Love is on the Menu Valentine’s Day is the one “non-holiday” in the BVI, where restaurants vie for the most romantic atmosphere and temptingly delicious dishes. While flower trucks are making their rounds, chefs are preparing special entrees capped with champagne and chocolate. You can start the day with a “Couple’s Breakfast Special” at D’Best Cup for $34.95, which offers a choice of steak and eggs French toast or a waffle special, juice and coffee followed by strawberries and champagne. Pusser’s West End and Marina Cay are offering a four-course extravaganza including a soup or salad starter, fish course, main course and if you still have room – a chocolate strawberry cheesecake with a special Pusser’s Rum sauce all for $55 per person (reservations recommended). Myett’s is rolling out a special Valentine’s menu with Evolution Band setting the mood for the evening. Special menus are also being planned at Long Bay Beach Club, the Sugar Mill, Sebastian’s on the Beach and D’Coal Pot – each pairing their savory meals with specials on Australian Blackstone wines, both merlot and pinot noir.

Sweethearts Sailing The 38th annual Sweethearts of the Caribbean and 34th Classic Yacht Regatta, is here once again bringing beautiful wooden classics to ply the BVI waters in a fun competition from the 12th to the 14th. Hosted by the Loyal West End Yacht Club, this event brings together those with an appreciation for the finely crafted wooden hulls of days gone by. Races in different classes will be starting and ending at Soper’s Hole on Saturday, the 13th and Sunday, the 14th. A Single-handed Pursuit Class, Schooner Class and an Open Class (boats any make or year) will race on

Saturday. On Sunday there are the Classics, Wannabe’s (20 to 25 year-old hulls) Couples Class and another Open Class. Registration is on Friday, the 12th at 6 pm at the Fish n’ Lime Restaurant, also the place for the awards and after racing parties on both evenings. For more information email Commodore Lou at jollylou.1@gmail.com

A Gala Affair for BVI Red Cross This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of the BVI Red Cross and their community service work in the islands. In honor of this event the Governor and Mrs. Anne Duncan are hosting a romantic evening benefit at Government House on Friday, the 12th. There will be a live auction, drinks and light refreshments plus musical selections by Neil Cline, Andre Brathwaite, the Stingray Singers, Surbhi Williams, Rochelle Smith and Elton Callwood. The event starts at 7pm and the donation tickets are $60 per person. Dress suggestion is elegant. Tickets can be purchased at the BVI Red Cross headquarters or call 494-6349.

VDAY with Cada Players This year the Cada Players will be doing a special celebration for “VDAY” in dance, poetry music and other expressions in the newly opened Firebird 7

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Persistent Exes Ask Koren Dear Koren, I love my boyfriend but we've been arguing a lot lately. First of all his exes won’t give up, they are really putting a gap between us. He says they are over and that he only wants me but his exes are really persistent. He already made our relationship public so they know but they don’t care. Do I stay or just go? Please help!!! –Frustrated

you are arguing about something else, then that could be a sign that something in the relationship needs fixing. A relationship is supposed to be a happy place and too many of us are in relationships that cause more stress than anything else. Do we need a partner so much that we would tolerate endless stress and drama just to say we have one? Ask your boyfriend to send a clear message to these ladies that he is no longer interested. It would be nice if he does it in front of you so that you get some reassurance, but even if he doesn’t, you cannot allow this situation to consume your life. You also have the option of ignoring these exes and not mentioning them and making them invisible. Focus on you and your boyfriend. I hope he is as committed as you are to the relationship and is not willing to let anyone get between you. Remember, it takes two to tango!

Dear Frustrated, I don’t know all what your boyfriend has told you, but let me tell you this. His ex girlfriends will not be that persistent unless they feel as though they have a chance with him or if he is not being firm enough with them. If he is adamant that he is not interested and he blocks them and deletes their numbers, they will get the message that he has zero interest and will likely back off. If they harass or stalk him after that, then he can report them to the police and get a restraining order. If on the other hand, he is telling you one thing and doing another or giving them hope, then they will continue to be a problem. You do not deserve to have your relationship with 3 or 4 persons in there. Why are you arguing a lot? Is it about the exes? Then stop. Either he leaves them alone or he doesn’t and if he doesn’t, then walk away from the drama. If

Bridge of Spies To recent generations, the Cold War – a time when the United States was locked into a fierce and deadly competition with the USSR – seems distant and perhaps irrelevant. At the time, the danger of a nuclear holocaust between the two superpowers seemed all too real, though, and both sides deployed spies to gather intelligence on the others’ capabilities. Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies brings the era to chilling life. The year is 1957 and Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a Russian spy, is arrested by the FBI. It is a forgone conclusion that he is guilty before he is even tried, but nonetheless, the government believes he is entitled to a good legal defense and recruits James Donovan (Tom Hanks). An insurance lawyer from a top New York firm, Donovan had been a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials (which tried Nazi war criminals after WWII). Donovan knows that in the mood of the day, he will be vilified for defending a Russian spy, but takes the case because he believes everyone is entitled to the best legal defense possible. Despite Donovan’s best efforts, Abel is convicted and is likely to be sentenced to the electric chair. But Donovan offers an unusual reason why Abel should not be executed – someday, the Russians may hold an American on espionage charges and Abel could be offered as a trade. Thus begins a tense chapter in US history, one carried out largely behind the scenes. In 1960 Gary Francis Powers, a US Navy pilot was recruited for a top secret mission. He was to fly a classified spy plane, the U-2, over the USSR and use state of the art cameras to photograph Russian military installations. As it

turned out, Powers’ plane was shot down over East Germany. Instead of destroying the plane and taking his own life as he had been instructed, Powers bailed out and is captured, along with a head full of classified military secrets. His capture triggered a race to free the pilot before he divulges any classified material, and Donovan is once again enlisted by the government. This time he was to secretly negotiate a high level spy swap for not only Powers, but an innocent American student who was also being detained. Travelling to East Germany Donovan embarks on high stakes negotiations for the two men. The Berlin Wall is under construction and Spielberg adroitly contrasts the bleak and icy gray city of East Berlin, filled with its desperate inhabitants, against the freedoms and comfortable lifestyle of the West. People who lived through that era will remember how the negotiations turned out, but whether you know how it ends, or not, Spielberg ratchets up the tension right to the last scene. Beautifully filmed and with an excellent cast, Bridge of Spies isn’t solely about a distant historical event. Today it’s terrorism, not communism that is the threat, and we are still debating how much of our individual rights we give up in order to protect society as a whole. 13
