BVI Theatre Series presents - NTL Man and Superman should be something for everyone!” Man and Superman is a romantic comedy, and a fiery philosophical debate that asks fundamental questions about how we live. Ralph Fiennes takes the role of Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Bernard Shaw’s witty, provocative classic. Jack is a celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor and seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets “The Devil.” An extraordinary dream-debate, heaven versus hell, ensues. Following in hot pursuit, Ann is there when Tanner awakes, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his. Don’t miss your chance to catch some great theatre this season. Tickets available at House, Digicel and the Watering Hole, $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $10 for students and HLSCC staff.
Appleby and HLSCC have come together again to bring us the third season of the BVI Theatre Series, which kicks off this Saturday. The National Theatre Live was launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of Phèdre starring Helen Mirren. Since then they have shown more than twenty other productions live from the National Theatre, and on occasion other theatres in the UK and around the world. Over 3.5 million people in more than 1,100 venues around the world have now viewed the broadcasts. Past shows have included Frankenstein, War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and King Lear to name a few. Satellites allow the productions to be broadcast live, without delay, to cinemas throughout the UK and venues around the world can view the broadcasts 'as live' according to their time zone, or at a later date. The first in this year’s series is Man and Superman showing at the HLSCC Auditorium at 7pm this Saturday. Nadia Menezes, co-ordinator of the BVI Theatre Series said, “We've planned a mix of dramas, comedy and, for the first time, a musical, so there

Friends Not Supporting My Business
Ask Koren
ter value or more for their money elsewhere. You can ask them why they are not supporting your business and ask them for ways in which you can improve. If jealousy or “I don’t want her to get rich off of me” is what is driving their reluctance to support you, then they are not real friends. I would suggest two things: One, market your business far and wide to a broader community than just the persons close to you. If the products or services that you are offering are good, you will get business. It may be a slow start at first, but by giving excellent customer service you can retain persons who come to you and their word of mouth referrals can help you to get new customers. Use social media and other forms of networking. Secondly, Stop having so many expectations of others. Believe in yourself and fight for your dreams. You invested money already, now invest time, creativity and sweat. Friends are an important part of your life, but when it comes to business, it takes more than their support for you to be successful. Your focus for success should be more on strengthening what you have to offer, marketing to a wider audience and learning from your experiences and the experiences of others. Don’t give up, just adjust your expectations and change your perspective. Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton
Dear Koren, I’m disappointed with the way we women behave towards one another. When they not trying to take your man, they spreading rumours about you. I started a little business and when I mentioned it last year, my friends said it’s a good idea. Now I notice they are not being supportive. It’s like they don’t want to see me succeed. I am very frustrated because I invested all my savings in this and they are going elsewhere to get what I am offering. I am just so turned off of my so called friends and didn’t expect this. What should I do? –Frustrated Dear Frustrated, Sometimes the persons we expect to support us the most are the ones who disappoint us. We have high expectations of our friends and loved ones, but unfortunately, they are human and they disappoint us. Whereas we would brush off the bad behavior of an acquaintance, we can’t help but take it personally when a friend does something we don’t like. So I understand your frustration. Has your attitude changed since you got into business? Do you have an attitude of entitlement that pushes them away? It would be a good idea to look not only at their behavior, but also at yours. Going into business is something that should be well thought out and it is a mistake to expect a business to thrive with just the help of friends. Yes, you want their support, but people should not be obligated to spend their money with you, if they can get bet-

Far from the Madding Crowd For a movie based on a 19th century novel by Thomas Hardy, Far from the Madding Crowd is unexpectedly modern. Bathsheba Everdene (Cary Mulligan), who owns a modest farm in the English countryside, is a feminist before the word was invented. She works hard and enjoys her life. Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a handsome neighbor with a successful sheep farm, admires her and proposes, but Bathsheba enjoys her life as it is. To Bathsheba, marriage (as it was at the time in England) means handing over her property and independence to her husband, so she refuses. Bathsheba’s life circumstances soon change though, and when her uncle dies, she inherits his large and prosperous farm. Whether a husband, or manager, it is assumed that she will have a man run it, but instead, she takes charge of the property herself – replacing workers and making it an efficient enterprise. After losing his sheep farm, Gabriel’s situation also changes, but for the worst, and despite his pride, he comes to work for Bathsheba. His new station in life relative to hers means there is little chance that he would be able to marry her now, so he works hard, becoming indispensable to the management of the farm, but he remains aloof. In the meantime, gentleman farmer, William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), is smitten with Bathsheba and proposes. He is earnest, and well-todo but dull; and still preferring her independence, she declines. Everything changes though, when a dashing soldier, Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge) starts to court her. He is sexy, enchanting, and looks smart in his uniform. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
And although it is obvious to all around her that he is a cad, she falls for him and they run off to get married. Following a passionate honeymoon, they return to the farm where the match begins to unravel. Frank is a drunkard, wants nothing to do with working on the farm, and loses a great deal of money gambling, so much so, that he has endangered the farm. He is also in love with another woman, Fanny (Juno Temple), who’s gravely ill and pregnant. Both Oak and Boldwood observe the dissolution of Bathsheba’s once ordered life helplessly – in 19th century England, divorce is out of the question and Bathseba has to live with her disastrous mistake. Fate though, intervenes, affecting the lives of all the characters in this romantic web in unforeseen ways. Far From the Madding Crowd is beautifully filmed with sweeping panoramas of the English countryside and a plot that takes the viewer on a journey to another time, which as it turns out, is not so far from ours. 10
