Is It Time To Leave The Job

Ask Koren

Dear Koren, I have been at my current job for 6 years now and I am feeling stuck. The pay is good but the work is very boring and routine – same thing day in and day out. I’ve discussed with my partner about looking for something else more meaningful but he thinks that the job market is too unstable right now. I think he is more concerned about the money than my feelings. How do I know when it’s a good time to start over and could it be that I am the problem and it’s not the job? –Wondering

routine and making your job more interesting; that depends on the scope of the workplace to be able to meet your needs. You could look for a different job with more growth potential but as your partner says, the job market is a bit tight right now. If you choose this route, it would be better for you to not leave your current position, until you find something else. Sometimes we need to get more creative and find ways to spice up what we do on a day to day basis to make it more interesting. The reason I say that is because you could go to another job and depending on the type of work you do, you could end up in the same dilemma. So therefore, instead of changing your work, you could just change the way you work. Look for more efficient ways of doing your work, sharpen your customer services skills, mentor a younger or less experienced employee, create new forms or a database; in other words, make the job more interesting. Also, be sure that you have a range of non-work things that you are interested in – work should not be the only interesting part of your life.

Dear Wondering, It could be a combination of you and also the job and nothing is wrong with your feelings. Remember as individuals, we grow and change constantly, so what would have been a perfect fit for you six years ago could now leave you feeling like a square peg in a round hole. Also, money is not the only thing that brings job satisfaction – a person needs to feel challenged, feel like they are making a positive difference, be admired by their colleagues, appreciated by their employers and so on. When all these things stop happening and you dread going to work, then you know it’s time to do something differently. You can speak with your supervisor to see if you can change your duties, add new tasks and drop some old ones or explore other ways of breaking the

And the Drought Continues... It has been four days now and counting since the last drop of water came through my tap at home – street water that is. Every morning and evening since last Saturday I’ve been turning on the tap, expecting to hear the usual spluttering cough that means water has returned, only to be greeted with empty silence. Although water is still available from the cistern, the lack of any significant rainfall over the past few months means that its level has reached the point where the color of the water is becoming brown. I’m sure this is a story that most people on the island can

Cyclist Cries Out For Support He wasn’t considered by the BVI Olympic Committee for the 2010 Commonwealth Games was passed over for last year’s edition and will not be in the Pan Am Games in Canada, that opened on Friday. Although he wonders why, Darel Christopher Jr. is using the seemingly negatives as positives. “I’ve just been training and trying to make it as a pro cyclist, seeing that I’m the only pro cyclist for the BVI, I’m doing my part,” said Christopher who’s now based in North Georgia and rides with Prima Tappa Cycling. “I’m at the pro level, but don’t have a pro contract. I’m racing with the pros, but don’t have a pro team as yet. But, that’s the aim.” He has worked his way up from being a Category 5 to Category 2 cyclist in the USA. “It’s just like the pros – pro one and pro two – just that you don’t have a contract, that’s it,” he said. “You’re racing with the pros. You’re either on a low team or racing by yourself.” His last major race was in Wisconsin, where he opened in 19th place and had a best finish in second – riding alone with no teammates. His life is eating, sleeping and training. “It’s tough, knowing I don’t have the support of the BVI Olympic Committee or any organization, it’s just me on my own trying to sacrifice everything just to try and make it at the pro level – it’s tough,” he explained. “You have to look at nutrition, massages and everything else. It’s a long process but I’m willing to do it. I’m going to take my time and God’s going to help me. I’m competing against guys who have the support of their country. Not having the BVI Olympic Committee supporting me, it’s very tough knowing that I’m out here on my own – the only professional cyclist for the BVI – and

everyone pretty much turned their back on me. Am I a BVIsander? What is it?” The 24 year old said if he had the required support along the way, he would have been on a pro team touring. “Everyone I’ve worked with coach wise said that I do have it, but it’s a long process and if I had the support back then, I’d be a lot further than where I’m at right now, but, that’s a sacrifice in life,” he noted. “You just have to keep fighting even though your own people are pulling you down like crabs in a bucket – it’s kind of sad and people talk about you – but I just turn all the negative energy into something positive and the downfall into something great. I know one day I’ll make it – I will. I’m determined to do what I have to do. I’m focused and I’m not going to let anyone deter me from anything.” He has trained in Spain, doing 3-4 hours all climbing. He has been averaging 450 mile per week riding in the last two months, putting in 7 hours of riding. “You pretty much eat, sleep, watch TV on your bike,” he said. 13

Poldark Poldark, now airing on PBS, is a sweeping historical drama that has a heart throb of a leading man, two beautiful women whom he loves, insidious villains out to undermine his success – all set against the stark and windswept background of the Cornish coast. Ross Poldark (Aiden Turner) has retuned home after two years fighting for the British in the American Revolution. Battle scarred and weary, he comes back to Cornwall to learn that his father has died and the family copper mine is bankrupt. But perhaps the most damaging, his beloved fiancé Elizabeth (Heida Reed), who had believed him dead, was now engaged to his cousin Francis. Devastated, he throws himself into repairing the family home, forging new relationships and attempting to forget Elizabeth. The decline of the mining industry in Cornwall has left the villagers destitute. Much of the work has moved to Wales, but Ross feels that there may be still some life in his old mine and looks for financial backers to bank roll the hiring of new workers and reopening the mine. A critique of the British class system, Poldark contrasts the lives of the haves and the have-nots. The out of work miners are hungry and destitute, but the gentry, as demonstrated in one instance by a cruel judge, is oblivious to the suffering. When a sickly young man, desperate to provide for his family, is caught poaching, Ross goes to the trial to plead with the judge for the young man’s release – but to no avail. The judge is determined to make an example of him. In every aspect, Ross Poldark is an 18th century rebel, seemingly indifferent to scandal and gossip. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Early on, he takes in Demelza (Eleanor Thomlinson), an unkempt young woman who has been beaten by her father, and gives her a job as a kitchen maid – creating fuel for the village gossips. In another highly charged scene he asks Elizabeth to dance at a ball enraging Francis. Envy and incompetence has taken its toll on Francis and rather than turning his own family mine around, he turns to drink, gambling and the village prostitute. An eight episode series, based on the first two of 12 Poldark novels by Winston Graham, there is a lot to watch in this sumptuous and sometimes over the top epic. Poldark’s efforts to reopen the mine, are hindered by a greedy money lender, and work at the mine does not initially go well. And then there are the questions: where is Poldark’s relationship with Demelza leading, what about Elizabeth, will his cousin Verity be reunited with her true love – and will the mine succeed? Already aired episodes of Poldark are available on iTunes. You can also get a season pass and episodes will download as they become available. 14
