What are you going to get her? This is the likely question on many minds when this Sunday comes rolling around as persons in several countries around the world will be observing Mother’s Day. Traditionally observed on the second Sunday of May, the day was initially conceptualized to offer much needed, and more importantly, much deserved recognition to mothers and the institution of motherhood. The day of tribute was introduced at a time when women played a markedly different role in homes, the workforce and the wider society than they do today. It has since morphed into one of the more prominent global observances that has been commercialized to the hilt, with spending this year in the United States alone expected to surpass a whopping $20Bn on gifts, meals and other niceties in tribute to mothers. In the Virgin Islands, advertisers have plunged headfirst into the trend, promoting a bevy of attractions, including brunches, lunches, dinners, greeting cards and a host of gift ideas to bring smiles and tears of joy to the faces of “unsuspecting mothers”. Most mothers will be treated to an all inclusive full day off exempting them from usual houseLimin’Times Entertainment Guide

hold chores, babysitting and child rearing duties and will also likely be indulged a traditional breakfastin-bed. Many will also likely partake in offerings of thanks and prayers in churches throughout the territory. In the midst of all the hullabaloo though, we really shouldn’t forget that the essence and sentimental significance of the observance, is to salute the stellar efforts of mothers that far too often go unheralded and are unrewarded for the most part. One of the redeeming qualities of the observance is that it offers an opportunity for some reflection and also celebration of the time honored role of motherhood and its many accompanying challenges. Motherhood is a privilege that is not gifted to all women, so we really shouldn’t take for granted the role of women who have had the good fortune to bring life into the world and to shape those lives into responsible and upstanding citizens of our society. However, we choose to observe this year’s event, let us all be encouraged to make the most of the time we have with the mothers in our lives, whether they be biological or otherwise.

Cupcakes & Cocktails Chapter 1: Who are you
“Hi dolls!” Sarah exclaimed as she kissed each of her friends on the cheek before sitting down. “Sorry I’m late, I was talking to this really hot guy outside the mall and got side tracked,” she continued. “Trick, you went to the mall without us? How dare you heffa?” Bethany asked. Before she could get anything else out Sarah quickly explained that she only went to pick up an order that she had placed and was back out of there. “I swear you both are a case together,” Liz finally broke her silence. “Oh hush Liz, you’re no better than us,” said Bethany. Liz agreed and the ladies broke out in a laugh. The three friends, Sarah, Elizabeth (Liz) and Bethany (Beth), met as freshmen in college and became the perfect tropical blend because of their similar personalities. After college, Sarah went on to marry a wealthy man and because of her lifestyle she would often give off the vibe that she thought she was better than you. Liz however, can’t seem to get her shit together. She has a great job and nice home but the men in her life always seem to control her. She was lucky enough her current boyfriend let her meet with the girls, but it was only because he would be out for happy hour with his buddies. Bethany was the group gossiper. She talked everybody’s business including her own. The ladies have been meeting every last weekend of each month to shop and catch up with each other. They chose that time because any weight gain on Friday could be burned off Saturday morning during their intense workout routine. Each lady was into staying fit for their own reason. Sarah’s shallow menLimin’Times Entertainment Guide
tality forced her to stay slim. Beth worked out because she was always with someone’s man and she had to stay on top of her game and Liz was forced in the gym because of her controlling boyfriend that was all about looks. “So ladies, it’s agreed that after our gym sessions tomorrow we will meet for an afternoon movie and dinner?” Sarah asked. “Yes,” both Beth and Liz agreed. “Alright, see you ladies tomorrow, I’m about to take my tipsy behind home to somebody man,” Beth said as she stood to leave. “We will hear about you in the papers real soon,” Sarah told her. Beth turned to Liz and told her bye. ******* “Where do you think you are going looking like that? Matter of fact who said you can go anywhere?” Michael, Liz’s boyfriend, asked her. She was ready for her movie date with the girls and had just come downstairs to leave. “Out with my friends, and last time I checked I was a grown woman and this was my home and I don’t need to ask you permission to enter or leave it,” Liz told him. Liz was so busy putting on her shoes that she never noticed that Michael had got up and come in front of her. “You must be drunk from last night still, so I’m going to act like you didn’t just talk to me like that,” Michael continued, “since you want to act gangsta, I suggest you take your ass back upstairs change and join me on the couch because you’re not leaving this house.” Liz stood up and…. 12
