This Week’s Feature Story by Jan Critchley
National Theatre Live Presents King Lear If you enjoy world-class stage productions, then don’t miss the latest filmed theatre presentation from The BVI Theatre Series, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, King Lear, which will be shown at 7pm on Saturday, 25th October at the HLSCC Auditorium. The BVI Theatre Series is now into its second season and most of the plays shown to date were filmed “live” at the National Theatre, London and then broadcast across the globe, bringing the best of theatrical entertainment to audiences everywhere. The exceptions are The Nutcracker, which was filmed at the famed Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg, Russia and the Surprise Performance, which will conclude the 20142015 series. The BVI Theatre Series was the brainchild of Nadia Menezes of Appleby who has chosen the line-up of productions to attract as many different audiences as possible. Nadia said recently, “I hope that people will be as excited about this new line-up as I am – and I do hope that those who missed it previously will be coming out to support the series this time around. The Director of King Lear is Academy Award win-
ner Sam Mendes who makes his return to the National Theatre to direct Simon Russell Beale in the title role of King Lear. One of Shakespeare’s best, the play depicts the aged king as he decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. So when his favorite daughter, Cordelia, remains silent – Lear’s world descends into chaos. All the performances are held at the HLSCC who have worked closely with Appleby and high praise has been given for their innovative set design and stage work. Other productions to put in your diary for this season include a dazzling production of Tchaikovsky’s, The Nutcracker on 29th November at 3pm and 7pm; Skylight, a Valentines special on Saturday 14th February starring Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy and don’t miss the penultimate show on 28th March, the family favorite – Treasure Island. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 on the door and $10 for Students/HLSCC staff and can be bought from The Watering Hole, House, Sunny Caribbee, Digicel and alookingglass.

My Friend Is Now My Boss
Ask Koren
Dear Koren, My co-worker got a promotion back in July and it has completely changed her. All the things we used to do as colleagues, now is suddenly not allowed. She has blocked facebook access at the office and want to introduce all kinds of new policies. We used to go movies Tuesday night, now she is too busy working late. Is it fair for her to use the insider information she had as an employee now that she is a supervisor? How do I not let this affect our friendship? –Disgruntled Friend and Employee
divorce themselves from the knowledge they have, so yes, she would know the little tricks you all did together as employees. I’m not hearing anything to suggest that you are proud of your friend or happy for her. Maybe you need to pull yourself together so that you too can be eligible for a promotion. Adhere to the new policies, do away with the tricks that you practice and give your friend and boss the respect she deserves. You never know when you will be in that position. If you think she is really overdoing it with the new rules too early or infringing on anyone’s rights, then discuss that respectfully as you would anyone else, but ensure that you are being fair and objective and not jealous or just feeling left behind. Unless she changes drastically, the friendship can survive. Do your best to be a team player. The workplace is not your personal playroom, it is a place of business and right now there are so many people looking for jobs that we cannot slip up. This is your opportunity to support a friend, be proud of her and maybe to make some changes in your work habits.
Dear Disgruntled, Many persons are promoted because of experience or because they are next in line, with no supervisory training which would help them to make the transition in a more gradual way. Also, sometimes it’s a very difficult thing to have to supervise friends because now she has to separate herself from being your buddy and partner in crime on the job to being the one who polices you. Don’t be too hard on her. In trying to prove herself and satisfy her superior, she has to demonstrate that she treats all employees the same regardless of who her friends are, that she is minimizing time-wasting by eliminating access to social media and that she is putting in enough hours to get the work done. As for her using insider information, a person cannot just

It’s 12 and out for ‘Two and a Half Men’ as last season starts No one can accuse Two and a Half Men of resting on its laurels as it heads toward its finish. The CBS sitcom staple makes a big, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” type change to its premise in its 12th and final season, which begins Thursday, Oct. 30. Suddenly worried about his mortality, Walden (Ashton Kutcher, who recently became a first-time father) wants to adopt a child ... and believing he stands a better chance of doing so as half of a couple, he asks housemate Alan (Jon Cryer) to pose as his gay partner. “It’s just a little bit out of left field,” admits the amiable Cryer, a two-time Emmy winner for the series, “but the writers have managed to create a story where it makes sense. I first thought, ‘Wow, that’s a dumb idea,’ but I mean it was a dumb idea for these two guys to have. I think we’ve established that they’re idiots in many respects — so the more I thought about it, the more I said, ‘Sure.”’ Noting the plot gives the show’s creative team “great fodder,” Cryer adds part of that is a major adjustment to frequent dater Alan’s social life. “It’s a tightrope walk,” the actor confirms. “He wants to honor the parental relationship he’s creating with Walden, but he still has the same wants he’s always had. We have an episode where Lyndsey
(Courtney Thorne-Smith) wants to come back into his life, and he has to make that decision.” Maggie Lawson Psych is joining “Two and a Half Men” for its home stretch in the recurring role of a social worker linked to the adoption scenario, and Cryer is happy to have her on board. “She’s got a lovely arc that’s been fun to play,” he says. Since everyone involved knows the end is near, Cryer — who also stars in the new movie Hit by Lightning — describes the atmosphere on the Two and a Half Men set as “jovial, tinted with a slight amount of bittersweet. Everybody has had so much fun, and it’s been such a crazy ride, we’re grateful for every moment. That’s really fun, but we’re going to miss it. It’s a mix of feelings.” Jon Cryer stars in the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men, which begins its 12th and final season today.
