encing as much of what it has to offer for visitors as they can for the last month. “These girls have hiked Sage Mountain, parasailed, ziplined, dived into the beautiful Virgin Islands waters, cooked fish and fungi…” to better understand the BVI as a destination, Andrea said. At the launch, contestants will also walk the runway in BVI-print swimsuits, part of Absolutely Unique’s “The Islander” swimwear collection. The launch party costs $20, and will be held at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall at 7pm on October 15th. Get your tickets at Chic Trends, the mobile fashion shop usually located in the Waterfront parking lot behind Sunny Caribee. Some aspiring models will also have the chance to join Naima and the contestants on stage Saturday if they attend Pose, an interactive modeling workshop on October 14th at the JTV studios upstairs at UP’s Cineplex. The two-hour workshop costs $10 and will cover everything from how to pose like a pro to understanding the fashion industry. To register, contact Andrea at 340-1951.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the BVI will meet the four young women who are vying to represent the territory on the world stage as Miss Tourism BVI next year. The winner will compete against some 80 other women representing tourism destinations around the world in the Miss Tourism World pageant. The Miss Tourism BVI pageant is slated for March, but since this will be the first time the BVI will name a Miss Tourism queen, organizers wanted to make sure the pageant kicks off in grand style. “We are committed to making this launch event an unforgettable experience,” said Andrea Wilson, one of the Miss Tourism BVI organizers. To that end, the party to launch the territory’s first Miss Tourism pageant is set to include performances by entertainers and cultural performers like America’s Next Top Model winner Naima Mora, singer Ouida, Relentless the Band, Mrs. BVI 2015 Shevone Findlay, The BVI Heritage Dancers and Mocko Jumbies. Andrea says that the pageant is different from others because the woman crowned will be tasked with promoting tourism in the territory. As “tourism ambassadors,” the contestants have been travelling the territory and experi-

Smartphone Science I’m the type of animal-lover that prefers not to have to touch wild creatures, so when I heard that I could help with a frog count without ever laying eyes on one, I was on board immediately. The Great VI Frog Count is part of an ongoing project by University of the Virgin Islands researcher Renata Platenberg, who is collecting and analyzing audio recordings of frogs in the greater Virgin Islands. Scientists have long used sound to identify different animal species, but technology allows researchers like Renata to do more now than ever. Software can be taught to recognize the unique calls of frogs like the Virgin Islands’ own native coqui, and audio recordings can be geotagged, which allows for detailed maps of where different frog species are living. This, in turn, can help scientists learn about localized frog habitats and help them discover microclimate areas. Living in town, I tend to forget that I share my environment with more than just feral cats and roosters. The project forced me to stop and really listen to the sounds nature makes at night. There were buzzing insects, rodents rustling in the bushes, and even though I was recording just off the main road, I could hear what sounded like Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

many frogs. This was a fun project to be a part of and you can do it too – but only for the next week – data should be collected by Oct. 20th! If you want to participate, start by downloading the free Record the Earth app from the App Store or Google Play. Once you have the app, find a quiet location away from sounds like traffic, people, televisions or barking dogs. Take your smart phone to your chosen spot between 7 and 9pm (that’s when frogs are most active) and fire up the app, making sure to give it permission to access your location. Next, simply tap the big red “rec” button to make a two-minute recording. Don’t worry if you don’t hear any frogs, their absence is important data too. After you end your recording, you’ll be prompted to answer a couple of questions about it and then you can hit submit. If you’re in a location where you don’t have a strong signal, you can wait until you’re back in range or have a wifi signal, just make sure to submit your recording by Oct. 21st. For more information about the project, email vi.frogcount@myuvi.net. 6

SPOTLIGHT This Week’s Story by Laura Thomas

TURBO POWER Alvin Dore, aka DJ Turbo, is a former track star that has earned many supporters as a DJ because of his love for music and for entertaining people. Not only does he play for events, he is also a Radio DJ. You can catch him on 106.9FM He’s on air Mondays – Fridays from 8pm – 11pm and on Saturday from 8am – 1pm. DJ Turbo’s influence to play music came from his former 5th form classmates: the first people he would make mixes for and with were his friends in school. That inspired him to start tampering with his mom’s records and turntables. He also loved going out to listen to veterans such as DJ Wiz, Dj Commodore, DJ Pops, DJ Juice and DJ Outlaw when he first stated in the business. His passion grew more after realizing that he had the vibes and talent. When DJ Turbo is not playing for an event or on the radio you can find him mentoring other upand-coming DJs. He is also works full time at the

Water and Sewage Department and loves spending time with his son and the rest of his family. You can catch DJ Turbo at the Hotspot in East End and at Village Cay on Fridays for their Happy Hour. In November, he will have a Sound Clash and plans to travel for some overseas gigs. You can find DJ Turbo on his Facebook page, Alvin TurboSounds Dore, or you can email him at daddyturbosound@hotmail.com. You can also reach him at (284) 343-2767. Over the years DJ Turbo has played for many events and different clubs, some of which are not in business anymore but he would still like to say a big thank you to them for their support over the years. Places like Tree House, Upper Level, Virgin Queen, Secrets, Quito’s, Rock It Up Night Club, Rock Café, After Shock, Stones and Limers Night Club. “I would like to say a big thank you to all my fans. Thanks for your support and standing behind me through the years,” DJ Turbo said.

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.

