Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

He Cheated After 10 Years

Ask Koren

If you have someone you can talk to and unburden with, that would be a wonderful thing as a support system can help you to vent and also hold your hand until you feel stronger. When you feel more clear-headed, then you can think about your relationship and what it means to you, if you are able to meet each other’s needs and why it never went any further in 10 years. Think about whether this is what you want going forward. If you really love each other and you can forgive him, then so be it. If you feel too much bitterness and resentment, then that would not be healthy for you both. There is no way to tell for sure what his motives are unless the topic of marriage has come up before. Yes, his decision could be to keep you or maybe he really wants it. Ask him directly why, he is proposing now and after knowing him so long, you might have an idea of whether he is genuine or not. People make mistakes but you should do what feels right to you and what you want for yourself thinking not only of now, but your future.

Dear Koren, My boyfriend and I have been dating for 10 years and things were okay. Although people used to say we together long enough to get married, I never push him. Now my world is just falling apart when I discovered he cheated on me. After being loyal to him all these years, I’m just so devastated and hurt very deeply. Now he is saying let’s get married and I don’t even know if he really wants it or if he is just trying to keep me from leaving him. How can I tell? –Hurting Dear Hurting, You have every right to feel devastated and betrayed and hurt at this time. You have invested a lot of time into this relationship and you do not deserve what he did to you. Even if you were okay with not being married and just dating, you still deserved a committed and monogamous relationship. I do not think you should make any decisions immediately about marriage. Try to focus on healing and getting past the pain. Focus on finding your identity as an individual and not just as part of a couple. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you are a special and wonderful person, who is loyal and committed, as you might be tempted to start blaming yourself and asking, “What did I do wrong?”

40th Anniversary of Carifta Games Appearances I can easily relate to this year’s Carifta Games team, especially the ten eager new members who are making their first trek to the annual regional championships. It was 40 years ago (stop guessing my age) that Rose Phillips, Ephraim Penn, Delores Barzey and I, along with officials Theda Bucknor and Johnny Hassan, made the the territory’s inaugural venture to the Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas in 1976. On Monday, Rose, Johnny, Ephraim and I reunited and were on hand when the the BVI Athletics Association officially announced a team of 21 athletes to represent the territory at the 45th Carifta Games in St. Georges, Grenada, who will begin competition on Saturday morning and continue through Monday night. No longer will we be going just to be in a few events and then watch the meet, but the 2016 team, the bulk of which is home based, will in action through the last event on the program, the 4x400m Relay. Some 19 of the 21 athletes have recorded a personal best mark this season, while five athletes have established six outdoor National Records and three have met IAAF World Jr. Championships qualifying standards. “The coaches have worked tirelessly to make sure that the athletes are prepared for the Carifta Games,” Chief Coach Dag Samuels said during the press briefing. “I am grateful that we have such a team that can represent the territory. I can pledge one thing to the territory, that we have on our team—finalists. We will be finalists in every event that we do and that will make any country proud.” Samuels thanked the athletes for putting out their best and said when they get to Grenada the BVI will show the rest of the Caribbean, that they hail from the BVI and will always be a force to reckon with. “On behalf of the coaches I say thanks to the athLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

letes and we will move forward with a positive and trustworthy goal to do great at the Carifta Games,” Samuels said. The memories each athlete will have and the friendships developed from competing in the Carifta Games, I can attest, will last a lifetime. And, in an age of instant communication—unlike in my era—will keep athletes in contact, many of whom could eventually branch into sports administration, like I and some of my contemporaries did. The Carifta Games is a unique experience. I trust that all will embrace it. The 2016 team is comprised of: U18 Girls: Beyonce DeFreitas, 200m; Arianna Hayde, Javelin Throw, Long Jump; Z’Niah Hutchinson, High Jump, Xiomara “Gia” Malone, High Jump: Judine Lacey, 400m, Shaniyah Caul, 400m and Akira Phillip, Javelin Throw. Boys: Djimon Gumbs, Shot Put and Discus Throw; Joshua Hill, 800m; Rackeel Jack, 400 and 800m; K’Cei Moses, 200 and 400m; Rikkoi Brathwaite, 100 and 200m. U20 Girls: Tarika Moses, 400 and 800m; Nelda Huggins, 100 and 200m; Britney Peters, Javelin Throw; Lakeisha Warner, 400m Hurdles & 800m; Deya Erickson, 100m Hurdles; L’T’Sha Fahie, 100 and 200m; Kiwanna Emmanuel, Discus Throw. Boys: Akeem Bradshaw Long and Triple Jump and Ronique Todman, 200 and 400m. 12

The Road Less Travelled As much as the BVI has made it on the international map as a vacation destination spot and a worldrenown financial center, our roads – sad to say – reflect something more comparable to a boobytrapped car race competition in a third-world infrastructure We only have two main roads, generically known as; the coast road and the ridge road and all the rest are smaller rivers and tributaries off these two main thoroughfares that traverse the island from east to west (or the opposite considering your perspective). There does not seem to be a time when there is not on-going construction or urgent need for repair on these two main arteries or a vital link between the two like Joe’s Hill Road, Long Trench Road or Fahie Hill Road. So driving by daylight, let alone the perils experienced after dark is a daunting task for even the most skilled driver. Why does the DMV concern themselves about parallel parking or not coming to a full stop, when they should be testing drivers’ license applicants on their ability to dodge major potholes and brake for unmarked “sleeping policemen,” that crop up all over. Drive courses could be set up with bright orange cones one must swerve around, and then miss big puddles (because roads aren’t planned here with proper drainage), then dodge the potholes large and small, and the concrete blobs with sharp edges (that concrete trucks dump off their trucks when cleaning out after a day job). Then you must straddle the lower unfinished section of road both BVIEC and the Department of Water and Sewage have torn up within a few months of each other and finally do this all in the dark with another drive tester right on your Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

bumper with his bright lights blinding you – and then, maybe you are qualified for driving on BVI roads. However, you will still have to learn the “tricks of the trade,” which includes understanding that detours will become a part of your island knowledge, and Fahie Hill, which has little to no designated parking becomes a one-way street when restaurants and bars are hopping. Be aware driving into Road Town on weekdays after 8:30am means long lines, and you must dip deep into your inner wells of patience not to be overcome with a malady known as “road rage.” For weeks now the latest “hot spot” has been the Sea Cow’s Bay area and for those who must drive this route daily, I have the most compassion. With the influx of travelers for BVI Spring Regatta held at Nanny Cay right around the corner, I am hoping the last repairs to this unfinished roadwork are completed. I appreciate the hard working road crews we have in the Territory, who work day and night. My concern is with the execution and forethought. It seems an overall comprehensive plan for our road infrastructure, reflecting the quality of so much the BVI has to offer, would be far better than what appears a “patch and fix” concept, making many of our roads – “the road less travelled.” 14
