This Week’s Feature Story by Arlena Smith

Celebration 90 Years with HM Queen Elizabeth II Two, to The Queen’s Coronation in 1953 and a reign spanning more than 60 years. There are a slew of events planned locally to mark the celebration such as the “breaking of the Salt Pond” on Salt Island, which had long been an important part of BVI culture and commerce. But as the years went by the ceremony was abandoned. Now, 40 years later as part of the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, the ceremony was held once again. The salt collected filled a bag (designed specially by local artist Aragorn Dick-Read), which will be presented to the Queen for her birthday. There is also a Roadshow to the Territory’s Schools, A Souvenir Stamp Unveiling, a Parade and Lighting of the Queen’s Beacon – all to mark this prestigious event. Thursday, April 21st the Queen’s actual birthday has been declared a public holiday. On Sunday May 15th night the Celebration will be broadcast live on ITV in a two-hour programme and on this evening the best of British talent from the entertainment industry will join in the Celebration. Tune and be a part of this once in a lifetime historical moment.

This year marks the 90th birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and the celebrations marking this milestone are well underway. The Queen made her first official visit to the British Virgin Islands when she was 40 years old and had been on the throne for 14 years. She became the longest reigning monarch in the world in September 2015 and her 90th birthday will be a celebration of The Queen’s life, her love of horses, her dedication to the Commonwealth and international affairs and her deep involvement with the navy, army and air force. The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebration event will take place over four nights from 12th to the 15th May 2016 in Home Park Private, Windsor Castle with members of The Royal Family attending each night, including The Queen who will attend on the final night, of Sunday the 15th of May. On all four nights, over 900 horses and 1,500 participants from around the world will descend on the private grounds of Home Park Private, Windsor Castle. The pageant will take us through a remarkable life from The Queen’s birth in 1926, through World War

Eight Signs Your Relationship Needs An Overhaul

Ask Koren

Perfection is an elusive goal and we get that, but that does not mean that we cannot find happiness and contentment in our daily lives. For many persons, things are good at work, financially, they are making enough to live on and have a reasonable savings, their health is okay and they have reached those fitness goals, but yet they are miserable and unhappy because their relationship is a constant struggle or source of distress. Here are some things to look for which are warning signs that you need to pull out the relationship tool box or call in a professional, if you both are not getting the job done right: 1. There is a need for control. You have lost yourself because your partner wants to have the final say on everything. He is in the driver’s seat and you are merely a passenger who never gets a chance to make a valuable contribution. Or it could be a case where you both have strong personalities and everything becomes a fight to be on top and to win instead of a mutuality that lends itself to peacefulness. 2. The relationship is too crowded. Your mother, his ex, your friends, his boys. A relationship is between two persons and while you both have your separate support network, they should know their boundaries and stay out of your relationship.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

3. There is dishonesty. Six months of dating and your partner still doesn’t know much about you that he or she should know. If you catch or hold someone with a lie, sooner or later the truth will come out and you are not just likely to lose them, but also their respect and your reputation. It is not worth it. 4. The communication patterns are poor. When you disagree there is shouting, name calling and you stop talking for days. In a healthy relationship, there is respect, mutual listening, sharing and apologies, if mistakes are made. 5. One person is the savior. Were you not broke or needed a place to live, you would not be in this relationship. You sometimes feel like a prostitute because you need the person’s help, but you really are not in love with them. You need to figure out your way to independence so, that you could be in a relationship where you both can contribute to and receive from it. Come back next week for the conclusion to our Eight signs your relationship needs an overhaul .

Salt Island Renews A Tradition In 1974, I had the privilege of attending a very special ceremony. It was the “breaking of the Salt Pond” on Salt Island. The ceremony was attended by long-time residents of Salt Island: Clarence and Beatrice Smith, Clementine Smith and Norwell Durant. Also in attendance were the Governor, members of Government and other dignitaries. The Salt Pond on Salt Island has long been an important part of BVI culture and commerce. Before refrigeration, beef and fish were salted for preservation, ships passing through the British Virgin Islands would stock up on salt while in the area, and residents would travel to the island for their own supplies. Harvesting was generally in the spring when the water in the ponds evaporated, leaving their salt content to form a hard crust on the bottom and at the edges of the pond. No salt could be harvested before the pond was declared open by the governor or the administrator; hence the annual ceremony. There was a speech by the Governor, a member of the Royal Virgin Islands Police would fire a shot in the air, and the islanders would walk to the pond and start reaping the salt. But as the years went by and the number of residents on Salt Island died or moved away, the ceremony was abandoned. Just a small amount of salt has been harvested as of late, packaged and sold in Road Town markets as a spice blend containing Salt Island salt. Now, forty years later as part of the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, the ceremony was held once again. And once again I got to attend. The ferry, which left the Road Town dock at 8:30am, was filled with Salt Island descendents. The Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

police boat containing the Governor, the Premier and other officials, followed along. Salt Islanders have a great deal of pride in their heritage. And to have the pond breaking ceremony reenacted was an important milestone. Once again, the Governor gave a speech, as did the Premier and several Salt Island descendents. A member of the Royal Virgin Islands Police fired a shot in the air, and everyone – I would guess around 100 of us – walked to the pond. There was no official reaping of salt that day. It was just a little too early in the season. But enough salt was collected to fill a bag (designed by local artist Aragorn Dick-Read), which would be presented to the Queen for her birthday. In days gone by, the Queen was presented with a bag of salt annually as rent for the use of the salt pond, which is on Crown land. Next year will be the 150th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Rhone off the shore of Salt Island. At the time, Salt Islanders helped to rescue the ship’s handful of survivors, and buried the victims who washed a shore. To commemorate the event, the salt pond breaking ceremony will be held once again – an island tradition that is no longer lost to time. 12

Kung Fu Panda 3 Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman make an audience-pleasing return to this hit animated film series. Back on the big-screen scene after an almost five-year hiatus (not counting the spinoff TV series), Po and the Furious Five still have all the right moves on display in Kung Fu Panda 3, a terrific-looking entry in the Oscar-nominated franchise. The new adventure finds Po expecting to fill the shoes of his beloved instructor Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), teaching the finer aspects of kung fu to Tigress (Angelina Jolie Pitt), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and Viper

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “subgrids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution. See next weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
