One thing you need when you live on an island is a reliable way to stay connected. Sure, most of us are pretty good at checking in with our co-workers and neighbors, but what about all those friends and relations in far away places? That’s what the internet is for! Indeed, I feel very blessed when I hear about unlucky island dwellers of not-solong ago, for example, the North American transplant who was so homesick and had just enough to drink one night that he thought it would be a good idea to borrow the company phone to make a massively expensive long-distance phone call. Nope, we lucky folks of today can fire up one of any number of social media sites and scroll through our feed or sit back and watch the latest stories to see what our peeps all around the world are up to. But, and I can’t be the only one who falls into this trap, how do we know when we’ve had enough? A quick check can keep you informed, but did you know researchers are finding more and more evidence that too much Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

scrolling, rather than helping us feel connected, actually causes most people to feel isolated? Take the way people often use
their Twitter pages to vent their problems. Everyone needs an outlet, but it’s stressful for us as readers to take in so much negativity all at once. One Pew Research Center study showed that more time reading people’s tweets is correlated with a higher stress level. Other studies have pointed to links between social media use and anxiety, feelings of envy, a reduced amount of sleep, and, for women and girls, reduced self-esteem. On second thought, maybe I’ll log off the internet a little early this week and make an old-fashioned long-distance phone call!

She Devil
An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary
Chapter 5: From Business to Romance What a night! Thank goodness it was the weekend and I had already covered my assignments because I didn’t walk through my door until 6am. I was still thinking about David and what we’d done in the VIP room. He made such an impression on me that I agreed to so something I never thought I’d even consider: We are going out on a date today, and not the kind where he has to pay for my attention. I actually can’t wait to see him again. *** I can’t believe David was so funny. After how quiet he was in the club for so long, he made me laugh our entire date. I learned that he works out of state, but his family is here in Miami. He told me he was a playboy, but that he got the hots for me. I never thought on Troy for a moment. I was too much of a professional to let my guard down entirely with David, but I sure was going to enjoy our freak sessions. As I turned around to wave goodbye to him one last time before I walked in my door, I thought what a gentleman he was to walk me safely to my door. I was just about to turn off my night lamp when I heard my phone beep. I was getting excited thinking it was from David only to realize that it was from Troy. He’d started trying to get me earlier in the day and it seemed like my non-response was just making him desperate. I figured he was mad about my night in the VIP room since I never spoke to him last night 11
at the club or even informed him when I was leaving like I normally would. I’m surprised he noticed the way he was all up on Britney, all night, but don’t worry I got something coming for those two. *** “Dammit!” I screamed at the car in front of me, they were driving slow as hell and at the rate this traffic is moving, it looks like I’m going to be late for class. “All right everyone, that’s time. Don’t forget to read those two chapters for next class and please come prepared to debate in groups,” my professor said. I had just come out my final class of the day and couldn’t wait to grab a bite. I should head to a café and complete my reading assignment while I eat. As I pulled up to the club later, I prayed it was a regular slow Wednesday and I needed some rest before tomorrow’s class. Troy’s angry voice startled me on my way to the dressing room. “Don’t act like you aren’t hearing me Angel,” he barked. “Why you been ignoring me for days?” I should have tried to keep the peace, but I couldn’t help but snap back: “Why you acting like you care? Britney not giving you enough attention?” I stormed off before his trifling self had a chance to get in my face so I wouldn’t be forced to actually knock him out. I was not in the mood, and tonight ain’t the night for anyone to try me. Vol. 30, 43 / Feb 7 - Feb 13, 2019
At Her Beck And Call
Dear Koren, My boyfriend and his ex-girlfriend have a child together. He fully supports his child; he spends time with him, pays his school fee, purchases household items for them, buys food etc., and still gives his ex money to support his son. These I have no problem with. However, there is something unnerving about this relationship, every time the ex has her personal business to do, she calls on him and although he seems upset, he still goes. If she needs to go shopping or to the hairdresser, he takes her. I am concerned because while he is probably thinking that if she is happy, his child will be happy, I think that her motives are otherwise. On top of that, when my family members see him doing his ‘transportation’ duties, they ask about our relationship, which is a stressful conversation. Should I tell him that I am uncomfortable that his ex has him at her ‘beck and call’ or should I say nothing or leave the relationship? – Concerned girlfriend Dear concerned girlfriend, Your concerns are legitimate. It sounds like your boyfriend is going above and beyond the call of duty. His obligation is to his son, not to the son’s mother because he is no longer her partner. The line has to be drawn somewhere but it might be difficult because it seems like she has already gotten accustomed to his being constantly available. Maybe his father didn’t do right by him when he was growing up, so he feels he has to go the extra mile. I would not worry about his having to make her happy to ensure his child is happy; once he is Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
