Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel From the Track to the Gallery Wall Between the excitement on the track and the fashion in the stands, a day at the races is fun for the whole family. For a look at how the sport is also a significant part of BVI culture, check out the current exhibit at the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum. With photos and accompanying profiles on some of the sport’s key supporters since it first became popular here in the 1940s and 50s, the exhibit is sure to put you in the mood to head to the Ellis Thomas Downs for the next race. Each summer the museum hosts an emancipation-related display, with recent years having focused on festival queens or long-time booth owners in the festival villages, but this is the first time horse racing is being highlighted. At the recent reception for the exhibit, Junior Minister of Tourism Archie Christian said he was pleased that the sport was being highlighted, “Horseracing is one of the distinguished

features of our BVI-USVI culture and it remains a central element of our identity as Virgin Islanders,” he said. Mr. Christian added that the sport’s longstanding appeal has to do with the ties it creates between people. “Historically, it is a sport that unites families and friends in a unique bond of togetherness, and continues to cement the BVI-USVI relationship as a greater Virgin Islands,” he said. He also expressed a hope that with schools about to return to session, students will be able to learn about the sport in person by visiting with their classes. Some horseracing stalwarts featured in the exhibit include Ellis Thomas, who developed the territory’s first horse racing facility in the 1950s and for whom the current track in Sea Cows Bay is named; Bob and Letty Hodge, horse owners and advocates for the sport; horse trainer Dereck Marshall; and sports journalist Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway. The exhibit will be up through the end of September, and is open 9am to 3pm Monday through Friday. For more information contact the museum at (284) 494-9206.

Ask Koren

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

TheAsk Wrong KorenVibes? Dear Koren, I’m really stressed and distressed right now. It’s the second time for the year that I believed a guy when he said he was serious, only to realize that he was an immature game player. I’m realizing this one too has someone else he is talking with and I need to know something: Do females send out certain vibes that tell a man he can play her? – Fed up with men Dear Fed-up woman, Yes, we all send out vibes when we meet people. We have a certain body language with certain people. We look at them and smile at them in a way that says “I’m attracted to you”. However, I do not believe that you sent out any vibe to say you can be played. To accept that would be to say that you are responsible for what these guys did to you. If they played you, then they are players. No matter what kind of vibe they thought you were sending out, if they were decent, honest men, they would not have treated you that way. Your responsibility is to step back as soon as you realize that they are not genuine and not allow yourself to be continually used or abused. If you do have an air of vulnerability, that should bring out men’s protective, rather than predatory, instincts. My dear, you need to protect yourself by learning what signs to look for early to detect the sheep from the wolves. You need to love yourself

first and foremost and have high standards so you don’t settle for persons who aren’t aligned with you. You could also consider taking a break between relationships to catch your breath and figure out what you really want. I want to leave you with the words of Bianca Sparacino, who says, “Be alone. Eat alone. Take yourself on dates. In the midst of this you will learn about yourself. You will grow, you will figure out what inspires you; you will curate your own beliefs, your own stunning clarity and when you do meet the person who makes your cells dance, you will be sure of it because you are sure of yourself.” Be comforted by the fact that misguided men can affect you only as much as you let them. Choose to move past these unfortunate incidents and don’t give up on love; the real thing will come. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com or follow us on twitter @korennorton and a response will be provided

Mid-week Boxing Card Set to go Off With the Rio Olympic Games just ending, boxing—not yet a member of the BVI Olympic Committee although they have long applied—is eyeing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. One imJulan Brown, Event Organizer portant step in that direction will be taken on Wednesday, Aug. 31, when the Iron Fist Gym, a part of the BVI Boxing Federation, hosts boxers from six countries— Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Dominica, St. Maarten, Jamaica and the U.S. Virgin Islands— taking on their BVI counterparts at the Multipurpose Sports Complex at 7 pm. Admission is $50 for adults and $25 for children. The first 200 persons will get a discount on tickets which are available at Captain Mulligan and will be on sale from 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Multipurpose Sports Complex box office. “The reason we are charging $50 is because I have to do everything out of my pocket,” said event organizer Julan Brown, who is also on the night’s card and trains local fighters. “We don’t have any sponsors—we have written to them and a lot of Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

them have responded—but the only sponsor that we have is the Development Bank, who gave us the funding to print the tickets.” Brown is disappointed but said the show must go on because this is for the development of young people. “A lot of people say they are for the young people,” he noted. “Well, I’m proving to them that I’m here for the young people of this territory by doing action and not just and not just words. We will have eight bouts and the ninth is the main event,” he said. Brown said they will have heavy weight, middle weight, light weight, and bantam weight clashes. “Basically, we’re looking for the championship and hopefully from this development, we can go to the Olympic Games with some of these youngsters and the World Championships as well,” he said. “This is just the gateway for Iron Fist Boxing and the British Virgin Islands to go out there in a positive endeavor.” On the card will be several fighters from Anguilla, led by Izaiah Harrigan who will face the BVI’s Kevin Chinnery in the heavy weight division while Curlun Richardson will face the BVI’s Eric Massicotte. Kenwal Hodge, also of Anguilla, will face the BVI’s Romario Morgan. Lightweight Juan Carlos Nouell of Anguilla is scheduled to meet the BVI’s Rashad Clarke. The only female bout on the card will see Anguilla’s Livinscia Allen vs the BVI’s Ashley Miller in the heavy weight division.
