It happens just about every July and August: the return of the jellyfish to the waters of the BVI. As some readers may already know, some jellies can give a painful sting to swimmers, and some of these have recently taken up residence in the waters around both Norman Island and The Baths. This is why if you’ve visited those beaches or checked out the Conservation and Fisheries Department’s warnings, you’ve seen purple flags. This is the color for dangerous sea life. There are tons of old wives tales about the best way to treat a jellyfish sting. I’ve heard for years that you should urinate on a sting, but some people would advise rinsing with seawater, scraping out individual stingers, coating the affected area with meat tenderizer or rinsing with rubbing alcohol. As it turns out, according to the Mayo Clinic, none of those actions really help! The best way to treat stings, rather, is a three step process. First, rinse the area with vinegar. Next, use tweezers to carefully pull out any tentacles. Finally, soak the area in hot water for 20-45 minutes. Just remember the water shouldn’t be scalding, just 110F (43C) will do the trick. For some people, jellyfish stings will trigger an allergic type reaction. Those folks should be watched closely as an antihistamine Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

could fix them up, but if the reaction is very severe, they could go into anaphylactic shock. Although the exact type of jelly currently hanging around at Norman Island and The Baths hasn’t been confirmed, the territory regularly sees sea wasps that are related but not quite so dangerous as the Australian box jelly. The name comes from the shape when viewed from above, which is cube-ish. Of course, not all jellyfish are dangerous. The round ones with four purple rings in the center known as moon jellies are often also seen locally in the summer months. Although they do have stinging cells which can irritate some sensitive persons, I’ve never had a problem with them and like to carry them back out to sea if I see them washed ashore. Like many others, I was initially afraid when I first encountered moon jellies as a high school student volunteer at a sea aquarium. Lab professionals dunked their arms into bucketfuls of moon jellies there, and encouraged me to do the same. After seeing that the action caused no discomfort to the adults around me, I went for it. I learned a lot in my few weeks there, but by far the best part is being able to say that I’ve been up to my elbows in moon jellies!

Space Opera

I love The Hitchhiker’s Guide a newcomer to the competition, to the Galaxy! the quality of the music will be Okay, now that I have the attention of all the science fiction nerds, this week we’re taking a break from talking about movies so I can share a wonderful book with you. Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente is the heiress book to the crown of the Hitchhiker’s Guide. It has a similar dark and hilarious sense of humor about humanity – and whatever the alien equivalent of humanity might be – plus it’s whip-smart and beautifully written. Space opera is the (often disparaging) term that describes a story that takes place in outer space but has a simplistic or melodramatic storyline focused on epic battles between worlds. In this case, however, it’s literally a musical in space. Since the opera in question is actually more of an interplanetary music competition, perhaps it might be more accurate to call it The Voice in space, or maybe Earth’s Got Talent. There is a healthy dose of drama in the story. For starters, the stakes are incredibly high. Each competing planet has to create an original piece of music to satisfy all the other competing planets. In the case of Earth, as 11

used to decide whether humans are fully sentient beings, and, if the Earth song doesn’t pass muster, the interplanetary community will judge Earth mostly harmless and destroy it. Although the various governments of Earth are eager to lay claim on the right to chose the song that will represent humanity, competition organizers have already compiled a shortlist of likely songmakers. After discovering that almost everyone on that list has either died or was fictional, one-hit-wonder Decibel Jones and the Absolute Zeros – or rather, the remaining members of the band, are scooped up and transported to space. There, Decibel and Oort St. Ultraviolet, who haven’t spoken much less made music together, since their bandmate Mira Wonderful Star died, meet other competing species, reminisce about their career as glam-rock weirdoes, hear the different philosophies on what it means to be truly sentient, and evade various attempts to sabotage their performance. Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 7: Removing A Mask

Bella I was sitting in my home office working on a design when I my phone rang. I wanted to ignore it because I needed to concentrate, but at that late hour it was probably an emergency so I answered. “Is this Bella Frederic?” the person on the other end asked. “Yes,” I replied. “This is Nurse Jeffers from All Saints Hospital, your friend Jazz Burns has been admitted and you’re listed as her emergency contact.” I knew she wouldn’t tell me anything else important over the phone so I told her I would be there shortly. I saved my work and dressed fast enough to make your head spin, and as for my drive over – let’s just say it was a miracle I didn’t end up in the hospital next to Jazz. After Jazz’s Dad died, she asked if she could put me down as her emergency contact since all her family lived out of state. I told her that it was no problem. My rush carried me through to the checkin desk and being directed to the right room by hospital staff, but when I walked into Jazz’s room and I had to pause. My normally vibrant friend was immobilized by IV cords. She opened her eyes and saw me. “Hey girl, you look like you seen a ghost. I walked over to her and squeezed her hand, then helped her slide over so I could lie next to her. “Why are you in here?” I asked. She was quiet for a while then she said, “stress.” I was lying there in disbelief as Jazz filed me in. She told me about her affairs with Kevin and James, and how she got pregnant and didn’t know who the father was. She had told both men that she was pregnant. Kevin didn’t want anything to do with the baby or, now that she was pregnant, with her. James said he didn’t want to see a child suffer, but he didn’t want to be a father either. He said he’d give her what she needs to support the baby if it’s his. It made no sense to me. After pondering it for a minute, I figured James didn’t want to do the duties of a father, but he also didn’t want to be a deadbeat. Jazz told me that it took her so long to decide whether to keep the baby that she had even made an appointment to have an abortion, but she didn’t go. Now, after five months of stressing and the absence of any help from Kevin or James, she miscarried. After that earful, the only thing I could do was hold my friend’s hand and be there with her. I didn’t know what to say but I’m sure she appreciated me being there. 12

