BVI Food Fete 2015 - Taste of Tortola November is finally here, any guesses what that means? It’s the BVI’s Second Annual Food Fete – a month-long culinary event that celebrates the culinary offerings and experiences of the BVI. The 2015 BVI Food Fete offers a blend of new and signature events that have been curated for epicureans, tastemakers and novice culinary explorers. There are numerous festivities aimed at introducing guest and locals alike to the BVI’s culinary tourism product in a platform that blends together discovery and adventure. There are a slew of events planned for the month including the very popular Anegada Lobster Festival, which has synonymously become the signature event of these activities. The kick off event, Taste of Tortola takes place this Saturday, November 7th at the newly revitalized Queen Elizabeth II Park on Tortola from 6pm – 12am. This event will feature various cuisines served within the BVI by some top restaurateurs, chefs and mixologists. Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
I’m Tired of Fighting Ask Koren Dear Koren, My boyfriend and I fight about everything. We constantly argue and I am tired of it. I love him a lot and I know he loves me too but every little thing becomes an argument. He says I am moody and argumentative. Please give us some advice on how to get along better because our relationship is being affected and I don’t want to push him away. –Frustrated & Tired
work, you both have to take 100% responsibility for doing the following things: • Focus on the other person’s happiness and do away with selfishness • Remember that winning and being right is not the most important thing in a relationship • Make an effort no matter how angry you are to be respectful of each other • Take turns listening and speaking when disagreeing. When the other person is speaking, fight the urge to interrupt and just listen • Do and speak unto each other as you would have done unto you • Do something positive together every single day If that does not work, then you need to figure out if you really should be together. A relationship should enhance your happiness level, not add to the level of misery in your life. Life is really too short to be unhappy.
Dear Frustrated & Tired, I’m hoping by fight you just mean with words and that fists are not involved; that would be intolerable. Constant argument is a sign that something is not going well in the relationship and you need to figure out why; are you both fighting for control in the relationship, is there some lingering resentment that underlines every argument, do you really not like each other very much, are you really moody and argumentative as he says or is it something else? You have to assess if the arguments start at a particular time of day when someone is tired, if there is a particular topic that triggers the disagreement or if someone has unrealistic expectations of the other. Even if you are argumentative or moody, it takes two to argue so even if you start them, you cannot be held solely responsible for how things end. For things to

Before I Go to Sleep Before I Go to Sleep is a 2014 mystery thriller based on SJ Watson’s 2011 best-selling novel of the same name. The film stars Nicole Kidman as Christine Lucas who wakes up in a bed with a man she does not know, in an unfamiliar house. The man explains that he is her husband, Ben (Colin Firth), and that she suffered brain damage from a car accident ten years earlier. Christine wakes up every morning with no memory of her life from her early twenties onwards. Christine receives treatment from Dr. Nasch, a neurologist at a local hospital who gives her a camera to record her thoughts and progress each day. He calls her every morning to remind her to watch the video in the camera. Dr. Nasch instructs Christine to keep the camera hidden from Ben and reveals that her memory loss occurred after she was attacked and left for dead near an airport hotel. They surmise that Ben tells Christine it was a car accident to avoid upsetting her. Over the course of her treatment, Christine remembers a woman named Claire and Ben tells her that she was an acquaintance and they lost touch after the accident. Later, Christine also recalls that she had a son. She angrily confronts Ben over hiding their child, but he says their son died of meningitis when he was eight years old. Christine remembers the name Mike and believes it may be the name of her attacker, which she relates to Dr. Nasch. He hugs her to comfort her at which time she sees his name-tag and his first name is Mike. Scared, she runs from him but he catches her and says that he's sorry but he cannot treat her anymore, because he has feelings for her and her memories are
causing her to transfer what happened onto him. Christine finally obtains Claire's phone number and meets her and during their conversation, Claire reveals to Christine that after her attack, she and Ben became close, which resulted in a one-time sexual encounter. However, her friend was so consumed with guilt that she ended all contact. Christine decides to let Ben see the videos she has made on the digital camera, and he reacts angrily and strikes her before storming out. A while later, Claire calls Christine to tell her that she has spoken to Ben who claims to not have seen Christine for several years and that their son, Adam is alive and well. Shocked to the core, Claire asks Christine to describe the "Ben" she is living with, and with horror, they both realize he is not who he is claiming to be. To give away much more would be a spoiler, but it will keep you glued to the screen until the very end. So if you like a stylish thriller, look no further, you wont be disappointed. Available on iTunes or DVD now. 11

