This Week’s Feature Story by Arlena Smith
Gospel Power-House Sherwin Gardner Live in Concert Get ready to get your praise on, as the Transformation Church International will be having its 6th Anniversary celebration from September 16-20. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Spirit of Jubilee.” The celebrations have become a tradition for TCI and this year there will be a number of apostles and prophetesses visiting from both near and far to spread God’s word. There will also be a grand concert featuring gospel and reggae legend, Sherwin Gardner and his band out of Trinidad. Sherwin started singing at the tender age of five. He made his public concert debut at the Himalaya Club singing the church classic He Touched Me. That experience proved to be the launching pad for a music career that continues to hit new highs. He is a composer, music producer and multi award winner and has been spreading the gospel around the globe for a quarter of a century. His latest album titled Veinticinco (twenty-five) was done in celebration of his 25 years in ministry. As an artist he has shared the stage with many of today’s gospel greats including Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, to name a few. He has also stamped his mark as producer on an impressive list of artists including Vanessa Briggs, Sean Simmonds, and so many more.
The turning point for Sherwin was his 2002 release Leaning (Lion of Zion), which catapulted him into the international limelight on both gospel and mainstream charts. He was also awarded Most Impacting Artist at the 2002 Barbados Flame Gospel Awards. Sherwin’s second international release, Closer, produced the number one radio single He Died For Me (Hamalhamadla). So this Saturday TCI would like to invite everyone to what will be nothing short of a lifechanging event. Apostle Hank said, “everyone should come on out expecting a change, the worship will be like no other.” Sherwin will also be ministering on Thursday and Friday night and there is a day session scheduled for Saturday morning with the grand concert event-taking place Saturday evening at the Eileene L. Parson Auditorium at 7:30pm. Prophetess Judy Turnbull from St. Thomas will also be a part of this spectacular event and dance group Prophecy in Praise, Wings of Worship and Garment of Praise will also be on hand to minister through dance that evening. This promises to be a night like no other so don’t miss your opportunity to hear this Godly force live in the BVI for a night of worship and praise. Tickets are $20 Adults and $15 Children under 12. For more info contact 340-8242/8244 or visit their website at www.tcibvi.com.

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Concerned About My Sister
Ask Koren
If nothing is happening, you don’t want to open a can of worms but you could have a general conversation with your sisters and talk to them about boundaries, good touch bad touch, privacy, etc in the context of school, on the street and at home. Just keep the conversation very general and ask them if anything has ever happened to either of them that they were uncomfortable with or want to share. You could have the conversation together or separate. Do also talk with your mother too. Yes, she might be defensive but keep it simple. Just tell her that the children are at an age where they need privacy when dressing and as young ladies it is important that they know about boundaries with male persons. At this point, there is no need to mention her boyfriend. You don’t want to antagonize her and have her tell you that you can’t come back there because then you won’t be able to keep an eye on things. If you yourself have had a history of being molested or abused, you could be hypersensitive to these things. However, I think you should trust your gut feelings and be observant without jumping to conclusions. In this case, prevention is better than cure.
Dear Koren, I have two younger sisters and my mother moved into her boyfriend’s home with them about a year ago because she got a son with him. They were dating for just a few months before that. I visit the home a few times and I really don’t like the way my mother’s boyfriend relate to my sisters. The boy is his and he don’t hold him up like he does my sisters and I saw him help the young one put on her uniform and my mother don’t seem to think anything is wrong with it. Should I ask my sisters if they feel uncomfortable or talk to my mother about it or am I just being paranoid? They are 14 and 9 years old. –Concerned Sister Dear Concerned Sister, I don’t think you are being paranoid; I think you are being cautious. As an older sister, you have a right to care about your younger sisters, the environment they are living in and what happens to them. Maybe this man has no impure thoughts and is just a loving person who expresses himself using physical affection. If that is so, then that would be good. However, as your sisters are not biologically related to him and he has only been in their lives for just over a year, one would expect that there would be some boundaries. They are young ladies and he did not grow up with them from a young age so he might not have that deep fatherly instinct towards them.

Micromanagement Having houseguests who also happen to be one of your grownup sons can be challenging. It’s a balancing act, trying to gage how much time I want to spend with them (a lot) as opposed to how much time they want to spend with me (0? – well, maybe a little bit more). My youngest son, who lives in Florida, was scheduled to fly into St. Thomas with his girlfriend recently. My first alarm bell went off when he told me he was flying on Spirit, which runs late as a matter of corporate policy. So it was no surprise when he called to let me know he was going to be an hour late and would likely miss both the 4:15 boat from Charlotte Amalie and the 5pm from Red Hook. In true soccer mom fashion, my first thought was to take control of the situation. Do I call and make a reservation at a hotel in St. Thomas? Do I organize a special taxi to pick him up at the airport, or do I phone the ferry company and ask them to hold their boat? It was tempting to try and influence the hand of fate, but I got a grip on myself and did nothing. He was a capable young man. I had brought him up, hadn’t I? In the end I did nothing and the late ferry syndrome won the day. The 5pm Red Hook boat left at 6pm, creating the ultimate ferry service irony. Not only did he turn up at 5:15 for the 5pm boat, he waited 45 minutes for it to depart. Once I got over the “will he make it today” ordeal, I started to relax. Do not micro manage this visit, I
reminded myself. He grew up on this island, he knows what to do. Nonetheless when he announced a daytrip to Virgin Gorda, I found myself calling the ferry to check on times (can’t be too careful when it comes to ferry schedules), reserved him a rental car and gave him a road map so he could find his way around Virgin Gorda without the help of GPS. Did a millennial coming of age in a world of iPhones and google maps possess map reading skills? Or was it redundant like the appendix, becoming functionless during the course of evolution? No problem, he circumnavigated the island in record time, visiting all the major sights from the Baths to Hog Heaven – and I am pretty certain that he never glanced at the map. He managed the rest of his trip without my input – successfully organizing his days and evenings to maximum effect, leaving me on the sideline as a contented bystander marveling at his efficiency. I guess this should be a relief. I now only have myself to organize – and that’s stressful enough.

