A Royal Festival of Nations Founded in March 2015 by twin sisters Lakiesha and Natisha Claxton, the Nouveau Royale Performance Ensemble (NR) dance school was birthed after the sisters were inspired by some amazingly talented students at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School. The school teaches dance through various genres of music. NR is passionate about issues regarding bullying and has performed many dances for the cause. They believe in promoting self-expression and the positive development of young girls, and dance with the motto, ‘Dance to Express not Impress’. To date the group has performed at various events throughout the territory including the recent Cheerleading Competition. In 2016, the Klassique Academy of Dance and Performing Arts of Anguilla invited them to their

ISLAND LIFE

By Laura Thomas

Welcome to Summer Dear Summer, can you please ease up on da heat a bit? You just reach and done tunin’ it up already. Thank you much! No wait, seriously, we’ve reached the swimsuit season and boy do I have a few to show-off. Oh wait! I live in the Caribbean, we’ve got summer all year round and you can go to the beach anytime, duh Laura. Okay, now that I have your attention if you have AC and are not suffering like the rest of us who have fans, but they are only throwing hot air, then this message is not for you (yup, I’m throwing shade). It’s for those of us who notice that the temperature outside trying to cook us alive and the breeze ain’t helping us out. All I’m really trying to say is - ‘Welcome to Summer’. To survive the heat and enjoy every moment of summer, here are some things you can do: Volunteer. If you’re not working and recently got home for summer break, how about volunteering your time. There are groups like the Red Cross or the Adina Donovan Home for the Elderly that would love and appreciate a helping hand. Do you love kids? There are various summer camps in the territory that also need volunteers to make things run smoothly.

Beach. Sounds cliché, I know, but when you live in these beautiful Virgin Islands it’s hard not to enjoy our white sandy beaches and sparkling water at this time of the year, whether alone or with a group of friends. Go fishing. If you don’t have a boat or access to one, there’s always rock fishing. When I was growing up and even today, I would see many along the rocks at seashores casting their lines. Even if they didn’t make a catch, there is always laughter among those who were there together. Enjoy shows and events. Summer here in our BVI also means it’s time for our Festival celebrations. Don’t forget to enjoy all or some of the events including our August Monday Parade. Heating things up before festival, there are various events like pageants and runway shows (Summer Sizzle) and plenty of Jams (don’t miss any, don’t mind me either eh! Old age kick in now, I can’t ‘lime’ without being sleepy after two hours). Most importantly Make Memories. When time slips away, we often sing our ‘shoulda’ ‘woulda’ ‘coulda’ and by that time, it’s too late. As much as you can, in whatever way you choose to do so, enjoy your summer.

Chapter 8: One last chance; Elizabeth’s demon

Thursday, 6:30pm. “Ding-dong!” went the doorbell and Liz got irritated. She was off from work and all she had been doing was answering the doorbell since she got in. As she swung open her door, she was about to tell off whoever was on the other end, but she recognized her favourite delivery guy. “Hey Adam, what are you doing here? I didn’t order anything,” Liz asked as she greeted Adam. “I know Ms. E but Michael ordered your favourite dish. He paid for it and everything,” Adam told her. Liz sucked her teeth and stood there contemplating if she should throw it in the garbage to avoid the bs that was going to come with the meal, but she was starving so eating won first dibs. “Thanks Adam, enjoy your night,” Liz told him. “Enjoy Ms. E and have a good evening,” Adam responded as he turned to leave. “Thank you and same to you A,” Liz shouted back to him. By that time, Adam had already made his way down her walkway as if he had other deliveries to make urgently. Liz was just cleaning up after herself when the doorbell rang again and this time, she was sure it was Michael. Liz opened the door with a screwed face and leaned against it bracing herself for the sorry shit she was about to hear. “Hi Liz, can we please talk, I promise not to get mad or violate you, I just want to talk,” Michael told her. Liz exhaled and stepped to the side which he took as an invitation to come in. “Baby I’m sorry and I miss you. Have you ever heard the saying you never miss the water until the Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

