Loving Mother Earth Roundup day, visit the eco market to support local businesses that offer environmentally friendly products and services. There will also be the chance to learn something new by viewing a short film or hearing a talk from some of the BVI’s own green pioneers at 3:30pm. Visit the green bar for drinks with less waste and tips on how to eat and drink green on the beach. Of course, the day also includes plenty of fun activities. Join the paddleboard parade at 2:30pm, or beginning at 5pm, catch live music. Later, there will be a fire show, and music by A Type of Toad and CJ the DJ. If you’re on Virgin Gorda, Earth Day also marks the launch of We Recycle, the sister island’s partnership between Green & Clean VI and the Department of Waste Management to recycle cans, plastic, glass and vegetable oil. Teams of volunteer partners from the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Teens for the Ocean, and BugOut BVI will visit homes around The Valley to share details of what exactly can be recycled, as well as how and where to drop off materials. The teams will also share the latest news from the island’s ongoing efforts to reduce mosquito breeding by cleaning up litter, and administer a survey for residents.
Earth Day is this weekend and brings BVI residents the opportunity to join Green VI and the eco-conscious in nearly 200 other nations around the world to do their part for the earth. On Saturday, 22nd, Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay is Earth Day central. Fishers and those with a taste for seafood will want to register for the lionfish hunt by 12:30pm. The hunt for the invasive reef fish starts at 1pm, followed by a lesson on how best to prepare it, and a lionfish tasting at 3pm. Volunteers are also invited to put teams together and spend some time cleaning up litter on the beach or, if they’re divers, underwater. Teams should register by 2pm, and will be eligible to win awards after the cleanup. Throughout the

Beauty and By the Beast Despite all the controversy surrounding the film and the half bad reviews floating around, Emma Watson, who plays Belle, and Dan Stevens, who portrays the Beast, both give beautiful performances in the remake of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. Following the original film closely, the independent woman and bookworm Belle still has no interest in Gaston (Luke Evans) and I wouldn’t either. The guy is as arrogant as they come and he will do anything to try and get what he wants, even if it means putting Belle’s father Maurice (Kevin Kline) in the crazy house so Belle will marry him. I still think the only reason he was after Belle is the mere fact that she was the only woman in the village that never wanted him. If you missed why Belle ended up in the Beast’s castle in the first place, it’s because her father was seeking shelter from a storm. The castle’s enchanted staff was too much for his liking and he decided to leave. On his way out, he spots the Beast’s rose garden, which reminds him that he promised Belle a rose. Seeing him fleeing with the bloom, the Beast accused Belle’s dad of being a thief and took him prisoner. Once Belle took her father’s place in the castle with the Beast, despite her fears, she befriends the enchanted staff. They, in turn, encourage her to look beyond the Beast’s scary exterior, and she eventually falls in love with his kind heart. The journey wasn’t as easy though. With the help of his staff, the Beast had to learn to be kinder and speak to Belle with less anger. After learning about her father being ill Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
through the castle’s magic mirror, the Beast lets Belle go so she can check on her her father. After proving to Gaston and the villagers that her father wasn’t crazy and that the Beast does exist, they set off in the middle of the night to kill the Beast. Is this remake of Beauty and the Beast still a fairy tale as old as time and was Belle able to break the curse on the Beast and his castle? To find out you will have to go and see how it all plays out. Beauty and the Beast is now playing at UP’s Cineplex.

Men Not Monogamous Dear Koren, I don’t think it is natural for a man to be monogamous. Men are biologically and sociologically designed to hunt, to breed and to take care of females. Look at the historical perspective and see how well it worked back then. Even the bible said that the wisest man had 700 wives. Please stop making men out to be villains for having multiple relationships when it is the natural order of things. – Writer Dear writer, You are quite funny. Biological functions might be genetic, but sociological functions are learned behavior based on the culture in which you grow up; this means they can be changed depending on your geographical location, the times and seasons, what the community traditions are or what you are taught to be the norm; we know that there is no universal standard set of norms as no two places are the same and even in the same place, different time periods come with different expectations. For example even in the BVI alone, at different time periods the same behavior could be viewed differently. Even if men were biologically designed a certain way, then why aren’t they hunting now? Are women prey to be hunted and taken against their will? To suggest such is to tell men that because of their physical make-up, they have no powers of reason and judgment and they are really no higher than animals! Quite an insult if you ask me. If we look at the historical perspective as a model for modern times, we would embrace slavery, carrier pigeons and women being unable to vote and own property as par for the course. So from all angles your argument is like a man
trying to hold water in a basket with no clay to hold the straw together. For the record, the same bible that you speak of also asks that a man be the husband to one wife. I realize you are trying a thing, but sorry, it doesn’t work that way. Persons in multiple relationships are at a higher risk for sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence and self-esteem issues. A man is being objectified if he is used as a breeding stud and it is not something to be proud of. You are better off with one woman and you are much likely to be happier if a woman feels special and exclusive than if she constantly feels that she is competing with another woman; then she could make your life very miserable and it’s not worth it. Give one woman your all and the rewards are immeasurable.

Twins in the Field Djimon explained. “The first two throws again were bad, bad, bad, but on the last throw, I knew I had to focus on what I had to do, I executed and got a national youth record and a silver medal.” Diamante finished fourth with a personal best of 16.27m (52’6”). In the Discus Throw, Djimon unearthed a 60.43m (198’3¼”) effort to eclipse the 55.51m (182’1½”) he threw earlier in the season. Twin brother Diamante was ninth with a personal best of 44.71m (146’8½”). “This is absolutely amazing,” Djimon said after the Discus Throw. “I really wanted to throw 60 meters—that was my thinking in the plane before I took off to come here. It’s really special and means I’m in peak condition. I’ve been training and working hard and I’m glad I was able to come through today.” Winning both medals with personal best and improved his ranking among IAAF World Youth participants, solidifying his spot at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, July 1216. “This is special,” Djimon said. “When my brother is here, it’s like a support team. He always drives me to do more.” Diamante said competing with Djimon was an ‘awesome experience.’ “Watching him setting national records and actually going on the medal podium—that’s his first time going on the podium—I’m very happy for him as a brother,” Diamante said. “It helps me to work harder and realize as an individual, that you’re going to have your setbacks and your trials, but, your set back is always a set up for a comeback, so, I’m going to comeback harder next year.”

Twin brothers Djimon and Diamante Gumbs joined twin sisters Tynelle and Trevia who are now in college, as Carifta Games participants during the championships held in Curacao over the weekend. Djimon went on to win silver medals in both the U18 Boys Shot Put and Discus Throw with personal bests of 17.58m (57’8”) and 60.43m (198’3¼”), respectively. Diamante was fourth in the Shot Put with a personal best of 16.27m (52’6”) and eight in the Discus with a career best 44.71m (146’8½”). “Having my brother here was a very good experience for him because he is right where I was when I was in Grenada last year, seeing that it was my first year,” said Djimon who was fifth in the Shot Put and ninth in the Discus Throw last year. “He got personal bests and I’m happy for him.” In the Shot Put, Djimon came in with a best of 17.52m (57’5¾”), and was lurking in sixth place before he unleashed a mammoth 17.58m (57’8”) to claim silver. “My first two throws were bad, bad, bad, so I went over to coach Omar Jones and he said to focus and I settled down and got into the finals,” Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
