Yoga Retreat When you think of yoga, you probably picture a very slim blonde who can touch her nose to her knees, but people of all sizes, shapes and levels of flexibility can benefit from a personal yoga practice, which is why Dr. Calisa Cruikshank created the Sangha Health and Wellness Yoga retreat this weekend at Scrub Island Resort. Dr. Cruickshank was still a medical student when she discovered some of the benefits of yoga. “I saw how it was a wonderful tool to help cope with college life and stress,” she said. Later, when she had the opportunity to complete a yoga instructor certification, she knew teaching yoga would be a way not only share the benefits of yoga, but to change people’s perception of who does yoga. “I want yoga to be more diverse, it’s not just for a certain body type or ethnic group,” she said. These days, yoga is just one part of Dr.

Cruickshank’s holistic philosophy of wellness, which also includes other healthy lifestyle habits like wholesome eating and taking good care of mental health. With that in mind, the Sangha Yoga Retreat this weekend will be full of beginner friendly yoga courses, guest speakers on various health topics, and group meditation sessions. Saturday’s program will begin with a welcome and meditation, then continue with a yoga flow session, a health talk, brunch, a yoga session in the pool, and close out with a restorative yoga session. On Sunday, participants will do power yoga, then have a health talk, brunch, a detoxifying yoga session, and close out the day with meditation to live drum music. Each retreat day begins at 9am and runs until 6pm, and tickets are $50 per day. Buy your advance tickets at Mellow Moods Café or by calling 440-1685 or emailing sanghayogabvi@gmail. com.

It’s graduation season, which means I am seeing many of my younger relations and friends’ children dolled up to be promoted up and out of pre-school and primary school this week. It got me wondering, where do the traditions of caps and gowns, tassels, processions and all the rest of the pomp and circumstance we associate with graduation ceremonies come from? It seems that in the case of the cap and gown, the tradition started off as at least a little bit practical. The hallowed halls of colleges and universities were also quite drafty back in the medieval days, so scholars followed the example of their brothers and sisters in the monasteries and layered up. They would wear their (then hooded) robes on the regular just to keep warm! In fact, wearing robes regularly to classes and on campuses continued into the 1800s, although by the 1900s scholars were saving them for special occasions. Of course back in the day, the caps wouldn’t look like the ones we see today. Like the robes, they’d have been made of a warm wool, but there would have been a whole set of styles and colors to indicate things like area of study or rank within the institution (this is still done today, with the general rule Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
6
being that the fancier the hat, the longer you had to study for your degree). Again, by the early 1900s you would have seen the mortarboard and tassel style we’re so familiar with today. Speaking of tassels, they have their own story! People have been making and wearing tassels for a very, very long time – Moses even mentions them to the Isrealites in the Hebrew Bible! When it comes to graduations, tassels started as purely decorative and might have been worn on a shoe as easily as a hat. These days, they’re a very specific symbol: when you start your graduation ceremony you wear your tassel on the right and moving it to the left symbolizes your transformation from a student to a graduate. I’ve never been at a ceremony where people do this, but a popular tradition (or maybe just a cinematic one?) at some ceremonies is to toss the caps at the end of the ceremony. This one was started in 1912 at the US Naval Academy in Maryland. Apparently, the graduates were so happy they were getting to become officers upon graduation instead of having to serve for two more years as midshipmen that they all threw up their caps at once. Our hats are off to all the graduates; congratulations class of 2018.

