Finding Dory: A Fund Raising Screening This Friday, June 17th eCamp BVI invites the public to join in for a special screening of Finding Dory the Pixar films sequel to the hugely popular film, Finding Nemo. Once again Ellen DeGeneres, using her versatile voiceacting skills, plays the befuddled Dory, A Pacific Blue Tang, with an unfortunate memory condition which leaves her not knowing what it is she forgot a moment ago. When Dory, once comfortable with her adopted family, realizes with a sudden head flash, that she has a real mom and dad, she sets off in search of her roots. This puts her in precarious situations, where others have to come to the rescue. An added new character, is Hank, the Octopus (voiced by Ed O’Neil), who in his chameleon like forms enchants the viewers and adds to the story’s emotional pull. Pixar spokesmen are claiming this is the most complex animated character ever created and “Hank” may have a lasting legacy This endearing film will be a fund-raising event for eCamps British Virgin Islands, which began in 2012 as a way of allowing young people from 9 to 17 years a chance to experience things

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

outside their “cultural neighborhood” and to help them develop social skills and broaden their perspective to a larger world. Much of the emphasis of the camp is an understanding that travel offers a multi-faceted form of learning; which involves direct interaction with people of different backgrounds – exposure to art, music, food and most of all that education is not limited to classroom settings. Past exciting adventures have taken eCamper’s to global destinations such as the UK, France, Asia, Spain and this year’s trip involves a journey to Costa Rica from July 1st – 18th. Founder/Director, Portia Harrigan explained the focus is on building character, confidence and developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Each year six to eight spaces are reserved for under-privileged children, who would not have the means to afford the camp. The youth also rely on public fund-raisers, to help defer their costs. The screening time is 7:30pm at U.P’s Cineplex and tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children under 12 years. There will also be character face painting for children by eCampers with an artistic flair. Proceeds will go directly to the travel fund for the Costa Rica eCamp experience.

Hummus – A Key to Peace? There is a Chinese proverb that says, “Travel slow and close to the earth.” There is a certain wisdom to that, especially for traveling across continents and cultures, going slowly gives you a chance to integrate the differences you are experiencing, including the food. However in this age it’s more like “travel fast and in the air.” When you pop yourself in a sealed capsule with other people and skyrocket across time zones, even your body yells back, “Just a minute here!” Hopping from the Caribbean to the US is a certain culinary change – but the Middle East is another world entirely. I recently returned from Israel, a real melting pot of cultures from around the world. Jerusalem is considered a home to the three monotheistic religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but it is also a Mecca of hot and tantalizing Middle Eastern spices and flavors. The food is an amazing fusion of too many cultures to list, from Palestinian Arabs to both European Jews from Russia and the Slavic states to North African and Spanish Jews hailing from Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Iraq and Syria. Eating in Israel is a 24/7 pastime. In a café society with food stalls and open-air markets, and vendors on every corner, seeing nearly every pedestrian walking along with food or drink in hand is normal. Israelis also pride Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

6

themselves on knowing where to get the “best” food. One dish that both Arabs and Jews claim as their own is “hummus” a chickpea – sesame tahini spread that is eaten with pita bread. This year I decided to try one of the three, top “Hummusias” (Hummus Restaurant) for my own judgment. In Jaffa (Yaffo), an Arab-Jewish town and Israel’s oldest port, the well-known Abu Hassan family has a tiny restaurant on a corner hill lot and it is always packed. I got a table only because I joined an existing one filled with hungry customers, who were more concerned about the food than the company. The menu is quite simple – what variety of hummus would you like – traditional or with black beans? It is served with warm pita bread, a side plate of wedges of raw onion, radishes, pickles and “Harif ” a hot pepper sauce. After consuming this wonderful dish all I could say was, “Sababa” as they say in Israeli-Arabic slang – “excellent!” People joke, that if there could be a settled truce in the “Hummus wars” (whose is the best and where it originated) there would be peace in the Middle East. I put my vote for now on Abu Hassan, but that is only because I have not tried the other two top competitors in Israel. Maybe the key to peace will come over a plate of hummus – can you, “Imagine, ” as John Lennon wrote?

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

She thinks we are friends Ask Koren Dear Koren, I have a friend who is going through a rough time with her cheating husband and one night out of curiosity, I accompanied her and followed him and saw where he goes. Now I’m sorry for getting so involved. She is now coming to my place maybe twice a week to vent and she brings her 7 year old son who has no behavior and she does not discipline him when he touches everything and is always hungry and he disturbs my teenage son who is in the middle of exams and the last time she sent my son to buy food. I think I allowed this situation to get out of control and need to find a way to let her know we are not best friends and I don’t appreciate her showing up every time she is upset. How do I do that without hurting her feelings? -Fed up Dear Fed–up Friend, You amuse me. You were all into the action when it was following someone and making assumptions about what he was doing, but now that things have gotten real and the excitement is over, you want to pull out? Some friend you are, but you are within your rights. No one has a right to burden you with the sordid details of their distress, because her marriage to someone seems to be on the rocks. I mean, you didn’t tell her to choose him, so why should you care if he is visiting someone else at night, leaving her alone with their 7-year old son. Somebody needs to tell this “friend” that your home does not have a support group for sad wives. Expecting you to put down your chores

to listen to her twice a week is really a drain on you. Your son is old enough to sort himself out and doesn’t really need you that much, so why should you have to be bothered to prepare a meal for her child. Doesn’t she know that you are finished with the child care thing? Besides, if his little world is being disrupted because his father is hardly ever home, his mom often crying and when his parents are together, its just arguing and fighting, you cannot be held responsible for that. You really have allowed the situation to get out of control. From the beginning you should have told her that you and her have different views on friendship and she should find a counselor to pour her heart out to. While someone else might think of giving the boy a snack and a game to play with, you should have set better boundaries by asking her not to bring the bothersome troublemaker to your home. Its sweet of you to not want to hurt her feelings and I think it is in the best interest of you, your son, who was disturbed, and her son, that she is referred to someone who has the time and the energy, the interest and the patience to listen to and to help her. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 11