20th College Classic Series Kicks Off Geez man. I just can’t believe I’m penning that the 20th College Classic Series opens this Saturday. Please…..say it ain’t 20 years already! I remember the day Lenford Levy (RIP Bro) Karl Dawson – now Dr. and HLSCC President – and I measured the course from the college’s round about through the Paraquita Bay farm. In discussion with Karl, we wanted to find an event that would involve college students and the community. Since not many people were into road racing because they were afraid of the “crazy drivers” (aren’t they still CRAZY?), this was the ideal venue. I’d earlier returned from a running community in Boulder, Colorado, when I attended the University of Colorado and wanted to see mass participation in running events in a community where it wasn’t a chic thing to do. Nobody wanted people seeing them exercising! Luckily, the course we found measured exactly two miles. “How would we know when we’re getting to the one mile turnaround?” was a common question.“When you smell the Pigs, you’ll know you’re close,” I would say. In the early years of the series, races began at 4 p.m. with the few diehards, before it moved to the current 7 a. time. And, over the years it has grown to have races with well over 200 participants. The concept behind the development of the series when it began was for athletes whose sports were in the off season to use the races as part of conditioning in preparation for the next season. In 20 years no team sport nor association has taken it seriously. Track and Field athletes have capitalized and over the years, many who have gone on to represent the territory in running events are alumni of the series.
College Classic Series 2014
Over the years, a Cross Country segment has been introduced and students from St. Thomas’ high schools and the University of the Virgin Islands have participated. Noted Stephanie Russ Penn who now directs the event. “We’re doing a couple things different and will introduce a One Mile for U11. It’s sometimes a struggle for the 9 and 10 year olds to easily transition from the One Mile to the 2 Mile. Looking at the ages and the distance, it makes more sense that they don’t do such a long distance.” Of course, that will cause Russ Penn to make changes in the Cross Country area. The Rotary Club of Tortola has dominated the Service Clubs division, winning the last 10 successive titles. Will another group step up this year? There are also numerous personal competitions taking place and the camaraderie of the event is unparalleled. So, get your running shoes on and join in the event. You’d be quite surprised who you see on the starting line ready for a friendly rivalry. Next weekend, the series kicks off in Virgin Gorda at 7 a.m. 13

Straight Outta Compton Straight Outta Compton takes us back to inner city Los Angeles in the latter half of the 1980s, to the gangviolence and brutal policing policies of Compton, California’s streets. There we meet Eric “Eazy-E” Wright (Jason Mitchell), a hard-edged drug dealer who’s running out of luck when it comes to avoiding death and/or jail. Eric’s friend Andre “Dr. Dre” Young (Corey Hawkins) is a local DJ dreaming of hip-hop glory, but is weighted by the burdens of being a father and struggling to make ends meet. Dre’s friend O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.) is a gifted hip-hop poet just trying to survive daily life as a Compton youth. O’Shea Jackson Jr. had a greater responsibility than his co-stars in Straight Outta Compton he was tasked with portraying his father, legendary rapper Ice Cube – he not only rises to the challenge, but he nails his portrayal of his infamous father with his uncanny ability to embody him, not to mention the overwhelming resemblance. One thing is clear when he and Dre unite on stages at local clubs, their hardcore hip-hop music turns into something special. Dre convinces Cube and Eric they should get into the music business as a way out of the hood so they decided to start a record company and take a chance at it. Backed by Eric’s ill-gotten street funds, they launch Ruthless Records gathering local talent like Ice Cube, Eazy E, and friends DJ Yella (Neil Brown, Jr.) and MC Ren (Aldis Hodge) into a hip-hop group known today as N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitude) that would bring the unique sounds and realities of life in Compton to the mainstream music scene. When their debut album Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
dropped in 1988, N.W.A.’s, first studio album Straight Outta Compton took the hip-hop world by storm. Before long, the boys had an enterprising manager named Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti), a new image as the world’s most dangerous group, N.W.A., and a string of hit records that make them rap stars and unbeknownst to them would make them rap legends. Their album Straight Outta Compton ushered in the era of “gangsta rap” with its wildly successful single F*** Tha Police, a song that got the band a warning letter from the FBI for its profanity and violent lyrics against law enforcement. One of the high points of the movie is in Detroit, where the police chief orders N.W.A. not to play F*** Tha Police or they’ll be hauled off to jail. The band, of course, makes the song the concert’s thunderous set piece. That song would go on to become the anthem and a point free speech following the beating of Rodney King in the 1992 street riots in L.A. Not just another bio-pic, in reality, it is a complex, daring and tragic account of the effects of racism, injustice, betrayal, and censorship. It’s definitely worth seeing. 14
