NTL: Of Mice And Men ‘humbled’ to be chosen. "I can't think of a greater honor that could be bestowed on this production of Steinbeck's masterwork than to have an opportunity for millions of theatre lovers around the world to see our production under the auspices of National Theatre Live," he added. Of Mice and Men is directed by Anna D. Shapiro and features Leighton Meester famously known for her role in Gossip Girl. This is the second show from the BVI Theatre Series being brought to us by Appleby and HLSCC this season. The National Theatre Live was launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of Phèdre starring Helen Mirren. Since then they have shown more than twenty other productions live from the National Theatre, and on occasion other theatres in the UK and around the world. Don’t miss your chance to catch to catch this classic production. Tickets available at House, Digicel and the Watering Hole, $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $10 for students and HLSCC staff.
Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee James Franco (127 Hours, Milk) and Tony Award nominee Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids, Girls) star in the hit Broadway production Of Mice And Men. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck’s 1937 play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament of friendship and will be aired on Saturday, October 24th at 7pm at HLSCC. The symbiotic relationship between smart, scrappy George (Franco) and his hulking, brain-damaged friend, Lennie (O’Dowd), is at the heart of this 1937 play about the broken, homeless men (bindlestiffs, they were called) who wandered the country, living from farm job to farm job, during the great depression. Of Mice and Men will be the National Theatre Live’s (NTL) first Broadway production to be screened live in cinemas around the world. The NTL said it was "thrilled" to add US theatre to its roster of live screenings, which began five years ago. The play's producer, David Binder, said he was

Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Fussing Time AskAbout Koren Dear Koren, I would like some advice on dealing with my fiancée. We are planning to get married next year December and I’m trying to hustle to make enough money to pay down on a house. I’m holding down two jobs but she keeps stressing that I’m not spending enough time with her and it’s frustrating me because I can’t be in two places at once. I’m trying to do the right thing and still being made out to be the bad guy. What should I do? – Fiance
solid foundation for your future because the wedding is not your only priority, but the marriage moreso and you would appreciate her understanding. Let her know that her wishes are also important, so you will do your best. If she is the organized type, then try to schedule at least one date night per week and then throw in some unexpected ones; nothing gets a woman more than surprise “thinking of you” texts or unexpected lunch dates. When she sees you making the effort, she will appreciate it. Also, talk to her about your plans. Perhaps she is just seeing that you are absent and not understanding why. Start planting the seeds of compromise and communication from now and it will ripen and bear fruit for now and for the future….sweet fruit you will enjoy when you have a happy lady at your side.
Dear Fiancé, It’s nice to see that you are planning a solid future for you and your wife-to-be and I believe that you have good intentions, which is very important. It sounds like your head is on straight. However, don’t make the mistake of focusing so much on the destination that you miss the journey. The here and now is just as important as the future. You could be so busy setting things up for next year that next year could come and you realize that you have grown apart. The trick here is to compromise; to give quality time when you can’t give quantity time and to not argue with her when she complains of not seeing you enough. It’s a nice thing that she enjoys being with you. Explain to her that you are working on building a

Swim for a Cause One aspect of living in the BVI that I really enjoy is the fact that it is a relatively small community, so when people hear of others in need – help is close at hand. One heart warming example of this, is the Bone Crusher Charity Swim event that is being held this coming Saturday, October 24th at 8am – a breath-taking 5.3 mile swim from Brewer’s Bay to Jost Van Dyke to raise money for T’Shonda Dore a bright, funny and outgoing eleven year old girl who is battling with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). Without treatment AIS is a debilitating disease that has meant that she even had difficulty attending school as she was unable to sit upright. The Bone Crusher Charity Swim open water swim or SUP is being spearheaded by the team at Alternative Energy Systems (AES) and supported by Prosolar Systems, Deloitte and Maples. Thankfully, T’Shonda has now had her emergency surgery (off-island), which was a success and she is coping well with her mother at her side. They have even recently moved out of the hospital to try and keep costs down, however T’Shonda still has a long way to go. The medical bills are rising and are already over $17,000 and that is without the hospital charges and on-going doctors appointments and rehabilitation. So, it was awesome news to find out that Richard
Branson has offered his support by committing to match dollar for dollar any funds raised at the charity swim event. He has donated $5,000 in advance to help the family’s immediate needs and $3,000 has been raised so far of that matched amount. So that is a huge encouragement for all involved and a timely reminder for all us to try and help in anyway that we can to help reach the fundraising target of $65,000. So, what can you do? To register for the swim, SUP call Caroline on 346 8125 or Cayley on 340 2179. Cheques can also be made out to Maples and Calder who are managing the payments towards T’Shonda’s expenses. You can make all the difference by making a donation, sponsoring one of the swimmers or joining in the swim or SUP. As of last week four swimmers had registered and it’s still not to late to try an open water swim for a great cause!
