Open Mic Got a verse in your heart that’s yearning to come out? It’s the third Saturday of the month which means it’s time for the Mellow Moods Café Open Mic, the perfect place to share your work, try out a new thing, or just enjoy a supportive artistic atmosphere. This time around, freestyle poet Giovanni Herbert, whose work appeared in the anthology “Where I See the Sun: Contemporary Poetry in the Virgin Islands,” will be the featured poet, but as the name implies, the event welcomes all comers. A far cry from the competitive “slams” that are popular in some big cities, the Mellow Moods monthly events are known
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

for a welcoming, positive vibe. Although poetry is the highlight, at any given event you might also hear acoustic or a capella songs or even a dramatic reading or two given by folks from all walks of life. The variety of performers alone is worth the trip. Past artists have included everyone from veteran local poets to recent arrivals, and from established folks with multiple publications to up-and-coming lyricists and young students. If it seems like a vague description, that’s because no two open mic events are really alike, and you have to be there in person to truly understand what it’s all about. Be at Mellow Moods at 7pm this Saturday the 21st to experience it for yourself. Published by Island Publishing Services. Printed by Caribbean Printing Company Limited, P.O. I think island life might be spoiling my son, not in the sense that as parents we allow him to do whatever he likes, but just that there are so many things he as an island baby doesn’t need to be bothered with. Take shoes. Now that he is getting close to a year, the baby loves to cruise around, one hand on whatever low-lying piece of stability he can find (be it cabinets, furniture, or me) and both feet on the ground. It’s not quite walking but he’s getting there. And yet. I don’t feel the need to put him in shoes. The child has a few pairs, just in case, but he’s only worn shoes a handful of times in his life and I’m pretty sure the time when shoe-wearing become mandatory is still many months away. I have one friend who advised me that even pants are optional for him, although taking him out in public wearing just a diaper and a shirt still feels somehow wrong to me. Another thing the baby doesn’t have to worry too much over is shopping. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Bless the wonderful community of island moms who have taken such good care of their kids’ clothes so that now my little one get to wear them. Based on the fashion, I’d say many of the things my son wears are quite a few years older than he is, and that he is most likely not the second or even third child to make use of them. (And I can take a hint! I have a bag in the closet where clothes that he’s outgrown get stashed. When it’s full, on to the next mom they go.) I also suspect the baby won’t have to worry too much about a lack of stimulation. It seems wherever we go, even if we are just waiting around, there are animals and people and trees for him to watch for entertainment. You might have the coolest, hippest baby toy in your hand but if my kid sees a rooster, you and your toy will suddenly be invisible to him. I’m sure like so much in a kid’s life, all of this could change in an instant, but for now, he seems very content to be an island baby.

BOOK REVIEW
By Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel
The Wedding Date Don’t front fellow bookworms: if you like books, you have enjoyed at least a couple of romance novels here and there. With so much seriousness in the news lately, I went in search of a funny romance and my library app recommended The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory. It’s sexy and heartwarming at the same time and I highly recommend it. The couple at the center of this book has the cutest meet-cute imaginable: they get stuck in a hotel elevator together. In a ploy to get Alexa to share the snacks she’s carrying, Drew confides that he needs the extra sustenance to get him through what is about to be a very awkward weekend indeed: he is in town attending the wedding of his ex-girlfriend. Alexa feels sorry for him, but not quite sorry enough to share the fancy cheese and crackers she’s brought to celebrate her sister’s promotion. Come to find out, Drew is in the wedding party because his ex is marrying one of his best buddies from the medical school where all three met. Ouch, Alexa thinks, but still doesn’t feel moved to share. Then Drew shares the worst of it: he RSVP’d for himself “plus 1” in the hopes of deflecting some of the awkwardness, but the friend he’d planned to bring as his date had to cancel at the last minute. Between the pitiful story and her attraction to Drew, Alexa relents and shares her cheese and some laughs with Drew. By the time the elevator gets working again, the two are joking like they’ve known each other for years and are about 11
to part ways when Drew summons the courage to ask Alexa if she will be his date to the wedding. More out of surprise than anything, the normally reserved Alexa agrees, even though she expects the awkwardness of the wedding will simply be transferred from Drew and onto herself. To both their surprise, attending the wedding together as fake boyfriend and girlfriend is fun experience. They wind up spending the entire weekend together, and, on a whim, the following weekend as well. Their fake romance turns into real like, then lust, then… they’re not sure how to proceed. Alexa lives in Berkley, where she has a demanding job in the mayor’s office, while Drew is a pediatric surgeon in Los Angeles. More of a hurdle for these two is the fact that both of them have been so wrapped up in their careers in recent years that they have no concept of how to be in a serious relationship. The misunderstandings they have as a couple read as totally believable, as do their conversations about race (Alexa is black, Drew is white), and food (the author name checks several popular California eateries). I also love the side relationships in this book: Alexa and Drew both rely on friends and family to help them navigate the budding relationship, and ultimately, to help them figure out how they will make it work in the long term. Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 8: Her Turn in the Spotlight
Bella It’s been a month since Jazz lost her baby and, to be honest, she looks relieved to not be pregnant. I mean, who would want to raise a kid on their own with an absent father or one who only will come around on holidays or special occasions? God knows best. I was standing in my kitchen waiting to take our dinner out of the oven. Pierre had a long day in court and I wanted him to come home to a nice meal. He has been busy lately with a big case and we are in need of some quality time. I don’t know if what happened to Jazz put me in my feelings but for some reason I’m starting to accept the fact that I could really be in love with Pierre. I looked forward to our time together ¬– when we are not up to our necks with work. I was just setting the table when I heard a sexy voice said “hey love.” I couldn’t help but smile to myself at the sound of his voice, my man was home. I walked over to him and hug and kissed him inviting him to sit for dinner. As we ate he filled me in on the final stages of his case, making me swear to keep what he told me a secret. I also filled him in on my recent projects and what I planned to design next. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

