Horse & Pony Show Saturday, June 20th

This Week’s Feature Story by Arlena Smith
Horse & Pony Show Countryside Adventures now provides an opportunity here in the BVI for both children and adults to learn from the beginning or to simply develop their skills in pony and horseback riding. Located on Tortola at the top of Joes Hill in the rural setting of Diamond Estate Farm and County Centre lies the home of the BVI’s veryfirst equestrian centre. This hidden gem provides children’s pony lessons straight through to full fledge trail rides for experienced adults. The centre is open year round for appointments and welcomes families who would like to take part. The centre is also open to the public to simply come and view the farm and explore “Pets Corner” where they can view small animals as well as herds of ponies, donkeys and horses. The Horse and Pony Show is a first for the BVI and the Countryside Adventures and is set to take place on Saturday June 20th. Organizers hope to provide not just residents with the chance to enjoy the scenery from the saddle, but also to add a new activity for the Territory’s visitors. After school programs are already in progress, as well as weekday mornings and weekend riding activities for all. The county themed fun filled afternoon has some-
thing for the whole family young and old. There will be riding competitions, gymkhana races, ‘best turned out’ classes and the inaugural “Diamond Show Jump and Obstacle Challenge.” In between the scheduled events, there will be demonstrations and fun activities throughout the whole afternoon. Outside of the equine activities, Devonshire Cream Teas will be served, there will be a beer tent, tortoise racing, pony rides, plus the entertainment and commentary will be provided by Al Broderick. So make a day of it and bring the whole family for a day of fun and horsing around. Get it! For more details visit www.countrysideadventuresbvi.com or call 542-2070.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
Meet the Captain & Chairman of the Boards She honed her craft playing among the boys in the Bay. Along with her twin Tafara, she went on to Central Arizona College, then the University of Albany Great Danes, where she started 29 of 33 games during the 2013-14 season, dished out 159 assists, pulled 84 rebounds and averaged 11.7 points per game. She led the Danes’ rebounding in 16/29 games with a best of 19 against UMass Lowell. She was the team’s leading scorer twice – with a best of 19 and 13 boards against Hartford. Last week, Cane Garden Bay resident Tamara “Tammy” Phillip displayed her skills in front of the home crowd during the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Women’s Championships – marking the first time that the BVI has fielded a team. She became Chairman of the Boards during a gut wrenching 71-67 loss to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday, hauling in 29 off the glass to go with her 27 points, 9 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks – all game highs. There had never been a women’s team in competition before they opened with a 64-61 victory over Guyana. “I think this should have been done long time ago, but since they have been concentrating on the men, we now have our opportunity to do what we have to do,” she said before the tournament. “This is our first time in and we are trying to improve on everything so that the ladies can come out and shine.” And, she shined. She opened the tournament with 28 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals and five assists. As Captain, throughout the tournament, she led by example. She directed. She hustled. She ran the offense - whatever needed t be done she did—and Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
BVI Captain Tamara "Tammy" Phillip dominated the boards
the younger ones followed her lead. But, she knows the team is young and she needs help. “Everything is me, me, me, me, so I’m looking for another person that looks like me, so I can get off the ball a bit and be aggressive,” she remarked following the St. Vincent loss. “But, I give thanks to my teammates – they’ve learnt a lot.” Following the last game, Tammy said the players learnt a lot. “The only thing we have to catch up on is another point guard to get the pressure off me,” she said. “As you see, 40 minutes was a lot. They expected a lot out of me. Although my sister was on the bench, that’s where I came in – rebounding, crashing boards and feeding my players.” Coach Brian “Bash” Brewley praised his captain. “She was wonderful,” he noted. “She made it easier for all the rookies – she and her sister – they were beautiful. Tammy controlled the ball and Taffy controlled the boards. Tammy led the tournament in block shots. The two of them did a pretty good job.” 6

