Win Big at Gaming Night This Saturday Gaming Night may have been rained out last Saturday, but enthusiasm for the event remains undampened. Rescheduled for this Saturday, November 14th Gaming Night, remains one of the highlights of the BVI social calendar. Held at Peg Leg Landing at Nanny Cay, Gaming Night is the event where gamblers and animal lovers converge for a night of fun at black jack, roulette, dice and the winner take all crab races. No one is a loser at this high rolling event organized by the Humane Society of the BVI. Chips can be exchanged for a variety of great prizes including dinners for two, gift certificates at local shops and day sails aboard popular BVI yachts. Up for grabs are bottles of wine and tasty treats for your pooch or kitty. And if you end up chipless at the end of the evening the animals become the clear winners, since proceeds from the night will go towards the new Animal Shelter to be constructed at Josiah’s Bay. Land has already been purchased and the plans for the

premises are moving ahead with the development application already submitted. First opened in 1975, the Shelter promotes animal welfare through its many programs, including de-worming, vaccinations, boarding and grooming. Spaying and neutering services are offered in conjunction with West End vet, Dr. Laura. The new facility will offer much more space for kennels and dog runs and allow the shelter to offer additional services including educational programs. Humane Society Board member Nancy Pascoe sums it all up: “Gaming night is the biggest fundraiser for the Humane Society and is a fun social event that is unique in the BVI. Please come and support us, have a great time and help us to raise lots of money for the new Animal Shelter!” Don’t miss this evening out at the casino where sophistication rules and everyone is a winner. Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Daughter Loves Too Much Boys Ask Koren Dear Koren,

her self-worth and that some decisions can either move her closer or farther from her long term goals. 3. Have her see a counsellor. If she raises issues that you are uncomfortable with or if she is refusing to open up to you (although it won’t happen overnight), then perhaps she can be referred to a counsellor who has experience with youth and the professional know-how to draw her out in conversation. There is also some objectivity and the counselor will not take her answers too personally or bring them up later as you might be tempted to do. 4. Involve her in extra-curricular activities. If she is playing a sport or participating in charity events or learning to play steel pan, it gives her something to occupy her free time and to place her focus on. Although young men are at these activities also, they are usually heavily supervised. It’s time to do everything in your power to put the brakes on your daughter’s behaviour before there are dire consequences. If you can get help from her father or someone else that she respects to show her some extra love and attention maybe she will realize how very special and very loved she is and would not need to seek that attention elsewhere.

I have a teenager daughter who is obsessed with guys. She is just 17 and she takes after her father. Every time you look around, she’s either sending a topless picture to somebody and I know she is sexually active. I beat her, tried punishment by taking away her phone and ban her from Facebook but it don’t make no difference. I had to give her back the phone to keep track of her. What do I do with this girl? –Concerned Mother Dear Concerned Mother, Its difficult for you as a mother to watch your daughter do this to herself. Sometimes young people get intimately involved with others not even understanding fully the consequences of their actions. Her behaviour can result in unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and ruin her reputation. Maybe she is seeking attention. If you tell her she takes after her father and say it negatively, that’s not good. There are a couple of things you could do: 1. Love her actively. Demonstrate your love by saying it and showing it in your actions. This will bring her some emotional satisfaction, which often times is what young girls seek when they allow themselves to be pressured into intimate relationships. 2. Talk with her. Ask about her relationships and what she does and what she thinks. Listen to her, try not to be too judgemental as that could scare her away. The objective is to try to understand what knowledge she has and also to impart useful lessons to her on dealing with peer pressure, understanding

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials The Scorch Trials starts up right where we left off in the first film, “The Maze Runner.” After waking up in a mysterious glade, with no money of his former life, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) successfully led a group of fellow captives through a lethal maze and out into the real world. Upon exiting the labyrinth, Thomas discovers they were all captives of the World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department (aka W.C.K.D.) – who was testing teenagers in order to battle a post-apocalyptic threat. Free of W.C.K.D.’S control, the gladers are res-

A New Season It is that time of year again, when the annual Charter Boat Show is on and we are all reminded that – it’s charter season again! Even though charter yachts are available and chartered all year round, the period from November to June is when we have the most visitors. The evenings are cooler, the trade winds are blowing just right during the day and all of the BVI’s bars and restaurants have returned from their well-earned breaks to bring new chefs, mixolo-
