Raising Dion Let me tell you how excited I was to watch this series after I saw the trailer advertised on Netflix. If you haven’t started to watch it yet, do so ASAP! Raising Dion is an excellent superhero series that shows a different take on the genre. It has enough suspense and twists to keep you glued to the TV. If you’re a parent, at times the dialog will get under your skin because of some of the things the main cast says or does. The series is about a single mother who hides her young son’s superpowers to protect him from exploitation while investigating the death her late husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan). In the beginning, Dion (Ja’Siah Young) showed his mother Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) what his superpowers were while they were out on the lake. He does so by raising the fish out of the water using telekinesis. As the series progresses, Dion’s powers continue to frighten Nicole. She turns to his godfather Pat (Jason Ritter) and he volunteers to investigate Mark’s past. After finding a name and number in one of Mark’s shirt pockets, Nicole decides to give the person a call. She eventually meets Charlotte (Deidre Lovejoy) and realizes she too has superpowers like Dion. When Pat decides to take Dion on a trip to Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
BIONA, they end up breaking into a classified area (with the help of Dion). Dion heals a sick fox and steals a crab, then causes a power outage for them to escape. After getting a new job, Nicole struggles to give Dion his dream birthday party but with the help of their neighbor, Tessa (Dana Gourrier), who makes sure things run smoothly until Nicole can get off work. Due to work, Nicole gets reacquainted with an old passion and Charlotte offers to take Dion under her wings. Not knowing he is being monitored Pat receives a promotion at work. Once you have superpowers, you can’t get sick right? Wrong. Dion is rushed to the hospital because of a strange sickness; meanwhile, Nicole is stuck at work. Pat goes ahead to ensure he is safe. When Nicole requests a favor from her sister Kat (Jazmyn Simon), she protests and eventually realizes that she has to comply. After Dion returns home, the crooked man comes too close to home. His mother takes him out of the city and they soon get the shock of their life. On the way to school, the crooked man follows Dion, but thanks to his best friend Esperanza (Sammi Haney) and friend and group mate Jonathan (Gavin Munn) they are all able to defeat him. Who is the crooked man and what happens to Mark? What is BIONA? Find out all these answers by watching Raising Dion on Netflix today. 4
Elton Georges Diabetes Awareness Run/Walk The BVI Diabetes Association is celebrating 40 years of Service. Did you know that diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high levels of sugar in one’s blood? Four simple ways for prevention of Diabetes are regular health screenings, a healthy diet, exercise and no smoking or drinking. On Saturday, they will be having the 2nd Annual Elton Georges Diabetes Awareness Run/Walk from 5–7am. The route is from the Queen Elizabeth II Park to Ebenezer Thomas Primary School. Vol. 31, 28 / Oct 24 - Oct 30, 2019
So, in last week’s issue (Vol 31, 27) I told you about my long weekend plans, the plans others had for me. Well let me tell you, only one event got pulled off. On Saturday, I got some muchneeded pampering. By the time I was finished and got back home, it was well after 8pm. So sadly, the family and I missed the movie on the Pier. Sunday wasn’t much different either. I didn’t get to take the last class I had planned, but I enjoyed a more priceless day by simply spending the time relaxing with family. It felt so good not to worry about the things I usually do on a Sunday, because the next day was going to be a holiday. I would normally have to prepare for work and school the next day, which is a whole taste. Monday, went exactly as planned though. Let me tell you, first, I felt like a tourist at Brewers Bay because I hadn’t been there since a few years before hurricane Irma. It’s been roughly seven years (or maybe more) since I had been down to that area. In fact, the last time I was down at the beach, the picnic area was not developed. Oh wait, I think the last time I was actually there was one summer when the bands had a jam there each Sunday leading up to the festival. Back then, the cows ran me straight back to the vehicle (I probably imagined this chase because I’m so afraid of animals), but I know I didn’t stay. Besides the rough waters trying to kill me, it was a great day well spent Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

with my kids (I birthed two but I have six. It’s always a mix-up when I mention all these kids belonging to other people, but they’re still mine). We attended our church’s ‘Fun Day’ on the beach and for someone who never planned on setting foot in the water, much less the sand, the smaller kids had me in there for three hours blocking waves and making sure they were safe from the tides taking them back out to sea. So, you can imagine the water bruises I have now. My son however, who is the eldest, was braver, but he still stayed close by and followed my orders just to put my heart at ease. Many times, we brag about living in paradise, but what’s the point of living in it and not enjoying it or hardly doing so? I don’t own a vehicle so I don’t go out much but when I do, I’m always amazed at the beauty of this place. You don’t need much cash to enjoy the blessings of the paradise God gave us. With a full tank of gas, it’s easy to drive to the park with friends/ family or have a drink (it doesn’t have to be alcohol) at a beach bar. Having fun on Monday reminded me that I always had access to paradise and my goal is to try and enjoy it as often as I can. Guess what? It costs very little money and can even be free so there is no excuse. Get up and go outside. Don’t forget to take your loved ones with you and make some memories.