Two Yacht Clubs, One Small Island It is proven fact that we (the British Virgin Islands) are the sailing/cruising capitol of the planet. If that isn’t enough, we also have two highly-functioning yacht clubs on one tiny speck of any island. Well, that in itself puts us entirely on the map, if you are any type of sailor. Our Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club, is, I guess, the more “formal” of the two. The West End Yacht Club is a bit “looser,” shall we say, with a registration and membership fee that is so low, you can’t afford not to be a member. Both clubs run races – some serious, some not so much – almost all year round. As we are now back in full-on “season” the fun has just begun. The RBVI Yacht Club recently held “The Willy T. Virgin’s Cup” a couple weeks ago, a race requiring only ladies to be on the helm. The race had very little wind, yet very shifty breeze, challenging the harder-core racers who like consistent big air. But, a good sailor must know how to race his (her) boat in all conditions. In my (our) case, we chose not to ghost around and park out there like sitting ducks, but to go in search of the breeze. Taking the long-shot gamble we shot over towards St. John, and picked up whatever we could. The gamble paid off, as we were able to broad reach right back to the fleet (who were fairly spread out by that time) and take 1st place in our class (cruising). The prize-giving awards followed at the Willy T; the painkillers flowed, Ewan (master of ceremonies and proprietor) was in his glory, standing on a picnic table, making his announcements of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and the like.
This past weekend, the fun was on Jost Van Dyke, for Foxy’s Catfight. This race is mainly for catamarans, but now also features a one-legged cat class, the monohulls. Fourteen boats in total raced. Again, the conditions were less than optimal, with really light air. The course was from Great Harbour (Jost) to Sandy Cay, round to port first race, to starboard the second, shoot down to Great Thatch, and finish back at Great Harbour. Most boats finished, though a few dropped out and threw on the Iron Genny, to not have to deal with sitting in dead-calm conditions. And – of course – there was the awards/prizegiving and an after party at Foxy’s, which just ever so coincidentally, coincided with a Halloween party. The costumes this year were over the top, but a bit heavy on the pirate-theme as well as Gilligan’s island. Again, painkillers were flowing, the band (Tortola’s Final Faze) rocked the house, and the dancefloor was packed. Even if you’re not a sailor, both venues provided for a ton of fun. Coming up soon is Around Tortola, and I can’t even keep track of what’s beyond that. Again, how lucky are we, to have two clubs continuously churning out races, and the parties that go along with them? 13

Reflections On An NBA Training Camp Kleon Penn, the first BVI basketball player on a NBA team training camp roster, spent six weeks in the Minnesota Timberwolves camp before being waived ahead of the 2015-16 season opener. He walked away as a different player. “This has just been a dream and I’m happy that I’ve been here,” Penn said. “I really can’t complain about anything really and truly. Everything has just been amazing – even better than I thought – just theway they took care of you, the professionalism, everything.” While he saw limited action in three pre-season games against Toronto, Memphis and Chicago, the 6’11” big man said it was exciting being in the environment and at the practice facilities. “Even though I didn’t get to play a lot, just to see the real speed of an NBA game, it was really good for me,” he stated. “It showed me how basketball should be played. In practices, they emphasized running – running on defense, running on offense. It’s really slowed down in Puerto Rico. They walk the ball up, but in the NBA, it’s none of that. You’re running here and you’re running there. That type of speed would be beneficial for me as a big man running up and down the floor, so I can beat their big man, get easy baskets and early posts ups – that will help me score easier and help the team win more basketball games. That training camp whips people into shape. I’m definitely in shape now.” Penn said while things are similar to experiences he has had elsewhere in his career, it’s the finer details that stand out. As an example, he noted that one time when Kevin Garnett was in practice they were walking through plays, which highlighted the intensity he brings. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Kleon Penn...
“He doesn’t just walk through plays. If he’s playing defense, he’s in his stance – he’s always down,” Penn explained. “If he hedging, he’s not playing hedging just because he’s suppose to do it, he’s doing a real hedge. He’s also telling you to practice with that intensity – even if it’s just something light – practice with that intensity and it will be easier in the game. Little fine details like that got me thinking how it will help me be a better player, a better teammate, just better overall.” Following his waiver, Penn was speaking with Timberwolves general manager Milt Newton of St. Thomas, who has invited him to return for next year’s summer Developmental League. Penn said he couldn’t be judged much by practice and he didn’t get a lot of game time. “He just told me to keep working and he wants me to come back for the summer league so he can see me playing more minutes,” Penn said. “He told me I definitely got better during the training camp because I came here hurt with an ankle injury from the CBC Championships and they had to treat me the whole time, so I was basically way behind by time I got here. So, he encouraged me to keep working and he’ll see me in the summer league.” 14
