Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Something like love…

Ask Koren

“I can’t live without you; I will never love anyone else; you complete me; if you leave me I will die.” These are some of the statements that might be popular in love songs and movies and seem to bring with them a load of passion, but really….for one’s life to be dependent on his or her partner is not the truest definition of love, it is a more unhealthy co-dependent type of relationship that can be damaging to both parties. Love is a wonderful thing….it can bring great happiness and can brighten our days and sweeten our nights. It helps us to grow and creates in us a desire to want to be better persons and we can never run out of love, no matter how much we give. However as wonderful as romantic love is, no human being needs another human being to survive. We cannot provide air or the breath of life and it is dangerous to rely on another human being so much. Love is not about dependency, it is a mutually giving relationship. This type of emotion suffocates a person, puts them on lock-down and if they want to end the relationship, they are fearful because you threaten to kill yourself if they do. This type of relationship leads to possessiveness, unreasonable jealousy, fear and an overdependence on the person who now feels responsible for your wellbeing. It is dysfunctional.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

If you have found yourself in this type of situation, correct it now. Deal with whatever issues has caused you to become this way. You could have abandonment issues, maybe you were the product of an alcoholic parent or unstable family or maybe you just have low self esteem and feel like you are an incomplete person and can’t function without someone else. Here’s the newsflash! You are a complete person who can be okay just by yourself; having another person in your life is the wonderful icing to the cake, but you are a whole, sweet delicious cake and you will live if that person leaves you. To think otherwise is denying how special and worthwhile you really are. Discover the special wonderful version of you and in so doing, your love relationships will be so much richer when you don’t expect more than another person can give.

BVI Connection - The Digital Way As someone who uses her Facebook page as a launch off to everything “social” – in the sense of digital connectedness – I have been amazed recently how community bulletin boards in the BVI have not only offered lively discussion forums on a range of topics, but also helped folks in many ways. Recently two missing dogs through posts and pictures were found healthy and returned to their happy owners and some mistreated canines were rescued and cared for until they find new homes – all because there is an internet bulletin board out there that many check into frequently. Of course a community bulletin board hosts a wide range of announcements for upcoming events, a plethora of services offered and of course those random “who do you suggest as the best” dentist, upholsterer, cabinetmaker, mechanic, gardener-questions that are often quickly answered with many suggestions. People will share important information like the BVI DDM’s post on the “preparedness campaign” for the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season and the BVI Electricity Corporation regularly posts scheduled power outages in advance, although many of us wish there were not so many “unscheduled ones.” With elections coming up, we also see social media sites alive with photos, slogans and announcements of campaign rallies coming to a neighborhood near you! However, two recent posts had the community boards becoming heated chat sessions with long threads of comments and opinions. The first was an innocuous (it seemed at first) complaint by one Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

female shopper in a major supermarket here about a Mother’s Day Special comprising a somewhat insensitive arrangement of household cleaning items complete with clear cello wrap and a bow – just what every mother dreams of getting on her special day. Well, the photo and post went “viral” with everyone weighing in on this seemingly callous display. The manager, aware of the social media buzz, responded immediately by taking the display down with an explanation that it was a discount special arranged by the product brand’s marketing group, not the local store. The other was a community post about the dangers of a new game some youth in the territory are playing with some very negative effects. The game apparently like the popular Ouiji board of the 60s sums up “spirits” to manipulate or answer questions through moving objects in certain ways. It seemed to illicit immediate responses from some who denounced the whole thing as “mass hysteria.” However, parents of children who played the game and couldn’t sleep at night and local church leaders, who weighed in on the dangers of games that conjure up demonic forces, had many concerned that this was more than simple hypnotic mind control. The digital age was not launched with a “Miss Manners” book, so we must navigate this one with respect for the positions others take on subjects. When it comes to issues where there appears to be a sharp divide, internet community boards serve best when allowing all views to be aired, hopefully with language that indicates a respect for differences. 10

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Tales from Tour de Tortola What happened in the Tour de Tortola, a 37 mile circumnavigation of Tortola that started and ended in Trellis Bay, Beef Island on Sunday? Orano Andrews won in 2 hours 40 minutes after taking control in Brandwine Bay. “I saw that I had a window of opportunity after my opponent (Barry Jones) was struggling and after that, I decided to take the lead until the end,” explained Andrews who won for the fifth time. “I climbed my beast after I left town including up Windy Hill and I felt good and comfortable.” Jones was satisfied with his second place finish. “Not being familiar with certain sections of the course, I had several detours plus, I had several spills – going uphill funny enough,” he noted. “But, it was a good day’s ride. Enjoyed it immensely. The intention was to go hard at the start because I knew a lot of people won’t be interested in going really hard before the serious climbing began and being a road racer, we hit it from the start.” The transition from a road bike racing to racing on a mountain bike became obvious to Jones early in the race. He said before reaching Brandywine Bay hill, he felt that he was pulling from his gluteus. “That concerned me because normally, I’m not feeling that kind of sensation in my butt when I’m actually pedalling so I had to adjust myself,” he pointed out. “Besides, the bike I was on, was a loner bike and the gears weren’t shifting that well. When Orano left, I basically had to go at my own pace and select the gears I could at that that point in time.” Former winner Carolina Pettigrew – the only woman entered – was fourth overall and rides a lot with Dave, her husband, who likes endurance events. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Barry Jones leading Orano Andrews

“Usually, he’s stronger than me but, he tend to get cramps in long, long races,” she explained. “I thought he was going to beat me, but he ended up cramping on Windy Hill. Poor man. I left him on the side of the road – I had to make it home. The thing is, when you’re going up those steep hills all you think is one foot in front of the other.” Race coordinator Ian Walker described the tour as ‘a punishing race.’ ”That was really, really an extremely tough race,” he said. “We were lucky to have some good conditions, but when you’re talking almost 40 miles – up and down those hills with over two and a half thousand feet of climbs and you put that all into the pot – absolute pain all the way through.” While the Beef Island start eliminates the East End traffic, Pettigrew said riders whip it up on the flat to make up time. “Those guys really push it down to West End and I’m like how in the world I’m going to climb hills after that?” she reasoned. Andrews agreed. “You might be a little bit exhausted but once you have the fitness to climb, then that’s easy once you’re a climber,” he said. 12

Weekly Suduko

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
