It’s October – Wear Pink!

It’s October, which means it is Breast Cancer Awareness month so go pink and show your support to raise awareness because, as the BVI Cancer Society has as its slogan this month, “Together We Fight – Together We Win.” There is a huge calendar of events this year that include free clinical breast exams running throughout the Territory. For details on when and where, see the ad on the inside back cover. So get along and get yourself checked out, it is a painless exam that takes just a few minutes – but essential for the early detection of this killer disease.

Other events taking place this month include Zumba fitness at the Festival Grounds at 5:15pm on September 29th, October 6th, 13th and 27th.

On October 17th at 5:30pm will be the UMI Pink Fashion Show to be followed by an after party at Bamboushay with DJ Bertrum. Have an early night though as the next day, October 18th sees the Walk/Run for a Cure from Noel Lloyd Park to the New Life Baptist Church and back. BVI Cancer Society President, Gloria Fahie said, “We urge everyone to

register for the Walk/Run for a Cure event at our offices on Main Street before the event as there will be no registration on the day. We will though have lots of goody bags and tee-shirts which will be given to participants.”

In Virgin Gorda on Saturday, 17th October, don’t miss the Pink Social Hour and Fashion Show at 5:30pm at Club Ecstasy with DJ Wiz. Also at Club Ecstasy, the popular night, Grown & Sexy Saturdays, is having a pink party on October 18th at 10pm with music by DJ Bertrum and the Mighty Dragon from St Croix.

Then on October 19th – Get Pink’d again at Club Ecstasy with VIBE, Poizon Band and Ah Milli Sounds from 10pm.

To conclude the month’s celebrations there will be a Paint the Town Pink day on October 31st where everyone is urged to wear pink, a pink tie, pink shoes, pink hair – anything goes, as long as it is pink! Then keep in pink and join in the Sunset Run/Walk of Hope from HLSCC to Brandywine Bay at 6pm.

Dear Koren, My husband is really frustrating me right now and if it wasn’t for this young baby, I wouldn’t want him near me. I gave birth earlier in the year and he was in the labour room with me and everything went well.

Four months after the baby and I noticed that he hasn’t initiated any intimacy only to find out that he is turned off by what he saw in the labour room. How am I supposed to feel as a woman, when it’s his child I gave birth to and when I know every other woman go through that and their husband still want them.

Your husband is being insensitive because whatever he saw that stayed on his mind cannot compare with what you experienced as it was your body being stretched and painfully manipulated. A woman needs to feel beautiful and the attention from her partner adds so much more to what she feels herself; you want him to be the one who finds you attractive and to love you unconditionally in spite of what he saw. You can visit a gynaecologist together, who can explain to him that things go back to normal, so there is no reason for him to be afraid. You can also

Something else that people overlook, is that intimacy is largely also emotional. As frustrated as you are, do not allow yourself to get to the point where you blame yourself or the baby.

Your baby is a precious gift and the childbirth process is a natural one. Just acknowledge that your husband is an imperfect person with an overly dramatic imagination; don’t give up on him. Encourage him to speak with the physician and when he is relaxed you can both try to continue lovingly enjoying your marriage.

Special Needs Games On Tap With sporting activities in the dead zone this time of the year, there’s only one game in town this weekend and it’s for those with Special Needs.

The Lions Clubs in the Territory must be commended for taking this initiative, which is marking its 10th anniversary on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds.

“I’m very excited about the Lions’ 10th Anniversary Games for persons with special needs,” said Carvin Malone of the event the club has been behind since its inception. “This year, were are going to have athletes from the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Center, BVI Social Services and other areas of the community. Athletes will compete in the 50m Dash, Lime and Spoon race, Three Legged Race and other events. We are working with Social Development and the Physical Education teachers to provide a whole range of events. We’ll also have the Grasshoppers entertaining us as well.”

Activities are expected to start at 9;30 a.m. and run until 2:30 p.m. with a lunchtime break at noon.

Malone said the event has gone off very well over the years. “Just to see the joy on the athletes faces when they are competing and during the ceremony when they are receiving their medals has been great,” he noted. “This is one of the community service projects the Lions have embarked on and done this with pride throughout the 10 years. We would welcome more community support in terms of people coming out, seeing and cheering on the athletes as they perform well in the games.”

“This event could not have been done without the support of a number of kind corporate sponsors and individuals,” Malone noted giving thanks to all involved in the program. “We have this as a very exciting program that the Lions and Leon Clubs of Tortola and the Valley Sound Lions Club hosts each year and we’re pleased to be doing this once again.”
