Sea & Salsa at Bitter End Yacht Club This weekend is the Sea and Salsa event at Bitter End Yacht Club, which will be held from July 22 to 26 in Virgin Gorda. Famous chef Roberto Trevino and his partner, chef Jose Alfredo Diaz will be taking over the hotel’s restaurant to serve a special menu that features unique Puerto Rican creole flavor. Chef Trevino is an American chef known for his appearances on Iron Chef: America and The Next Iron Chef. Currently, he is chef and owner of three restaurants and bars in the Condado area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chef Treviño moved to Puerto Rico in the early 90's to work as a chef for the start of the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. In 1996 he left El Conquistador to open The Parrot Club, a nuevo Latino restaurant in Old San Juan, where he served as executive chef. Following the success of The Parrot Club, Treviño opened two more restaurants in Old San Juan named Dragonfly, specializing in latinasian cuisine, and Aguaviva a seafood restaurant.
Treviño has cooked dinner at the James Beard Foundation house in New York for their award events and is frequently featured as a guest chef in food events throughout the US and the Caribbean, including the Aspen Food & Wine Classic, Telluride Culinary Festival and the St Croix Food and Wine Festival. This will be Chef Trevino’s third time participating in the Sea and Salsa event, which has become sort of a tradition for the chef and his diners. Chef Trevino will be preparing a special menu in the clubhouse dining room, a selection of Tapas in the bar area as well as three special entrees daily. Every evening there will be a happy hour Pub Crawl and music by Puerto Rican DJ Gulembo. Make the trip over to Bitter End and enjoy a few night of great food with friends and family. For more information on this event you can contact the BVI Tourist Board Office in Puerto Rico at (787) 721-2525 or visit www.beyc.com.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
No Control Over My Child’s Upbringing
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, I don’t like the way my daughter’s mother is raising her. The child is eight and she goes to a private school, which I insisted on. I just found out she is planning to have the child take part in the carnival and did not ask me. The child does not have my last name because at the time of birth I was not sure she was mine but now I am sure and I have been maintaining her. She have her out with her every weekend and not raising her in a decent way. I’m married and cannot really take the child but what is the best option? –Concerned Father
Try to work with the mother as a team and stop looking down on her. If you try to force your principles on her, she might ignore you. Instead, thank her for taking care of your daughter and reading to her at night, tending to all the bruises and bumps when she falls, putting her into her bed when she has nightmares, answering the 101 questions daily that 8 year olds ask, preparing her meals, making her bed, etc. You give money which is wonderful but she gives time and herself. A mediation session might be helpful to discuss the best interest of the child. This way, you both get to share your views and come to some agreement with an objective third party guiding the discussion. Mom is likely to listen if you give her the respect she deserves. If your wife will not allow the child to visit, then make quality time to spend with your child and in spending time, you will be able to positively influence your child so she will be sure to say, “my daddy does not like that.” Trust me on that one….little girls want to have hero dads. Children should not have to suffer because of warring parents, they should feel loved and secure even if their parents are separated. The situation is fixable with cooperation on both sides.
Dear Father, Your concern for your child is heartwarming because many fathers do not take much interest in “outside” children. Now that you are convinced that the child is yours, perhaps you should take steps to have your name added to the birth certificate which will give you more rights as a co-parent. I’m sure you had an idea of who she was when you were getting involved with her, so why now expect her to be different? Maybe she is being the best mother she knows how….for example, you mentioned that she takes your daughter out with her every weekend; many parents leave their children with people who take advantage of them, so it is a positive thing that she keeps her close. Also, while many of us because of religious or other beliefs might not engage in emancipation festivals, that does not mean that it cannot be a rich, cultural experience for others.