Once we finished, Pierre went upstairs and I tackled the kitchen. While he was in the shower, I got the urge to throw up, so I ran into the guest washroom downstairs and let it all out. I hoped it wasn’t food poisoning; we had made plans to do a movie night this weekend and I didn’t want to miss it. As I rested in the living room with my head back trying to catch myself Pierre quietly came down. “Are you okay sweetheart?” he asked. “Yes love, at least for now” I replied. “What happen while I was in the shower?” he asked. When I told him I had vomited, the look of worry on his face shifted into a goofy smile. Was he laughing at my pain? I was about to let him have it when he shouted, “We’re pregnant!” I watched him in disbelief. “That can’t be true,” I told him. “I take the birth control shots, remember?” “Those things don’t always work,” he said, clearly thrilled. “Plus, you’ve been having those super vivid dreams, and I’ve never known you to be sick! I just know we are pregnant.” He must be mad, and what’s worse, now I’m going to have to tell him that I can’t have kids. When he finds out why, he’ll never forgive me.
Overcoming A Big Mistake Dear Koren, I did something bad a few years ago. It cost me my job and my reputation – I lost the respect of a few friends and some family. Right now, I don’t even like myself. I never got back a job as good as what I had. I never talked about the situation, but it’s like a cloud hanging over me. I want to get past it and get to the point where I can look at myself in the mirror again. I know you might not understand much from my email but what I’m actually asking is this: How do I move past a bad mistake and get my family to trust me, even if I never get to the point of liking myself again? – Reader Dear reader, There are a million stories out there in books, movies and songs about people who have made mistakes or done things they were not proud of, but with some effort and support, they went on to have happy, fulfilled lives. Your desire to change your story and take back some control over your life is a good one and it’s very possible. Here are my suggestions to get you on track: • Come clean. Talk to your closest family members and friends and clear the air about what happened. It might be embarrassing, but it will ease some of the emotional burden you’ve been carrying around. Give them time and eventually, your family and friends will realize that the best parts of you are still there. Once you prove yourself, the trust can be rebuilt.
• Make amends where possible. In addition to an apology, if you can right some of the wrongs that came about as a result of this “bad thing,” then do that. It will be of benefit to the wronged party and also to you. • Forgive yourself. Place your mistake in the category of something you did but don’t let it define who you are. No human being is perfect; we all slip and fall sometimes, but don’t stay down. You are a worthwhile human being. Sure, you did something wrong, but you can do so much more that is right. • Move in the right direction. Now is the time to start thinking of what choices you can make to move in a more positive direction. Work towards getting a job that you love. Whatever the circumstances were that drove you to that past action that, stay away from the people, places or things that could lead you back to that. • Never lose hope. Whatever you do, never ever give up on yourself and never lose hope in your own resilience. Whenever someone reminds you of your past, remind yourself of your present, your potential and your possibilities. As you move forward, you may meet those who will want to remind you of your mistakes, but there will be others who will support you every step of the way. In all likelihood, you will be your own biggest critic. Don’t listen to the negative self-talk. You don’t have to be a prisoner of your past; instead, you can use the past to fuel your fire for success. Know that one day, you will be where you want to be and maybe even inspire someone with a similar struggle. 13

Another First For Brathwaite Sprinter Rikkoi Brathwaite closed his U20 Boys track and field career with another first in Tampere, Finland, during the IAAF World U20 Championships on Thursday. Brathwaite, the territory’s first male sprinter to automatically qualify in both the 100 and 200m championships, also became the first advancing to the semifinals in both events. His fourth place finish in 10.44 seconds in the 100m, saw him advancing to the semis as an automatic qualifier. He matched the same time and place in the semis, with the 11th best mark of the 24 qualifiers, 19 of whom completed the event. “In the prelims, I was a bit more relaxed in the race and felt executing my race in the drive phase was good. I stood up and turned over,” Brathwaite analyzed after the semifinal. “After the semifinal, we reviewed the race and what me and my coaches think, was that I concentrated a little too much on executing power, more than turning over. The difference between the two races was that I was a bit more tense in the semifinals than in the prelims.” In the 200m that followed, Brathwaite advanced to the semis with a time of 21.22 seconds, before later being disqualified for stepping on the line on the curve. The only other BVI male athlete to advance beyond the semis in any event in the competition since 1986 when Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
the territory made its debut was Kyron McMaster, who won 400m Hurdles bronze in 2016. In April, Brathwaite added to his burgeoning athletic prowess when he became the territory’s first Carifta Games finalist and medalist in the U20 Boys 100m. He earned bronze in the competition that the BVI first entered in 1976. He is also the only BVI athlete to achieve not one but two U18 Boys 100m finalist slots. “I like to travel,” he said when asked what he liked about track and field before heading to Finland. “You get to go to new places and experience different types of people, competition and you get to pick up different skills. You learn how to keep your nerves under control. In track and field, it never stops being fun.” When asked about his most memorable moment in track and field thus far in his career, Brathwaite, an Indiana red shirt freshman, took a deep retrospective sigh. “Believe it or not, my most memorable moment was when I won division champion in the Leeward Islands Youth Championships,” said Brathwaite who now holds both 100 and 200m National Jr. Records, with times of 10.43 and 21.21 seconds. “Of course I won the first medal for the BVI at the Carifta Games in the 100m. But, for some reason, the trophy I won in the Leeward Islands Youth Championships, was just more memorable to me.” 14
