomas Cromwell. Although the nobles in Henry’s court despised the low-born Cromwell, his humble roots are precisely the reason that Henry trusted him over the nobility, many of whom were rivals for his throne. As many of Henry’s advisors learned, power is tenuous. Thomas Cromwell demonstrates how to outthink his rivals, and solidify his power in an age of uncertainty. 12

BFEC Crowned Primary Schools Softball Champions Virgin Gorda’s Bregado Flax Educational Center rode the arm of pitcher Tyriece Carrasco to five straight victories – including back to back shutouts – and won Saturday’s BVI Primary Schools Softball Round Robin Tournament organized by Terry “Chino” Chinnery of the Dept. of Youth Affairs and Sports. They finished with a 5-0 record in the tournament held at the Old Recreation Grounds. Carrasco got the support from Kyreek Gardner who went 3-for-3 in the opening game in leading Bregado Flax past Willard Wheatley, 18-2. D'Andre Baijanuth took the loss. Carrasco then pitched Bregado Flax to an 11-0 shut out of Ivan Dawson. Next for Carassco came a 2-0 shutout of Francis Lettsome, before a 3-2 victory over Althea Scatliffe. Carracso also enjoyed a 3-2 victory over Jost Van Dyke, as they completed the tournament unbeaten. Althea Scatliffe finished second with a 3-2 record. Stephen Emmanuel went 2-for-2 to back the pitching of Javin Wattley during a 6-1 triumph over Willard Wheatley. Wattley was again on the mound as Althea Scatliffe shut down Ivan Dawson, 1-0. They also shut out Jost Van Dyke, 3-0 behind Wattley, before falling to Francis Lettsome, 2-1, for Wattley’s second loss. Jost Van Dyke placed third after Tristan Palmer homered in his only at bat, helping them to a 1-0 triumph over Francis Lettsome. Beyonce Callwood collected the victory. Callwood was again the winning pitcher when Jost Van Dyke turned back Willard Wheatley, 3-2. Callwood got her third victory after they beat Ivan Dawson, 4-2. “The tournament went pretty well but several teams that were expected to show up, didn’t call or Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

say anything,” event coordinator Terrence Chinnery noted. “We were expecting 11 schools but only about six showed up. I’d appreciate in the future that if schools can’t come, they call or say something because we had to redo the schedule we had set up.” Chinnery said all in all, the kids had a good time and that’s the most important thing and they really, really enjoyed themselves. “Teams want to know when we’ll have it again and I told them we’ll have an actual school league next year,” Chinnery said. “But Bregado Flax and Jost Van Dyke did exceptionally well. Based on what I saw, there’s a lot of talent that we can pull from and some of their girls are pretty good too.” Chinnery thanked the parents that helped out and the teachers who gave up their Saturday for 9 hours to be with their teams and also to Sharlene Hill for her assistance and the Dept. of Youth Affairs & Sports. “Overall, it was a successful tournament,” Chinnery said. “Bregado Flax did well and their players are good athletes, so they played really well.” 14