A Cane Garden Bay Icon The Cane Garden Bay Callwood clan has always lived on the western end of the bay, on the grounds of the rum distillery that has been in their family for over 200 years. Another Callwood family fixture is Callwood’s Wedding, the bar that Callwood patriarch, Papa Pouie started on the beach across the road from the Distillery in 1982. I personally never got to meet this CGB icon, though just by chance, I happened upon his memorial service, held at Stanley's (now Tony's) as I was walking my dog down the beach. It was a huge party, complete with ten tons of delicious West Indian food (this I know first hand, as I was invited up, for just being in the vicinity). To say it was well-attended would be another gross understatement – there was no parking anywhere along Cane Garden Bay Road, and the guests were spilling out to all parts of the beach. And, to top it off, dancing and good vibes were provided by the also iconic Lashing Dogs. A little history here – the Wedding was “mash up bad” from hurricane Marilyn in 1995. The foundation and flooring were severely damaged, and the roof was ripped off as well. Back in the day, the restaurant’s Wednesday night fish fry was very popular among CGB locals. And the Lashing Dogs regularly played there. Papa Pouie is credited as being the originator and innovator of it all. To say he was a handy guy, would be yet again, an understatement. Along with family, he built the entire structure, right down to the restaurant's innovative décor: lights carved from calabash, and a transom of the old Cyndy Tide, a boat Pouie had built, which had been destroyed in a storm.
Pouie was also an avid fisherman – this after family was his deepest passion. He not only made his own pots, and built and took out his own fishing boats, if he wasn’t fishing in one of these two manners, he fished off the deck of his restaurant. His granddaughter Shaunie, says he claimed to have “never worked a day in his life.” I guess that would mean for someone else, since taking care of his family was his reason for living. He was chief cook and bottle washer of the establishment, as well as bartender. He could never say “no” to anyone and was willing to feed the masses, even when times were tough and friends and neighbors couldn’t afford a night out. Ellis and Shaunie (the Callwood father/daughter team now running the place) are well on their way to making the Wedding happen, all over again. Expect regular live music, or DJ Ellis himself will be spinning great dance tunes. In its proximity to the sea, Callwood’s Wedding takes weather hits fairly regularly, but this tight-knit family clan always steps up to rebuild whatever is necessary. And there is still fishing off the deck whenever the weather and waves permit. 11

Harrigan Scott’s Rare Feat On July 11, sprinter Tahesia Harrigan-Scott completed a very rare feat not even many of her contemporary’s on the global track and field stage have matched in their athletic careers. Every athlete has a goal of competing in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships. Some never get the chance, others once even twice. For Hariggan-Scott who holds the 100/200m national records, it’s totally different. She’s coming off winning the US Track and Field Club Championships in New York on July 11. More so, her winning 100m time of 11.14 seconds with a legal wind limit of 2.0 meters per second, qualified her for a fifth successive IAAF World Championships. Only two BVI athletes have made the standards in that span. This year however, was the latest in her career, that she has met the mark dating back to 2005. “I’m very relieved that I’ve qualified for “worlds,” she said. “It was tough. But now, it’s one less stress to think about and to go out and qualify with the time I did, I’m very relieved. But, to be really honest, I was feeling okay at the beginning of this season, then I had some downfalls with injuries or slight issues with recurring injuries, so that kind of set me back a little bit,” reflected the BVI sprinter, drawn from a stock of less than 30,000 inhabitants. She said the road was a little tougher, because in practices she felt like she ran okay, but when she went to a meet, she ran terrible times. “That was playing on my mind a little bit,” she noted. “I knew it was always there and it was just making some corrections. Once they fell into place, I knew there’d be a big drip in my time. It was being patient and trusting in the process.”
Tahesia Harrigan-Scott
With a season’s best of 11.40 before the 11.14 which is .01 off her best and she hadn’t been close to since 2011, Harrigan-Scott said it’s a confidence boost heading into “Pan Ams” where she ran 11.19 on Tuesday and feels that her body is finally in sync with her mind and everything seems easier. If she’s not doing something right, her body tells her she said. “It is a confidence booster and I’ll try to come out and win a medal,” she said. “That’s the goal and to continue to drop my times and execute the race that I know I’m capable of doing.” Since injuring her quads two years ago, HarriganScott said she has developed some bad habits she and her husband-coach have been trying to correct, including kicking back, which is less than what it was before. She said she taught her body how to run without the pain but in the process it caused poor race execution and resulted in slower times. “Everything seem to be coming into place at the right time,” she said. “Yes, it would have been good to qualify for “worlds” earlier in the season, but it’s falling into place at the right time and it’s a blessing in disguise.” 13

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