BOOK REVIEW
By Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel
We’re Going to Need More Wine Everyone knows Gabrielle Union as as the incomparable Isis from the 2000 cheer movie Bring It On, or from her longstanding role as the title character in BET’s Being Mary Jane. The ageless actress recently revealed that she is also a talented storyteller in her book of essays and reflections We’re Going to Need More Wine. If you’ve read any celebrity “memoirs” over the last few years, and there have been many of them, you might be familiar with the inclination to gloss over your own mistakes and wrongdoings in print, leading to a story that is both duller and less true. Gabrielle Union does not play that game. In these essays, she unflinching recounts her childhood as the token black girl in a predominantly white suburb; coming to terms with her sexual assault; owning her power and sexuality; becom-

ing g a leader in Hollywood despite despite the pressure to assimilate into the “norm” of whiteness, and even transitioning from one marriage where she was the powerhouse earner into one where she is not. Side note: Am I the only one who didn’t know she’s been married to Dwayne Wade since 2014? In short, this book is not a woman’s life story, it is a handful of raw stories from her life. If you want to be able to create a timeline of Gabrielle Union’s life so far, this will disappoint. On the other hand, if you think you’d like tales that are by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and inspiring, you should definitely give this one a go. We’re Going to Need More Wine is available on Audible or as an ebook.

Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 9: A Villain Returns
Jazz “What the hell are you doing here?” I asked Kevin. How dare he disappear when I needed him the most and then show up at my office out of the blue like this. “I came to see you and find out about the baby” Kevin responded. I stood up from behind my desk and close the door trying to decide whether to civil give him a piece of my mind. “Well, I miscarried two months ago. There is no baby,” I said. Maybe I should have left it at that but I just couldn’t hold my tongue, “not that it’s really your business. You said you didn’t want anything to do with me or the baby when I told you I was pregnant.” Kevin sat in silence for a minute before he responded “I know. I’ve been keeping tabs on you. Besides, I can clearly see that you don’t have a belly when you stand up. To be honest I felt like shit for turning my back on you, but my pride wouldn’t allow me to reach out to you before now. Jazz I’m so sorry to walk out when you needed me the most.” At this point I was crying. We messed around for three years and I’d never seen him show so much caring. Who was this new person in front of me? I was so caught up in my thoughts and crying my eyes out that I never saw when Kevin got up and came around my desk. I only felt his Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
strong arms holding me. God bless my office is sound proof because what happen next would have the cleaner cursing me. Kevin As I walked back to my ride I couldn’t help but smile, Kev you still got it boy. After all that drama she’s still in love with me… I almost felt sorry for her. I didn’t need a paternity test for that baby, I knew it was mine. Now she learned a lesson: Stress kills. Anyway, she should keep her place now. I’ll carry on doing what I please, event cheat on my wife if I feel like it, but I had no intention of leaving her. Jazz As soon as Kevin left my office, I got a call from a detective asking me to come down to the station. Puzzled as to why, I quickly grab my stuff and rush out the door. When I arrived, Detective Montgomery introduced himself and led me to what looked like an interrogation room. He told me to have a seat as he sat on the opposite side across from me. What was this about? “Ms. Burns, do you know a Shelly Burns?” the detective asked. “Yes,” I responded. “She is my step-mother, or was actually. She was married to my dad up until he died a few months ago. What about her?” I asked. “Well, she says you stole from her.” 12
Staying Out Of Obligation Dear Koren, When my girlfriend and I met, she was not immediately responsive to me and I took it as her being hard to get so I enjoyed the chase. Eventually, she relented and we have been together for nearly two years, but she has never changed. She is still not passionate and I really tried to maintain the interest but now I want to leave. Because she had told me of a previous sexual assault, I feel guilty walking away but the relationship has no spark at all. Dear writer, I can imagine that if your girlfriend is a survivor of a sexual assault, that could have the potential to change her attitude towards relationships and members of the opposite sex. Many women I have counseled have shared that this really affects them for a long time afterward. Maybe it took her quite a while to trust men again and her reluctance when you pursued her wasn’t playing hard to get, but her wondering, “can I do this?” For all we know, this relationship saved her from feeling hopeless and made her feel desirable in a good way, instead of feeling damaged as survivors of assault often do. Now after two years, she is not displaying the personality or behaviour that you expect from a girlfriend. I am truly sorry that your expectations are not being met, because you deserve to be happy and have the kind of relationship you desire. The thing is, I can’t really blame her for this: she demonstrated who she was
13
from the beginning, and you went into the relationship hoping for something different. Change does happen sometimes in relationships, but it is not guaranteed. One thing I also need to point out to you is that relationships are not always about passion. Those high feelings of giddy excitement are not always going to be there, or we may begin a relationship with them and see them fade over time. Love can be the steady, comforting knowledge that you love the person and she loves you back, and that you will be there for each other no matter what. Perhaps you can encourage her to get counseling if you think she has not fully healed from her attack. If you do suggest this, it should be because it’s in her best interest, and not for your selfish good. You can also share with her how you are feeling. Explain that you would like to feel that she is enthusiastic about being with you. Maybe she is not aware of how she is coming across. It would be fair to give her a chance to say if she wants to try, rather than you just up and leaving her. If she cannot or doesn’t want to commit to doing anything differently, and if you can’t find enough positive things in the relationship make you want to stick around, then you might just have to part ways. If it comes to that, I ask that you to be as kind and gentle as you can with this bruised soul. How you end the relationship could go a long way in preserving her self-esteem. BVI seeking more CAC Games gold Track and field athletes will be looking to add to the territory’s gold medal rush that began in 2002, when competition begins in the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia on Sunday. It took the BVI 20 years in the CAC Games before winning its first gold in El Salvador in 2002, when Dion Crabbe ran the 100m dash. In 2006, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott claimed the 100m gold medal in Cartagena, Colombia and repeated four years later in 2010, during the games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. In Veracruz, Mexico in 2014, Chantel Malone earned the territory’s fourth successive gold medal, when she cut the sand with the best Long Jump of the competition. From Sunday, 13 athletes will begin the quest for golden glory, seeking to extend the territory’s golden run, with six of them being ranked in the Top 10 among their CAC counterparts. Five of the 13 will be making their games debut. Ranked No. 5 in the Hammer Throw with her 60.97m (200’0½’) mark from the Commonwealth Games, Tynelle Gumbs will get the ball rolling on Sunday afternoon. Long Jump defending champion Malone, ranked No. 6 with a 6.48m (21’3”) measurement, will begin her repeat quest on Monday afternoon and will be joined in the pit by debutant Kala Penn, who is ranked at No. 16 with 6.01m (19’8½”). Also in action in the preliminary rounds of the 400m hurdles will be Kyron McMaster, curLimin’Times Entertainment Gude
rently ranked No. 3 in the world in the event and No. 1 in the CAC. The finals are slated for Tuesday. Sunday’s action will continue with sprinter Shaquoy Stephens, whose 10.52 seconds time places her in the No. 10 rank for the 100m. Harrigan-Scott, in her fourth and final CAC Games, will tackle her pet event the 100m, in which she has the 12th best time this season of 11.63. Eldred Henry, ranked No. 4 in the Shot Put with his season’s best of 19.56m (64’2”), will see action on Monday, as will Ashley Kelly, whose 53.00 seconds time is No. 7 in the 400m. Ronique Todman and Adriano Gumbs will also make their games debut with the 400m, with times of 48.37 and 47.54 seconds respectively. Deya Erickson will compete in the first games of her career in the 100m Hurdles, after breaking the 14.00 seconds barrier for the first time with 13.98. Erickson—who was only able to begin jogging in October after a severe April 2016 knee injury—has made a remarkable comeback. No. 8 ranked Trevia Gumbs will take to the Shot Put circle on Tuesday, with her 15.38 (50’5½”) national record in the bag, while twin sister Tynelle at No. 12, will get in the Discus Throw ring, with a 48.50m (149’1½”) season’s best, seeking to get the 50m barrier. Akeem Bradshaw, the final debutant, will swing into action on Wednesday in the Long Jump, ranked No. 17, with a 7.44m (24’5”) mark. 14
