Breast Cancer Awareness Month #CancerSucks As the month of October is upon us we shed light on Breast Cancer Awareness month and people all over the world are banding together to show support to those lost, those fighting and to the ones that have survived. While much progress has been made in breast cancer treatment and research, more work remains. Breast cancer remains the second-leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer. The leading risk factor for breast cancer is simply being a woman. Though breast cancer does occur in men, the disease is 100 times more common in women than in men and women are at 200 times more at risk of developing the disease compared to the risk in men. This month the BVI Cancer Society continues to work to support those fighting as they bring awareness to what is quickly becoming one of the leading killers in our community. Something like an estimated one in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. The aim is getting women more knowledgeable about warning signs, the importance of self-exams, treatment options and second opinions, so they are better prepared than ever. There are activities planned throughout the month including free health fairs, A Day in the Sun
Beach Jam and the popular UMI Pink Fashion Show, Paint the Town Pink, Walk for a Cure and Masquerade Gala. The president of the BVI Cancer Society Ms. Gloria Fahie said, “This year they want to encourage people to join the fight and come together to battle against cancer and finding a cure. It’s not just breast cancer, it’s all cancers and we need to band together to help find a cure.” We have all been touched in some way by cancer; it may have been a relative, a friend or a friend of a friend. As we continue to fight we hope that one day soon modern medicine can find a cure for this awful disease. Stand up and show your support to those fighting and even those who have lost their battle – we can still fight for them. See ad on page 10 for details. In loving Memory of Crystal Authurton Rest in Peace

and you should never forget that. 3. Focus on the action and not the person. Sometimes it’s not always easy to separate, but with practice you learn how to complain about the person’s behavior without attacking them. Absolutely no good can come from telling someone that “they are a worthless pig”. They will get defensive, angry and they will never forget your words. 4. Forgive as you would like to be forgiven. Even when your partner messes up, sometimes we have to be forgiving. Some of us look for every opportunity to keep throwing some past action back into someone’s face. That is a big no-no. 5. Never forget the good in your partner. This same person who is making you angry today is the one who washes your car every weekend or prepares your meals twice a day or sends you flowers every week. Keep things in perspective. Call them out on their wrongdoing, yes, but don’t let one thing blind you to the big picture. It’s not always gonna be easy but you can weather the relationship storms if you both work together at it and practice win-win fighting. If you think your relationship is worth it, then give it a try.
When the love bug bites, it is exciting, wonderful and you hear music playing in the background when you think of the sweet smile of your loved one; but don’t for a moment think it’s going to be smooth sailing all along. When you take two persons with different personalities, who grew up in different homes with parents who raised them differently and they have different opinions about life, of course, these couples are bound to disagree some times. Wouldn’t we be lucky if it was just a simple disagreement that ended with a shrugged shoulder and a sigh! But no…sometimes it ends up in name calling, angry cursing, someone slamming a door, someone walking out and the one left behind wetting their pillow with tears all night and in some extreme cases, the conflict can even lead to separation. Here are five things that couples can do to resolve conflict, keep loving and both come out as winners. 1. Take responsibility for your actions. None of us are perfect and we need to admit our role in the scenario instead of always seeking to blame the other person. You don’t have to take the blame for something the other person did, but be bold enough to admit when you are wrong and commit to changing. 2. Always be respectful even if in conflict. We can all overreact when we are angry but resist the urge to tell the other person about their mother or embarrassing them in public. This is someone you love and care for

David to Skype’s Goliath What do you do when you run up against a company so big and so technologically driven that they will do nothing to help the little guy, the consumer, who has an issue with their service? The consumer is me and the big company is Skype, now owned by software giant Microsoft. For years I was a big fan of Skype. There is the free Skype to Skype calls one can make on the computer, which works well if the person you want to call is at their computer. But for me that is rarely the case. I want to call landlines and cell phones, primarily in the US where much of my family lives. So I purchased a telephone number - $60 per year and an annual subscription for unlimited calls to the US – around $79 a year, plus $10 additional credits so I could call the UK and other places beyond the US. Then a few weeks ago, I noticed that my service was “blocked.” So I attempted to get in touch with customer service. As it turns out, Skype is an Internet phone company that does not have a phone number. They do have a chat line. Instead of solving my problem, they sent a link to a very long form. “Could you please explain why my account is blocked?” I wrote on the form. The form was met with an automated reply: my query was important to them and they would get back to me in 72 hours – that’s three days! I wasn’t that important it seems. Eventually Don G. wrote back: “Your account is blocked due to suspicious activity. ” And told me that if I wanted to use Skype in the future, I would have to open a new account. So I wrote back once again and asked, “What suspicious activity!?” And, “how do I transfer my paid-for
credits to a new account?” A day later, I received an email from “Cherrie D. “Since your account is suspended due to suspicious activity, the credits will remain on your account, and because it is blocked cannot be used. Because of this, the system was triggered to suspend your account. This is in line with the process that we have under our Terms of Use.” Not ready to give up, I tried again to explain my situation, and wrote back, if “Cherrie D” could not help, could she please put me in touch with someone who could. A day later, the answer came back from John M.: “It is a pleasure to assist you” – and then the identical message as before. I was in a “Catch 22”, spinning on a merry-goround I couldn’t get off. Skype/Microsoft had the upper hand: they had snatched my credits, making this multi-billion dollar company $100 or so richer, and leaving me that much poorer. I am still trying to figure out my next move, but in the meantime I have downloaded Magic Jack, an alternative phone app that works just great, and for a lot less money. 11

A soldier through-and-through, he teams up with the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. as a field agent working S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L.
