This Week’s Feature Story By Jane Bakewell
Onyan – Singing it out of the Park Myett’s Chill Zone in collaboration with Five Star Productions is bringing Antigua’s Reigning Calypso Monarch, Onyan to the stage at the Pier Park, on Saturday, July 9th. As part of the Grown Folks Affairs, Calypso Elimination series, Toriana “King Onyan” Edwards will be headlining along with local DJs to “Soca up de night.” Onyan started out in Antigua as a youth playing guitar and singing, he later toured with the Mighty Arrow as his guitarist. In 1984 he formed what later became Antigua’s most successful band with two of his brothers, “Bubb-I” and “Oungku” and drummer Rone “Fox” Watkins called, Burning Flames. The group later signed with Mango Records producing the album “Dig” and later released the 1989 hit “Workey Workey.” Between 1991and 1996 Burning Flames won a slew of Road March titles. In 1996 Onyan broke from the group to go solo, and the following year in 1997 released his first album “Crazy Man.” This became the

year Onyan reached the international stage and captured the Calypso Monarch Crown in Antigua as well as the Soca Monarch title plus more Road March awards. He captured this same title in ‘98, ‘99 and 2000. As fate would have it Onyan’s career was about to take another turn. Booked to play in a local Antiguan club, a chance double booking with guitarist and songwriter “Art Ski” (who was an opening act for the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Santana and Chuck Berry) brought about a meant-tobe-collaboration. Thier performance was such a hit the two came together forming “Oynan Art” and have produced eight albums ranging in music from soca, and calypso to rock and reggae. The Saturday Calypso night event begins at 5pm at the Pier Park parking lot and tickets are $25 at the gate. Myett’s Chill Zone will be supplying the drinks and light food. Come out to enjoy some pre-festival warm up music and a chance to hear one of Antigua’s great musical icons. For more details call Myett’s at 495-9649.

App Happy at the Limin Times My kids are impressed. I am impressed. Somehow I have become cutting edge – well, sort of. I have gone from a techno phobe to an “appaphile.” I never really thought I was very technically savvy, but recently I was talking to friends about my apps and, yes, they were impressed. As a person of a certain age, all my apps keep me in touch with the wider world in a way that just a decade or so ago would have seemed totally impossible. There are of course many a BVI resident too young to remember these bad old days. But once upon a time a telephone call to the US cost $1.00 a minute. And the telephone, a rather large unwieldy box of a machine, was tethered to the wall with a wire. There was no going outside the house for a private conversation. And there was no talking to my mother for longer than five minutes without taking out a bank loan. One year my son spent his entire summer job earnings on phone calls to his girlfriend in Pennsylvania. Ouch! An airline ticket required multiple trips to a Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
travel agent. And buying stuff on island was well, limited. Now there are apps for Expedia or Orbitz for travel reservations and one for Amazon or Zappos if you need something that would otherwise require a plane ticket or a ferry fare. Then there is the app for Netflix for television series, and the one for iTunes for movie rentals so keeping up with the latest films is as easy as a click of the finger. But what has really brought me fully into the digital age is the new Limin Times App developed with the help of our capable staff and locally based App Developer John Samuel. By searching for “Limin Times” on the Google Play store (if you have an android phone) or in the Apple App store for iPhone owners, you can download the Limin Times each week on either your phone or most tablets. It’s impressive. The magazine is uploaded weekly with all our stories and ads so readers who missed getting the paper copy, or don’t have it around when they need it, can still keep up with what’s going on in the islands. You can also sign up for alerts and notifications – it’s both convenient, and to my mind, cutting edge. And it’s not just for residents. My kids, who now live in Florida, use Facebook and local news websites to keep up with what’s happening here in their homeland. With the Limin Times App on their phone, they will have yet another way to maintain their connection with family and friends here in the BVI. The world has indeed become interconnected, and it is nice to be part of this global network. 6

