Many Cultures, One BVI performance at the party. Since the event began, it has attracted participation by residents from a wide variety of countries that have adopted the BVI as their home, including Jamaica, Nigeria, Grenada, England, St. Vincent, Dominica, the US and Canada. Each national organization sets up a booth so attendees can sample their food and drink and learn a bit about the country’s Christmas traditions. Be sure to stop by the Filipino Association of the BVI’s booth to check out a display of Christmas lanterns called parols. The star shaped paper or bamboo lanterns began as a practical lighting solution to guide Filipinos’ path to dawn christmas church services in the days before electricity was widely available. Today’s parols can be quite elaborate, incorporating electric lights or even moving parts. Association members will have six parols on display and are asking visitors to cast their vote for the best one on Saturday at the event.
Premier Dr. Orlando Smith is continuing the tradition started in 2013 of promoting unity in the BVI at Christmastime with a “Christmas Around the World” party on Saturday the 17th at 4 pm at the Central Administration Building. “We want to celebrate and showcase the cultural diversity represented in the BVI and share in Christmas traditions from around the world,” the premier said when the theme for this year’s celebration was announced. “I am looking forward to even greater participation this year and representation from even more cultures and nationalities.” As usual, representatives from different countries, including the BVI, will serve up food and holiday traditions that embody their culture. In addition to the usual music and dance presentations on stage, this year participating national organizations have also been invited to show off their culture’s traditional clothing in a children’s fashion show. A new singing group called the Premier’s Mass Choir will also make their debut

How Can I Help? One of my duties at Island Publishing is responding to the email messages that come for our sister publication, the BVI Welcome Guide. The notes are a fascinating cross-section of folks that are visiting the territory, thinking of visiting, or just want to know something about us. Some people are, I think, contacting us by mistake. The other day I had three messages in a row from a woman in a panic that she hadn’t received confirmation for two clients’ passage on a ferry from the USVI. I’m not sure how this travel agent wound up contacting us for that, but I didn’t mind helping her find an actual ferry company. Since I didn’t hear from her again, I assume she got everything worked out. Another time I had a message from a woman who was hoping for the address of the Tourist Board – she wanted to visit them in person while she was in town. After a brief explanation that she wouldn’t be able to just type in an address and get directions from her smartphone, I was able to describe their physical location island style: using landmarks that she was familiar with. Most recently was a message from a man Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
with some questions about some changes to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, which are the international guidelines for boating professionals, including sailors. He wrote asking for help getting in touch with the right people. Thankfully, even though I am clueless about the new STCW rules, I remembered that the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry is in charge of maritime safety conventions and was able to point the writer in the right direction. Of course, the vast majority of the messages are, you guessed it, spam. Some send poorly spelled notes offering to “provide content for this website,” (perhaps I could outsource my own writing duties? Probably shouldn’t!). Others offer to help “optimize” our site in some other way, but I’m convinced by reading that they have never been to our websites and are just casting a wide net by mass emailing every address they can find online. Aside from the spammers, I like knowing I can usually help these lost folks of the internet find whatever they’re looking for in the BVI. 6

Aaron “King JEDI” Parillon Aaron “King JEDI” Parillon is a hip–hop artist, songwriter, an educator by profession and a proud father. He has been rapping since he was in high school and became a recording artist in 2007. He comes from musical parents. Both are singers who exposed their son to many genres of music, all of which influenced his development as an artist. The name “King JEDI” came about because he considers himself a king, being a man of royalty due to his African descent, and because he aspires to embody the legendary warriors gifted with untapped potential and wisdom that JEDIs are. His musical influences are persons who left a bookmark in music history pages whether dead or alive, and include Tupac, Culture, Bob Marley, Nick Friday, Raul “Jougo” Sprave, Teddy Pendergrass and Al Green just to name a few. To date King JEDI has released two albums, The Big Show and G.L.N.G. Makin Of A Legend, which produced singles such as Home Sweet Home, Making of A Legend, and Man In Da Trunk. He is currently working on his third album titled This Involves Mixed Emotions. Featured on the album are the pre-released singles “Hit Love,” “That Vibe” and “Freedom.” When we meet up with King JEDI, he told us the behind two of the singles. He described “That Vibe” as being rooted in a past romance. “‘That Vibe’ came about from true emotions and admiration I had/have for a woman,” he said. “It was one of my most honest thoughts. It was Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
real tough to put on but I wanted it done as I viewed her as very mature, and maybe too mature for me,” said Aaron. “Freedom,” on the other hand, is more about how he is judged by others. “Freedom speaks of the global stereotypes of an honest young black male who accepts the fact he doesn’t fit in with certain sociable crowds. I presented the song in a manner where it creates discussions around who’s for or against what I stand for,” he explained. When asked what it’s like being an entertainer in the BVI, he said it’s not easy. “It’s hard working for the most part and accepting the nature of our culture but it has changed a bit due to the diverse ethnicities we’ve inherited,” he said. When the spotlight goes off King JEDI is just Aaron, who loves to hang out in the same Sea Cows Bay neighborhood in which he grew up, vibing with his people, or at the sports bar having a drink and feasting on some hot wings. He also loves spending time with his family, especially his children. King JEDI’s future plans are to continue to be a voice for the Virgin Islands’ next generation, to be as successful as he can, and to follow no rules when it comes to his music. He really wants to drop an album that touches people’s emotions. You can purchase G.L.N.G. Making Of A Legend on iTunes and keep in touch with King JEDI via his website www.kingjedivi.com. You can also listen to his work on his Soundcloud page/King JEDI. 8

Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burton’s 1993 The Nightmare Before Christmas has been a tradition for me since the days of VHS tapes. Something about Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, trying to understand the warmth and cheer of Christmas really puts me in the holiday spirit. If you’re not familiar with the stop-motion musical, it’s a spooky twist on the classic “how are we going to save Christmas?” story. It opens with Jack sharing that he’s tired of Halloween. He makes it creepier every year for the ghouls, witches and vampires of Halloween Town, and he’s their hero, but for him, the tradition has become a dull routine. Then Jack stumbles through a magical door into Christmas Town. Instead of the shadowy trees and ghoulish gray houses, this town is quaint and cute. (Remember the 1964 TV movie Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Christmas Town looks just like it.) Jack delights in the lights, toys, snow and in the town’s hero, who Jack understands to be named “Sandy Claws.” The rest of the movie sees Jack returning home and trying to recreate Christmas with the help of the Halloween Town citizens. Being built for spookier stuff, Jack and company naturally get it very wrong. They expect stockings to contain severed feet, give gifts of dead animals instead of toys, make skeleton reindeer, and prepare a coffin instead of a sleigh. The voice of reason in Halloween Town is Sally, a rag doll brought to life by the town’s own Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
Dr. Frankenstein. She tries hard to convince Jack that things will go wrong if he tries to make his own Christmas, but, swept up in the novelty of it all, Jack refuses to listen. Instead, he insists that he just needs to meet the real “Sandy Claws,” to get it right. Jack dispatches three little ghouls to bring Santa from Christmas Town and they do. When the pair meet in person, Santa is clearly upset, but Jack pays no attention. He offers Santa a “vacation,” and heads off on his coffin-sleigh to deliver scorpions and decapitated dolls to the horrified residents of Christmas Town. Meanwhile, the little ghouls turn Santa over to the Boogie Man, who is all-too-happy for a chance to gobble up old St. Nick. Can Sally save Santa and make Jack see reason? Watch to find out! You can stream The Nightmare Before Christmas from Amazon or the iTunes store.

Traits of Great Relationships Most of us have a couple that we know whose relationship we just love: the way they finish each other’s sentences, they way they look at each other, how they operate cooperatively at home and how they just seem to just be so settled and joyful amidst the troubles of this world. What are some of the practices that help a relationship get to this point? What do these couples do to create such a strong bond? I’ve identified 10 things these relationships all seem to share. Here are the first five. 1. They put in the work. The couple you admire have had their growing pains and went through their valley experiences before they got to the top of the mountain. A great relationship requires both parties to be patient with each other and not throw in the towel at the first sign of conflict. Both persons must give 100 percent. 2. They know how to settle conflicts. Disagreements can come so fast, it makes your head spin; just as you are getting over one, something else pops up. You are different persons with different upbringing and different views, so it’s normal to disagree, but knowing how to disagree and still respect each other and appreciate your differences is a skill you can learn. 3. They communicate properly. A relationship should be a safe place where both partners feel listened to, supported and free to express their thoughts without feeling like they have to walk on eggshells. Sharing can build a strong connection and should be done often, not just about work or the news, but share your feelings, hopes and desires and listen and validate your Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
partner’s perspective. 4. They don’t try to change each other. It’s easier to point out another person’s faults rather than look in the mirror to identify your own. If you can’t accept the person as is, walk away rather than try to mold them into who you think they should be. People only change if they are motivated to, not on command and it’s not fair for you to come along, take somebody and try to turn them into someone else. 5. They give each other space. While spending time together is important, it is essential that both parties be able to enjoy activities apart sometimes. Neediness is not attractive and if someone tries to prohibit you from doing things without them, that is a sign of trouble. A relationship is not about control, it’s about understanding that two different individuals have separate needs.