Are We Compatible? Dear Koren, I’m dating a 34-year-old man who is good at his job but he hardly reads any books, whereas I keep abreast of current events, etc. He has a way of correcting what I say to the point that I just don’t say certain things because I already know how he will react. Communication is important to me, but half our communication consists of him trying to prove he is right or me wondering whether to say certain things because he might not know it. Does that mean we are not compatible? – Wondering Dear wondering, Communication is an important part of a relationship and you are right to observe and question these communication patterns. What you and your partner say to each other, what you deliberately withhold, your views of each other’s abilities and your attitude toward each other all affect the quality of the relationship you share. Even if your partner is good at his job and knowledgeable in that area, it would be useful to him to know other things outside his field. He doesn’t have to be a walking Google assistant, but he should at least be aware of what is going on in a few other areas. If he does not know something on a topic that you raise, he should feel comfortable saying he’s not familiar with what you are talking about, rather than try to prove he knows more that he does. A desire to learn and a bit of humility can go a long way

in improving the communication process in this relationship. So what’s your part in this? Try to ensure that you are not coming across as a know-it-all without dumbing yourself down. If you are wellread and knowledgeable, it’s okay to talk about the information you gather, but not to highlight how much you know or how little he does. Nothing is more annoying than a partner who is constantly correcting the other like a school teacher rather than being an equal. There is a time and place for everything. If he is “correcting” you and you know you are right, thank him for his feedback and then offer to validate yourself. You can say for example, “I appreciate your input, but I really think Brazil is in south America and not Central America, so let’s check a map to be sure.” That way, you discover the results together. Yes, how you relate to each other verbally and non-verbally is am important part of your compatibility, but the beauty of communication is that it is a skill you can both improve. If you are both willing to truly listen to each other, to stand down sometimes, and be willing to learn, your communication together will improve. Pride has to take a backseat and you also need to send the message to your partner that you think he is a worthwhile member of the relationship and brings valuable skills to the table; this way, he won’t feel a need to prove his worth or outdo you. 13

Softball Pitchers’ Reunion There’s no BVI Softball Association national league this year, but, on the occasion of Bert “Big Man” Henley’s 65th birthday, several softball players attended a party including some pitchers of yesteryear. Henley, along with Elmo Connor, Elroy “Ellie” Henley and Walwyn “GM” Brewley, represented the high point of softball in the territory between the 1960s and 2000s. The 2014 BVI Softball Association league was named after Henley, who played in both the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. During his career, Henley played with the Invaders, Marlins, Atoms, Roots and Pirates on Tortola and in St. Thomas with the Rams and Vikings. Connor played with the Astros, Ellie with the Royals, and Brewley – a lefty – with the Tigers and Blue Wings before going on to scoring and statistics. Brewley eventually became the BVI Softball Association’s longest serving president and, in 1999, was inducted into the International Softball Federation Hall of Fame. He’s still the only BVI inductee to the group. “These fellows came to prominence in the 60s and played a long time through the 2000s,” Brewley noted. “All three of them represented the BVI on national teams during their respective careers.” Reflecting on his career, the Big Man—a man of very few words—never dwelled on the game, statistics nor victories. That was for the pundits. His focus was always on preparing for the next game or to strike out the next opponent. “I always loved softball,” he recalled while Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

reflecting on his 35-year career in the sport. “We played it in school. Then after school, we stopped on the playground to play softball again.” Before settling on the mound and rising to prominence as a revered hurler, Henley played both first base and as a catcher. “I got into pitching and I loved it,” he explained. “I was one of the guys who never dwelled on a victory, but to be truthful, after I did the job, I forgot about it.” However, he recalls pitching a no-hitter in St. Thomas and a perfect game in St. Croix with the Vikings against Mets. “There were a lot of guys on the team like Miguel Santos. They had a good team but at the time I was young and strong I felt like I could have blown it by anybody.” In one of his last playoff games, Henley fanned a record 18 batters in the BVI Softball league, where he won the strike out award in 1986, ’87, ’88, ’90, ’91 and ’92. He was the league’s MVP in ’88 and ’89. The Big Man had the lowest ERA in ’79, ’85, ’95 and his last coming in 1999. Perhaps his pitching dominance reached a crescendo in 1979. That season he was the St. Thomas league strikeout king and MVP with the Vikings, as well as the strike out leader with the Atoms in the BVI, and, as if that weren’t enough, he also had the having most victories in both leagues. In 1990, he grabbed the Gene Cerge Invitational best pitcher award. 14