SPOTLIGHT
This Week’s Story by By Laura Thomas
Showtime Band – Synergy Celebrating 17 years in the business, it’s safe to say that Showtime Band members are veterans of the entertainment world. “Many years ago the Showtime Band was just a dream and I never would haved imagine the level of growth. Now today, that dream is a reality,” says Ottley Hodge. “The band is all about family.” “Just like how there are ups and downs in any family, the band experiences are similar, as they are together for a vast amount of time.” Although some members of the band have changed over the years, the same quality music has remained. Showtime Band current members includes: Eustace “Boss” Freeman, Chara Edwards, Capable Caonnonier, Tremaine “GT” Daley, Sean “Chino” Woods, Shayvon “Cymbals” Smith, Leston “Kinky” Davis and Alton “Abx” Bertie. The bands’ management team includes Kensley “The Specialist” Samuel, Deshawn “Rock Man” Scatliffe and Ottley “Slippazz” Hodge. Always striving for excellence Ottley, continues to push the band and its members to produce nothing but great and memorable hits. Since the new members were inducted into the band, they have seen the band through several of the awarded Road March titles. Current singles Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
are Bomb Away, where the single talks about the way a lady dances. Synergy, just like the album’s name, talks about fan love. “The whole concept came from the love and energy we get from our fans, mixed with the energy we feel while performing,” explained Ottley. Some other popular singles by the band are Carnival Zombie, All aboard and No Self Dancing. Bring the beat! Ask Koren
Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
10 Ways to improve your Relationship Ask Koren We are halfway through the year and the first half of the year has been interesting in the “land of the loving”. Some persons formed new exciting relationships, some painfully ended theirs and others are still trudging along, trying to make theirs works. I did a quick review of the Love Booth questions received for the first half of the year and based on the relationship issues raised, I would like us to consider these 10 ways to improve our romantic relationships. Yes, you might have heard some of these before, but they need to be said again and really internalized and practised if you are to feel the positive impact. 1. Stop keeping score. A relationship is not a game where you are opponents on the opposite sides, so keeping score will always make you feel as though someone is not doing enough. Yes, it’s okay to expect to be treated well, but don’t get into the habit of always counting how much you have done and how little your partner has done and comparing. What is wrong with giving more than you take anyway? 2. Be patient and respectful. Have manners in your relationship. Some of us treat other people with so much care and respect and understanding and the slightest mistake our partner makes, we blow up on him or her. Love does bring with it expectations, but recognize that your partner is human with frailties and needs your understanding and patience, just as you need theirs. Saying please and thank you is so important so as not to take the person for granted. 3. Be honest with each other. Honesty means being faithful, being truthful, and sharing how you feel. Holding back is like having one foot
in and one out. When one person is dishonest it breaks the trust in a relationship and that is so hard to restore. Behave as if your partner is always with you and you won’t say and do certain things when apart. 4. Keep outsiders out of the relationship. Mothers-in-law are important but they shouldn’t get too much of a say. Your girlfriends’ job is to love and support you not to be taking pictures of your boyfriend to show you where he is. It’s okay to ask for or seek professional advice, but just as too many cooks spoil the broth, it’s also true that too many mouths can tear down the relationship. So be selective of who you let in. 5. Communicate positively. I cringe when I write this because I think I say it in almost every other column, but communication is not only talking to get your point across. It’s listening, it’s touching, it’s laughing together, it’s praying with each other. There are times you will need to be silent so that your partner can vent – at that moment, be the best ears you can be. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided 13

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
Athlete of the Meet Marbeq Edgar What a weekend at the 2nd OECS Track and Field Championships! By Sunday night, 22 Championship Records had been broken and 19 BVI All Comers Records had been established. On the strength of our Women, the BVI won the title after amassing 183 points. St. KittsNevis secured second place by just a point over Grenada, 176175. BVI won the Women’s Division with 129 points and St. Kitts the Men’s with 139. The hometown faithful were on their feet when anchor leg, Karene King stormed home trying to hold off the charging All American Carol Rodriguez, who nipped her at the the line in a Puerto Rican National Record of 43.43 seconds. The BVI finished at 43.45 seconds—their first time under 44.00—and in the process wiped out St. Kitts-Nevis’ OECS Record of 43.53. St. KittsNevis—with two members of their 2009 record setting squad in the lineup—placed third in 45.19. Puerto Rico’s time erased the three-year old All Comers Record of 43.97 set by Canada. Kelly had earlier run a 400m National Record of 52.29 seconds to nip defending champ Kenike Alexander of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, who ran 52.30. Nicols-Samuel was seeking a double victory in the 1500m, but St. Lucia’s Marbeq Edgar would have none of it, winning the event in 3 minutes 53.90 seconds for a Championships and All Comers Record. Edgar who also took the 800m in 1:50.22, won the inaugural Joseph “Reds” Perreira Male Athlete of the Meet Award. Grenada’s Kenisha Pascal, was the recipient of the Veda Bruno-Victor Female Athlete of the Meet after victories in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and helping her team’s 4x400m Relay to silver, behind the BVI, who ran 3:39.74 for a Meet Record. The BVI’s Tahesia Harrigan-Scott, secured a sprint double, winning the 100m in 11.25 seconds and the 200m in 23.30. After false starting in the 100m where he was favored to win, St. Kitts-Nevis’ Antoine Adams dropped a 20.38 seconds time on the board in the 200m, to shatter his countryman B.J. Lawrence’s 20.59 mark from 2014. Adams’ time was also an All Comers Record. St. Lucian’s Levern Spencer and Albert Reynolds set All Comers marks in the High Jump 1.90m and Javelin Throw, 77.23m respectively. BVI’s Tynelle Gumbs established the territo-