Y’all know about the Notorious RBG, right? Ruth Bader Ginsberg, appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1993, is a she-ro of women’s rights and remains a force to be reckoned with on the court today at the age of 86. On the Basis of Sex dramatizes her entry as one of the first women at Harvard Law School and the complicated forces she had to balance as she sought to appease the traditionalists in her school and the legal professionals who sought to keep her out of the courtroom on the one hand, and the changing social and gender norms of the 1960s and 70s on the other. After finishing law school, RBG (Felicity Jones) is barred from working at any of the firms she wants to join, so instead she begins teaching the law. She watches as her students protest injustice and the Vietnam War, and even begins teaching a course about gender discrimination and the law. Of course, in those days, the law very explicitly did treat men and women differently. In one dramatic scene, RBG’s daughter Jane (Cailee Spaeny) tells her parents she has skipped school to attend a protest led by feminist activist Gloria Steinem. 13
RBG is stung when Jane tells her that sitting in a classroom talking about how the law treats women unfairly won’t change the world – “It’s a support group.” The scene functions as the game changer for both RBG and her husband, tax attorney Martin D. Ginsburg (Armie Hammer). When a case of a bachelor being denied a tax credit that would ordinarily be granted to a working woman who was also caring for an elderly relative materializes, the Ginsbergs realize that they can fight sex discrimination in the law and win more rights for women if they can get the courts to set a precedent with a case where a man is on the losing end of a discriminatory law. When the case goes to court, it’s the old boys from Harvard arguing against the Ginsbergs and their friends at the American Civil Liberties Union. The old boys argue, as many traditionalists did at the time, that the law had to treat women differently in order to protect them. As we know, the case was the first of many judicial victories for RGB, but the filmmakers wisely decide to end it with a lovely symbolic shot of RGB ascending the steps of the Supreme Court. Rugby Showdown A more physical and fitter Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby team, dominated their British Virgin Islands counterparts after turning a 7-0 halftime advantage into a 31-12 victory on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Grounds, in their North America Rugby matchup. It was the second group victory for TCI, who stopped the Dominican Republic 24-20 at home. The BVI will face D.R in their next encounter. Turks and Caicos dominated most of the game despite the 7-0 halftime score, before Gareth Butler scored on a try then converted, just as the break was being called. Kadis Simmons added a second try and Butler converted, improving the score to 14-0. Noel Maxwell put the BVI on the score sheet when he ploughed through the TIC defense, then Tim Parsons converted, making it 14-7. TCI would score three times more and Rory Thornton added a score for the BVI in the waning moments of the game for the 31-12 final score line. “I thought it was an evenly contested first half and we controlled the ball, but I certainly thought the BVI backs carried a threat the whole game,” TCI Coach Simon Taylor told Sports Beat. “I thought 7-0 was a reflection of the first half. Our strike runners Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
started making more of an impact in the second half—we had some big guys carrying up the middle—and the BVI players played their hearts out and did a lot of great tackles, but there were a few more gaps second half and opened up our ball and I thought I was a really good game.” BVI coach James Vaughan said he thinks his team played well in the first half but didn’t execute in the final third. “I think if we executed a little more, be a bit more clinical, we would have put more points up,” he said. “We had our own mistakes with two yellow cards that didn’t help us and scored out second try with a yellow card. We made too many silly mistakes. If we had 15 men on, I think the game would be slightly different.” Vaughan said they have to work on their structure and game plan a little bit more and hopefully next time they will get a W. He said they can play international Rugby but not with 13 against 15. “That killed us and fitness as well,” he noted. “We have to work on that a little bit more, but I think we played well together.” 14