Devious Minds Chapter 1
“Theresa, give me the bottle. Stop being so greedy,” Patrick shouted at his friend who was hogging the bottle of rum for the last ten minutes. “No, I need it more than you,” she whined. “I had a shitty day,” she continued. “Girl we all have shitty days, look at us and where we are right now, so give me the damn bottle b**ch,” Patrick told her once again. All the while Theresa and Patrick were fighting over the rum, the triplets, Destiny, Diamond and Diana were in the corner eating all the food because they were high as a kite and had the munchies. The group of friends were all atop the roof of an abandoned building, chilling as usual. They had been friends since childhood, and no matter what road life took them along, they always stuck together. “Why don’t y’all help me get the bottle of rum from Theresa?” Patrick asked the triplets. “She already drank most of the other one and trying to do the same with this one.” “Oh shut up Patrick and stop whining,” Theresa shouted before any of the triplets could comment. “You had enough for one night, so sit,” she continued. The triplets burst out laughing. There was a moment of silence before anyone said anything. “You know, I thought by our mid-twenties we would all be on our way to success but look at us. It’s not that we don’t have the knowledge and skills to be on top. It just has some mean ass people Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
blocking our path. I think we need to take them down and we’ll be on our way.” said Diana. “I know what you mean sis, that witch at my job has problems,” Diamond remarked. “I just got an idea, why don’t we take down everything that’s keeping us from succeeding, including those horrible supervisors we work for,” Patrick stated to the group. “I don’t mean killing anybody, just stop holding our tongue and speak out against their treatment. Show the higher bosses that we are valued assets,” he continued. “I get what you’re saying but I don’t have the courage to do something like that. I mean look at me, I have no sex appeal, no social skills and besides you guys, I have no other friends. I’m totally what they call an outcast,” commented Diamond. “I don’t know why you downplay yourself like that Dia, you are so beautiful. To me the better looking one in the bunch and don’t talk about that killa body you hide under your loose clothing,” Theresa told Diamond. Truth be told, Diamond was the better looking of her sisters. She looked exactly like her late fashion designer grandmother. The triplets were not identical, there were various ways to tell them apart. “Okay, it’s getting late. Lets just all give what I said a thought and when we meet again let’s discuss. I mean what harm can be done? We’ve been treated wrong for a minute now, it’s just payback now,” Patrick told the ladies. 12
The Invisible Wall Remember as a child we used to hear the statement, “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? Boy, do we know that is so untrue. One negative or awfully critical comment and our whole day goes off kilter. Yet, we can’t stop people from cursing in traffic, we can’t stop neighbors from gossiping, we can’t stop coworkers who are verbal bullies and the reason we can’t stop all those things is because we can’t control other people. We need to say it again, “I have no control over other people”. What we do have control over is how much we internalize their words and how we let it affect our feelings. Let’s try something. Imagine you are a superhero and you have an invisible wall around you. Nobody can see it, but it protects you from the negative comments that are unnecessary and that steal your joy. Imagine that when these comments come at you, they just bounce off because you have an invisible glass wall around you. So, when others expect to see you get angry or frustrated, you just shake your head or smile and walk away. 13
It’s a symbolic way to block yourself from negativity and it works best if you follow some other tips: • Don’t take things personally. People act out for their own reasons and even when directed at you unfairly, it might not even be about you. • As much as possible, avoid toxic people and choose to be around persons who are uplifting and positive. When we don’t have a choice but to be around certain people, we can choose to not let their attitude penetrate our wall. • Watch your thoughts. Sometimes we ourselves are thinking so negatively, that we perceive everything others say as an attack or we tell ourselves negative things, and in that case, the invisible wall becomes ineffective because the negative energy is coming from us. Remember that you do have some control over your space and your energy. Protect it fiercely and even if you allow someone else to penetrate your sense of peace, don’t allow the feelings to linger long enough to take root. Vol. 31, 28 / Oct 24 - Oct 30, 2019
Battle Underway For The JFBL Title After a dramatic conclusion to the Julian Fraser Save the Seed Basketball League regular season, where Skillful Ballers turned back defending champions Bayside Blazers, 102-92 on Sunday, playoffs will begin on Friday to determine if the Blazers will fend off their seven challengers and retain their title. If the regular season is any indication, the title is up for grabs as the Bayside Blazers finished 5-4, with Pure Playaz at 8-1 and Skillful Ballers, 7-2, finishing as the top two teams. “I come to win,” Skillful Ballers coach Ronnie “Gola” Simmonds said after Sunday night’s win. “They said I can’t beat them and I worked out just for them. The guys started coming practice and that’s all I needed.” Simmonds said he took away their point guard and nullified their ability to dish out the ball effectively. “Once I took away the point guard, they were considered dead,” he noted. “They can’t play without a point guard. They have a lot of guys who are trying to play point guard but, that’s not their right position. That’s all I did—took away the point guard.” Bayside Blazers coach Jason Edwin was in awe of Skillful Ballers. “We ran into a team that one to twelve, was focused and ready for the task at hand,” he pointed out. “At moments, we weren’t sure as a unit what we wanted to do. We’re still trying to figure out ourselves as a new team, we were like one player here, one
player there but not as a collective unit, so when we tried to make a run, they answered back and it left us flat, so we’ll address that going forward.” Bayside Blazers will face Momentum on Friday in the first game of their best of three series. Edwin said they were going to review film of the Skillful Ballers game, critique every possession and show players what they should expect during games. “Saying it on the fly, sometimes, it’s difficult for some players to grasp, but we’re going to break it down and show them what we’re asking,” he said. “We will take away some positives and some negatives to help us improve going forward.” Simmonds said his Skillful Ballers squad who will meet DA 3rd, is ready for the grind. “We’re going all the way,” he predicted of his team that faces DA 3rd in their first-round encounter. “To the end,” he added. “I’m looking ring.” Throughout the season, every team was gunning for Bayside Blazers and Edwin acknowledged that they had been prepped for them as they sought to defend their title. “We have to get every player to understand that every possession will count,” he said. “Sometimes you feel like the calls don’t get in your favor but we have to play still. We can’t hold our head or hand on one call.” Admission to the playoff games is $7 at the Save The Seed Energy Center.