The Big Short Like a lot of people, I was mystified by the housing crisis of 2008. I didn’t understand the euphoria people had felt when they borrowed more than they could afford to buy a home (or several). The greed and duplicity of the bankers and mortgage companies seemed immoral and unfathomable. Who could possibly explain such insanity? Well, The Big Short does. Fast–paced and cynical, humorous and tragic, The Big Short takes us back to a few years prior to 2008, when the signs of a housing bubble were being ignored by everyone but a prescient few. In rapid-fire fashion, the movie introduces us to a motley crew of investors and hedge fund managers who see the signs written in the data they analyze, the hedge funds they are promoting and the bank loans that they are administering. They see what others refuse to see: the joy ride is about to end. Knowing that the dominoes are going to fall, the film’s key players (all based on real people) decide to “short” the market. Initially they do not know each other. There is Michael Burry (Christian Bale), an obsessive compulsive numbers guy, who by looking at the thousands of home mortgages falsely being sold as Triple A bonds, saw that they were unsustainable. The banks, he figured out, lent money to anybody – whether they had a job, the money for a deposit, or could afford their mortgage payments. Mark Baum (Steve Carell) is a man with a Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

conscience, but cannot convince anyone else that the housing market is going to collapse and take the dreams of thousands down with it. Out of frustration, he feels the only way to combat the stupidity is to also short the market. There are others as well. Jared Vanette (Ryan Gosling) is a cocky hedge fund guru who sees money in others’ misfortune. John Shipley (Finn Witrock) and Charlie Geller (John Magaro) are small time players hoping to make it big. No one takes them seriously until they enlist the help of the retired investor, Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt), and together prove everyone wrong. From time to time, a personality, like chef Anthony Bordain, will turn up to explain a tricky financial term like credit default swaps – educating viewers about a complicated and deceptive financial system in a captivating way. The characters in The Big Short are far from heroes. But maybe they aren’t villains. They’re not the ones who deceived buyers into taking out mortgages they couldn’t afford. Instead they made millions by taking advantage of a corrupt banking system that was going to collapse anyway. Clever and entertaining, The Big Short is less of a “feel good” movie, than an “I told you so,” one. 13

Christopher gets professional call Sitting on a $100,000 offer from the Major League Baseball Minnesota Twins, who drafted him in the 20th round as the 603rd player taken over the weekend, Shamoy Christopher has an interesting summer ahead. “I don’t know what I’m going to do yet, I still have all summer to decide,” said Christopher, a freshman at Roane State Community College in Tennessee. “I wanted more than that, knowing the Shamoy Christopher potential I have and what I’m capable of at this age. Right now, my decision is to go back to school and not take it until next year. I do appreciate the fact that they gave me the opportunity to sign this year, but I said no and I’ll take it next year. There’s no particular team I’m interested in. Hopefully, I’ll sign somewhere good and progress to the next level.” Christopher, 18, became just the third BVI player to be drafted by a Major League Baseball team—behind infielder Andre “Shabba” Pickering drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 1980s and Jeremey Penn, who the Los Angeles Angels wanted to sign as a free agent the day after he graduated from the Elmore Stoutt High School in 2007 for $40,000. He was drafted by the Phillies in the 50th round of the 2007 draft and in 2008, the San Francisco Giants drafted the right handed pitcher in the 37th round. Working out at the E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park on Monday afternoon, he recalled that it Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

was Terry “Chino” Chinnery who got him started as a four-year old, when he accompanied his mother who played softball with the Hawks, went to practice. “He pushed me to be a catcher because that’s where my potential was,” Christopher, a sports management major reflected. “I love catching. Nothing else better in the world than catching and playing baseball. It’s just my pride and passion since a kid. It’s been a grind—eat, sleep, play baseball and workout. That’s about it.” Christopher described it as a ‘huge transition’ going from the BVI with limited opportunities and games, to playing high school and college baseball in Tennessee. “Baseball in the states is definitely more competitive than it is down here and you get more opportunities to play,” he noted, coming from a place that doesn’t have a baseball field. “It’s pretty impressive how far I’ve gotten. I have been putting in the work since I was four. I had hopes and dreams (of playing professionally) because I feel like I had it.” Working with kids, Chinnery says he look to see where they could best make it to the next level. “I saw that he couldn’t run but had some abilities and the best thing for him was to catch,” Chinnery said. “So I worked with him and taught him how to switch hit. I took him to play in St. John and from there, he was picked up by a St. Thomas team to represent them, then eventually went off to the states to attend high school. So he has been playing ball a long time.”