Daredevil The story of Daredevil is fairly straightforward at first glance. Daredevil is the story of a blind lawyer, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), who also fights crime in Hell’s Kitchen as a masked vigilante known so far as “The Man in Black.” As a child, Matt saves a man from getting hit by a truck, but in the process, gets blinded by a batch of chemicals that spill on his eyes. Unknown to everyone else, the chemicals also managed to heighten the rest of his senses. Shortly after losing his sight Matt suffers more tragedy when his boxer father Jack Murdock (John Patrick Hayden) who has never won a fight and struggles to make ends meet is killed for not throwing a big fight. Knowing that death could have been his fate for this betrayal, Jack makes sure to leave Matt a huge inheritance so that he may have a better life. Despite the hand Matt is dealt he goes on to bigger and better things – specifically, law school, where he meets his best friend the awkwardly charming Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). Armed with the knowledge of the law and a passion to clean up the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt and Foggy decide to open their own law practice despite having a promising future at an elite law firm. Daredevil never makes assumptions about what its audience may know, but it’s also in no hurry to reveal itself. Unlike, the 2003’s Daredevil film starring Ben Afleck, the series allows time for the exploration of characters and compelling subplots like Matt’s relationship with his boxer father and its impact on him. It also deepens Matt’s character from the onset, Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
creating layers to his persona. The most striking thing about the series is the way in which the writers choose to tell the story. It paints every scene with a moody atmosphere that almost makes the view feel, to a certain extent, what it is to see things through Matt’s eyes. As the series wears on, it loses some of its early simplicity, but it also becomes clear that Daredevil is not just about one thing. Every episode reveals a different side of the story. One episode may focus primarily on the law, while another will mostly be about “The Man in Black” owning the night. And with gangsters, Russian villains, and the Kingpin Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) there is no doubt that this is superhero stuff. Netflix and Marvel have done an awesome job with this series. There’s a lot to take in when it comes to Daredevil’s world and with Season 2 slated for a 2016 release I can’t wait so see what they come up with next. 14

Who is it? It’s not everyday that someone from the past drops into your life from out of the blue, but that’s exactly what happened to me recently. It started with a phone call from former colleague Paul Backshall. “I have someone I want you to meet,” Paul said. “Who is it?” I asked, my curiosity piqued. “You’ll see when we get there,” came the unhelpful response. There seemed no point in guessing, so I got back to work and waited. Paul soon arrived accompanied by two men. One was Jeff, who Paul introduced as an old friend – the other was the mystery man. “Do you know who I am?” he asked. I looked at him and decided that I did know, but how embarrassing if I was wrong, so I smiled quizzically and waited. “Englewood,” he hinted, and then added, “Dwight Morrow.” I knew for sure then, and said, “Andy? Andy Kaslow?” Dwight Morrow was the high school that both Andy and I had attended in our hometown of Englewood in New Jersey. Andy, it seems, was no stranger to the BVI having sailed here with his wife for a number of years. This time though, his brother-in-law Jeff was along, and Jeff had taken him to meet Paul. “I showed them the latest Welcome,” explained Paul, “and when Andy saw your name, he told me
that he went to school with a Claudia Colli.” It was one of those small world coincidences, which in today’s interconnected world happens with uncanny frequency. Andy and I chatted briefly, reminiscing about people we knew in common, and what we had been doing in the intervening decades. As they were getting ready to leave, Andy suggested that I attend our next high school reunion in three years time. I had been delighted to see Andy again, but did I want to meet dozens of people from my past – all at the same time, and all in the same room? It was a daunting thought. That evening, I dug out the Engle Log, my high school yearbook and flicked through the pages remembering people and events from my school years. There I was (Feature Editor, Oracle newspaper) and there was Andy (President, Tower Club). He had black hair, not gray, but wasn’t all that changed considering the number of years that have passed. And what about the rest of my graduation class – what did they look like, and what were they doing today? I guess if I really want to know, I will have to attend the reunion. Fortunately I have until 2018 to decide. 17

You Asked...We Answered Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder. Q: Can you tell me what the status of “King & Maxwell” is? Has it been canceled, or will it be back?
Q: I’m enjoying watching Halle Berry in “Extant.” Has she done television before? A: In fact, that’s where her acting career began. The former model was among the regulars on a shortlived 1989 ABC spinoff of Who’s the Boss? called Living Dolls, about a modeling agency. Her role in that — as she amusingly described it to us when her current CBS series began — basically consisted of her entering a scene by saying, “Hi, everybody!” then ending it by saying, “Come on, let’s go!” Guest shots on A Different World and Amen followed, then a longer stay on Knots Landing . Berry then shifted her main attention to feature films, but TV movies also stayed in the mix for her with such efforts as the Oprah Winfreyproduced The Wedding and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Berry’s top home-screen effort up to now arguably was a 1999 HBO biography that she also produced, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, for which she won a number of acting awards including an Emmy. That film was co-written by Shonda Rhimes, now a major television force as the maker of
A: It was one-and-done for the mystery series, which TNT canceled after its maiden run of episodes. Its stars have already moved onto other projects; Jon Tenney joined ABC’s Scandal last season, and Rebecca Romijn is staying with TNT by appearing in an upcoming series inspired by the cable network’s Librarian TV movies. Romijn also is the host of the Game Show Network series
Skin Wars . Q: Are there any more new episodes of the show “History Detectives” planned? A: The PBS program just finished a July run under a revised format that made it History
Detectives Special Investigations, using modern techniques to explore such true mysteries as the disappearances of bandleader Glenn Miller and Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa. At this writing, the future of the series had not been determined.

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