providing for his child’s needs and spending quality time with him, that should be adequate. He should set boundaries with his ex. He is not her chauffeur; he is simply the father of her child. The fact that he gets upset should let you know that he already knows she is overdoing it. Unless of course, he is just pretending to be upset to throw you off. I would encourage you to be patient with him. Not doing anything is not an option because her behavior is affecting him, affecting you and affecting your relationship. He does not sound like a bad person, so leaving seems a bit drastic. I prefer you speak to him about it, but do not make it all about you. You also have the option of going with him sometimes when he is going for his son, which sends a clear message that you are the main woman in his life now. When you share your concerns with him, please let him know that you admire his obvious dedication to his son and the way he makes his son a priority. It is important that he knows that your concerns are not with his fathering skills. Many men do not do what he is doing, so it should be highlighted. Remind him that his function and purpose is much higher and bigger than being someone’s go-to guy when they need a ride. Also remind him that the relationship with his ex should be limited to their activities as co-parents, and that, as the current woman in his life, your relationship would be so much nicer if he could focus on you in the way you focus on him: without the distractions of a lurking ex. 12
If you are into scenic cinematography, royal-family-level intrigue, or crosscultural romance, Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy to watch. Early in the movie, college economics professor Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) asks her fellow academic boyfriend Nick Young (Henry Golding) why he never talks about his family - They are planning a trip to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding and she will finally be meeting them. Nick dodges the question, but Rachel is shocked when the pair are treated like celebrities on the flight over. She’s in for a lot more surprises. When they arrive, Rachel is lulled into comfort by meeting Nick’s bestie Colin Khoo (Chris Pang) and his fiancé Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno), who are both charming and sweet over dinner at an outdoor food court. The next day, Rachel takes the opportunity to reconnect with a friend from her student days, Peik Lin (Awkwafina). Peik Lin and her family are Singaporean “new money,” which means they’re low-key obsessed with old money families like the Youngs. Peik Lin and her father Wye Mun (hilariously played by Ken Jeong) explain to Rachel that Nick’s family, plus the families of the friends who are about to marry, are the “Crazy Rich Asians,” of the film’s title. Peik Lin jumps at the chance to 13
style her easy-going friend in a manner befitting meeting royalty, but Rachel’s great new look doesn’t keep her from getting snubbed by Nick’s frosty mum Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh) at a fancy dinner in the family’s sprawling estate home. Before the couple can really hash it out, it’s time for them to head off for separate bachelor and bachelorette parties. The easygoing Araminta from the food court is almost unrecognizable surrounded by her fellow fashionistas, and Rachel feels lucky to strike up a conversation with Francesca (Carmen Soo), a lawyer in the party. Unfortunately, it turns out that Francesca is an ex-girlfriend of Nick’s, and Rachel winds up the victim of a mean prank. When the extravagant partying is over, Rachel thinks that as much as she loves Nick, all the drama with his circle of family and friends might really be too much for her. Peik Lin is having none of it, however, and reminds her friend that while Eleanor and the other Youngs might see Rachel as unworthy of their favorite son, all Rachel has to do is put on her game face. Will Rachel and Nick’s relationship withstand the family pressure long enough to make it through Singapore’s wedding of the century? Crazy Rich Asians is available on Netflix and other streaming services. Vol. 30, 43 / Feb 7 - Feb 13, 2019
BVI Cricket Association Elects 10th Leader Looking around the sporting landscape, sports such as basketball and football for example, governed by the BVI Basketball Federation and the BVI Football Association respectively, will be marking their 45th anniversary of existence this year, both having been formed in 1974. Cricket, governed by the BVI Cricket Association, was founded in 1945 and is the Granddaddy of them all. The association elected Vajendra Baharat as its 10th president on Thursday, January 31st. With no 2018 BVICA season, Bharat said as president, his goal is to get cricket back soon, possibly in late March. He said that they have some work to do on the Greenland Grounds, including netting, fencing, sight screens and a new playing mat. “We inherited a board with absolutely no finance; finance will be our biggest challenge to have cricket up and going,” Bharat told Island Sun Sports. “As of the Annual General Meeting, no financial statements were produced; we haven’t heard anything from the past administration in regards to what the BVICA have financially. I was told they have absolutely nothing from members of the past board. This coming week, I’ll go to the bank to get a financial statement from them to see where we stand. I know we’re in for a challenge and I’m looking forward to it.” Kiddy Cricket is something that has been on the agenda and will be addressed, Bharat said, adding that there has been funding from the West Indies Cricket Board (WIBC) in the past, and that he plans to reach out to them to understand the current staLimin’Times Entertainment Guide
tus of the funds. If needed, he said he will seek local sponsorship to get the program back up and running. “There was a program several years back, where players from clubs underwent training, they went to the schools and trained the kids who were interested in cricket to develop them at a young age,” he noted. “I know the program was there and I would like to see it back.” Bharat said they will approach the schools regarding having the program at that level and designate players from the different clubs who are willing and are qualified to train them. The new leader said he’d like to see a national side again. “It hasn’t happened for years. Normally, a national side is picked after the local league, so I strongly believe we’ll have a team this year.” Regarding the clubs affiliated with the BVICA, Bharat said he’d like to see clubs more involved— not just in playing cricket but reaching out to youths from the schools in the Kiddies Cricket Program they’re trying to reintroduce. The aim, Bharat said, is to have interested players who have been trained to lead the process in getting this initiative off the ground. Joining Bharat on the BVICA executive team are: Vice President Neil “Pow” Niles; Secretary Tameka Johnson; Assistant Secretary Marcia Fredericks-Nicholson; Treasurer Jasmattie Yamraj; Assistant Treasurer Cameron Williams; Public Relation Officer Daniel Singh; and Committee Members Alvin Africa and Brent DeFreitas. 14