Money Monster A taut thriller with a message, Money Monster stars George Clooney at his stylish best as Lee Gates, a financial guru who hosts a popular cable network program, also named Money Monster. Clooney prances around the television set with gleeful zeal and outlandish costumes offering the stock pick of the week. Unfortunately one of his picks, Ibis Clear Capital, experiences what is believed to be an algorithm glitch and tanks. Badly. And a lot of investors lose their money. One of them is Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), a working class deliveryman who has a hard time making ends meet. His inheritance of $60,000 had been invested in Ibis and Lee lost it all. During the course of the show, Kyle appears on the set with two boxes. Inside one is a gun and in the other an explosives vest which he has Gates put on. He wants Ibis founder and owner Walt Camby (Dominic West) to explain on air what happened to his money and why, and he is not going to leave until he receives an answer. As one of his conditions, Kyle demands that the show stays on the air and Money Monster’s dedicated director, Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts), the cameraman, technicians and millions of television viewers world-wide, all become a part of this high stakes drama. In a race against the clock, Patty and crew must locate Camby, who is believed to be aboard one of his private jets, and is proving to be frustratingly elusive. But find him, they must. Throughout, Patty keeps her cool. She tries to defuse the situation by feeding Lee instructions Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

through his headset, and continues searching for Camby. Instead, she loGeorge Clooney & Julia Roberts cates Camby’s Communications Director Diane Lester (Catriona Balfe), whose bland statements parroting the computer glitch excuse, only further inflames Kyle. Ratcheting up an already tense situation is the New York City police force which is quietly sending in sharp shooters to take Kyle out. Just as modern finance is globally interlinked, so is the search for Camby. Hackers in Iceland are contacted and the algorithm designer in Japan is located and called to see if he can shed light on the cause of the glitch. When Camby is finally located, the answers are both surprising, yet not unexpected: there is more at play than meets the eye. As time goes on we begin to feel sympathy for the hapless Kyle, a victim of a system that is stacked against him, and even for the egotistical Lee, who begins to empathize with his captor and his plight. Money Monster is an entertaining gambit that spotlights the precariousness of our lightning fast, algorithm based financial system. It will make you think twice before you put all your eggs in one basket – or take advice from a telegenic financial guru. 14

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Is It Too Soon? Ask Koren Dear Koren, I’ve known a guy for 3 months and we really clicked a lot and have gotten so close. I’m 24 and he is 36 and I wish I had a dated a mature guy all these years before. He asked me to move in with him and my sister is telling me to be careful but I’m really glad to leave where I am and I want to be with him all the time. I know this is the real thing but I need some advice. How does a person tell if what they going through is real love? – Reader

away from your present situation is not a good enough reason. I would suggest you relax, enjoy this new relationship, but take things slowly. Get to know each other really well, spend lots of time together and do not neglect yourself or your other obligations. One of the greatest indicators of true love is that it stands the test of time. Also, the person cares about your well-being as much as they care about their own, you can have disagreements and not be abusive and still respectful. True love cares about more than the physical: the person cares about your dreams and what matters to you. They seek to build you up and not pull you down and always have your best interests at heart. It’s good that you are happy and on cloud nine, but you might still be in the honeymoon period of the relationship. If it is meant to be then time will tell.

Dear Reader, You sound quite smitten and what you are experiencing is normal. When we are longing for love and we meet someone who seems nice, it is easy to get close quickly and to want to be in the person’s company all the time. I totally understand your feelings. Also, a man of 36 would know exactly what to say and do to sweep someone off their feet, especially as you’re younger and probably less experienced. I think it is too soon to move in. At this point, I doubt you know him well enough and living together is different from just seeing each other. Moving into someone’s space means you give up some of your independence and perhaps even some of your rights. If it was a situation where you were both moving into a new place together, that would be different, but you are going into his space where he is used to doing things a certain way and would have a lot more control. By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

Eyes on Captain Caesar schools are looking for me right now and some have been asking for video highlights and have been following my game,” he explained. “All in all, I have to give God thanks for giving me the talent and I also have to thank the BVI Football Association for the opportunity to come here for another year, as well as my parents and church. For the last year I’ve been performing at a high level and that has continued this year as well. I’m working hard to score a goal in my next game so that my stats can go up, so I can get more people looking at me from other schools.” Caesar, who’s also captain of the BVI national team, said he has improved every year after leaving home. He said playing with different people from around the world including England, Australia, Egypt and South Africa has made him stronger mentally and made him more patient. He added that being captain has made him more of a leader. He said the strongest area of his game is his vertical leap. “I jump really high and no one can out jump me, especially on the corners, that’s how I score most of my goals,” he pointed out. “Every game, a coach will have two players on me. From last year through now, there has been no player that has out jumped me, so that’s one of my strong points along with my aggressiveness and my tackles is one of the most effective asset I have on the team. That’s one of the reasons my coach always puts me at the back because bringing the ball from the air, putting in those tackles are very important.”

Footballer Troy Caesar, a sophomore and captain of Georgia’s Andrew College team, is making a name for himself and being eyed by university programs across the USA as well as by

Caesar is looking forward to ending his stint in Georgia on a high note in his remaining six games. “From the summer, I’ve been preparing myself for the season and from the beginning of preseason to this point in time, I’ve been performing very well,” Caesar said. “My coach appointed me captain of the team this year and I have to thank God for that. The first was earlier in our last conference game.
