Roundup Golden Jubilee Pageantry This weekend brings two chances to see some of the best talent and grace that Virgin Gorda has to offer on stage at two popular pageant shows. First, on Saturday, 8th at the Catholic Community Center, it’s the Miss Gorgeous Show. The theme for this year is Glitz & Glamour, and the show will see three contestants, Shamekah Smith, Saungie Liburd and Tesan Guznzelle, vying for the crown. Miss Gorgeous is typically an adult show, with contestants competing in introduction, question and answer, talent, evening wear, and lingerie segments. Unlike some other pageants, competitors may be married or mothers, so you can bet these ladies are “grown and sexy.” You can get tickets for Miss Gorgeous in advance for $25 at Speedy’s or at Rosy’s Supermarket; or get them at the door for $30. There’s also a VIP ticket option for $50.

Then on Sunday, 9th, also at the VG Catholic Community Center, is the Prince & Princess Show. This kiddie show is sure to be a sweet treat with this year’s theme: Candy Land. Four primary schoolers will showcase their best in introduction, talent, creative wear, and formal wear segments. The contestants are Hayden Nickie, Kamia Bascombe, Carlos Martinez and James Smith Jr. The Prince & Princess Show starts at the more family friendly hour of 6pm. Tickets for this show cost $10 for kids and $15 for adults, and you can get them at Speedy’s, Rosy’s, or at Buck’s Wholesale. And don’t forget to support all the pageant winners when they join other festival royalty during the Grand Easter Parade on Easter Monday, April 17.

Back in the day fashion also still in style. When they dressed, ladies would put on their makeup and good shoes when coming into town. If traveling via sea they would wait until they were approaching land to take the papers out of their hair and arrange their curls. The iconic bell bottoms weren’t in until the late seventies and early eighties, and were worn by both men and women. Speaking of men, apart from bell-bottoms they also wore gun mouth pants. As explained by my grandfather, gun mouth pants were fitted to the bottom and slack on the top. Sounds like another current fashion, check out your joggers and see if they don’t resemble that description. Men who were coming into town to sell their catch or crops had casual selling clothes, but when they came into town for other business they were casket sharp in suits with suspenders, a hat and a cane to complete their outfit. A majority of the looks mentioned in this article are not that old, have made a come-back, or just never went out of style. So far we’ve had the bell-bottoms, ladies are still wearing their bangs, French curls, braids and ponytails. The men still dress casket sharp with suspenders for special occasions or certain events. What’s your style? Share them with us on our Limin Times Facebook page.

The idea for this article came about from a conversation with an elder wise lady whom I admire a lot. Imagine living in a time where fashion was not such a big deal as it is in today’s modern world and living to see how it has evolved decades later. But did it change that much, or has it only been revamped? Back in the forties and fifties, the fashion was for women to wear their hair in French roll curls. At times they would iron their hair straight using a hot comb, which was heated on the fire. Of course you had to be careful that you so you wouldn’t burn your hair or yourself. It was also popular to have a very fine curl, paper curls, which was done with brown paper. You had to start at the end and roll the paper up with your hair included. Paigeboy, bangs, ponytails and braided hair were also popular hairstyles back then. In the sixties and seventies, women wore what you called peddle pushers, can- can dresses, lace and dresses with cape – wait aren’t capes the going fashion today? I’m also pretty sure that most dresses in today’s times also have a touch of lace added to the design or is made of lace. Yes, we are in this era of fashion again. Hair was done in a style they called fowl botty, funny name I know I couldn’t contain myself when she said that. French rolls and paper curls were Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

McMaster’s historic run to Worlds By Last week Kyron McMaster became the territory’s first athlete to qualify for all three levels of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships events. In his first race over the barriers since winning IAAF World Jr. Championships 400m Hurdles bronze medal in Poland last July, McMaster met his goal of qualifying for the August 4-13, IAAF Sr. World Championships in London. The lanky hurdler, who only took up the event in 2014, qualified for the IAAF World Youth Championships that same year. In his season debut last Thursday, McMaster won the event at the Florida Gator Relays, with a time of 48.71 seconds to improve the 49.56 seconds national record he established last summer. McMaster’s time is also an OECS record and, as of Tuesday, was the No 2 time in the world this season. “Going into the race, it was a season opener and I still wanted to qualify for World Champs because I know training has been going well,” said McMaster, who became the BVI’s first athlete punching a ticket to London. “At the starting line, I felt a lot of pressure coming down on myself and at that moment, I just calmed my body down and just said to myself, ‘Kyron, once you execute your race, you should prevail,’ because I’ve been training very good and that’s all I’d been focusing on, qualifying for World Champs.” McMaster, who signed with the Florida Gators Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

in November and will attend school beginning in August, said seeing the time at that moment didn’t surprise him, but in a sense it did. He said in training, he had been on point to run that exact time. “Coming here, Coachie (Dag Samuels) told me ‘if under the right circumstances, you’re mentally focused and everything, you should run 48.8 seconds’ and I ran 48.71, so that showed I’m mentally ready for whatever is coming up.” After winning last year’s Jr. College Indoor Championships 400m, McMaster, who joined St. Croix’s Allison Peter as the only Virgin Islands athletes to qualify for IAAF Word Youth, IAAF World Jr. and IAAF World Sr. Championships, was dropped by Central Arizona, when he got hurt and was unable to perform outdoors. Coming off that, he said he has been motivated. “It’s just a passion for me so everything that I want, I have to go and get in one way or the other,” he explained. “I’ve met my World Championships qualifying goal so my next focus is training and getting to the level where I would be able to go to the next round at World Championships.” McMaster’s performance is remarkable because he did not begin to specialize until 2014. The common trend has been coaches making athletes specialists at an early age, many have qualified for IAAF World Youth & Jr. Championships, but flame out. Perhaps now, some will look at McMaster’s development and reexamine their strategies, which hasn’t produced the desired results. 10