well runs dry?” Michael asked. Before Liz could reply he continued. “Being away from you is the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. Because of your courage to stand up to me and make it known I was hurting you I’ve decided to be a better man. I enrolled in anger management classes. Don’t get over excited, I’ve only been to one. I just started. They are twice a week and eventually, I’ll have to take you to one session. Even if you don’t take me back, part of the programme is to reach out to who you hurt and ask for their forgiveness. Will you do that for me please Elizabeth?” By the time Michael had put on his Oscar performance, Liz was in tears and bought every word. She got up, embraced him in a hug and told him, “This is your last and final chance. As long as you continue going to the sessions, I’ll hold your hand all the way. I’ll be your strength on the days you want to give up, your ears when you want to vent but I won’t be your punching bag next time you want to box. I’ll shoot you this time around.” Michael’s thoughts... “Watch her, gullible ass, drinks in everything I tell her like an idiot. She thinks I’m through with her but what is mine will always be mine. Even broken toys get love.” Elizabeth’s thoughts… “Look at him there, grinning like a proud peacock thinking he won, lord knows I miss his bedroom performances but he’s in for a rude awakening. I got several bullets with his name, so let him act up. He seems to forget that I’m a Capricorn. You will pay for what you do to us one way or the other. Damn fool!” 12

Five Ways To Make The Most Out Of Life We have come to the start of July and have closed off the first half of the year! We made it! As we embark on our second half year journey, let us do so with a spirit of positivity and optimism. Here are five ways to move forward and make the most of our lives. 1. Make time for yourself. We make time for the partner and children and for work and other obligations, but many of us never stop to think about what truly makes us feel relaxed and happy and if we know, it’s almost like we feel guilty for scheduling “me time”. Every week ensure that you spend some quality time on yourself. It could be getting a pedicure, a massage, going for a bike ride or anything else that at the end we feel refreshed and good. 2. Divorce negativity. We won’t be able to escape it all but make up your mind that you will limit your exposure to negative people and things that drain your energy. There are some people that are supposed to be friends, but they seem not to want anything good for you and their words and actions tear down more than they build up. Just create some space and protect yourself. 3. Figure out if the things you are doing are taking you towards your goals. Sometimes half the things we spend our time doing, get us nowhere. Nothing is wrong with being on Instagram and playing games and going to fetes… but if all our precious time and money goes into things that have no valuable yields, then maybe we can figure out how to readjust things a bit. The things we spend the most time and money and resources on, should be leading us to where we want to go and who we want to be. 13

4. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you made earlier. Constantly looking back and beating ourselves up does not help anybody. Let us just try to forgive ourselves and learn from our mistakes and stop carrying so much baggage from the past. We are only human. 5. Tell someone how much they mean to you. Think of someone who has been consistently there for you and schedule a lunch date or meet for coffee or a glass of wine. Let them know you appreciate them and ask if there is anything you can do for them. That will really help them to feel appreciated and you will feel better celebrating a true friend. I’m sure there are lots of other things that you can think of that will truly enhance your next six months. I always say, life is a gift, but most of us are too busy going and going to really pause and enjoy it. Of course, we will have our daily stressors, but if we can start with these five things, I can almost guarantee you, your perspective will change and life will be better. Vol. 31, 12 / Jul 4 - Jul 10, 2019

60-Year Old Leroy Outsprints The Field

I’ve heard many people making statements that they’re too old to exercise. Phillipe Leroy is not one of them. During Saturday’s BVI Cycling Federation’s National Time Trials Championships, Leroy, at 60 years, beat his 41 years younger rival, Rene Gayral of Antigua and Barbuda by a second, when he crossed the line in the 20-mile race in West End in 51.00 minutes to Gayral’s 51:01. “I was very surprised. I was expecting to do well and have been training a lot,” Leroy noted. “The guy from Antigua, I didn’t know who he was. I caught up everybody else and couldn’t tell whether I made up time on him or not and I won by one second which Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

was amazing. I couldn’t believe it. It was great.” Leroy said he expected to be easily beaten by his younger rivals as he’s 43 years older than some of them. He said he’s considering turning to triathlons which has less risk of falling and can compete against people in his age group. He also thinks he can qualify for the World Championships. What keeps him motivated? “I keep thinking I’m 35, so why not keep it going,” he said. “I’m planning on doing a world record at 100 so why not keep fit. I just love cycling, it’s a nice sport and it’s not hard on the joints. I just like the feel of going fast downhill. I know it sounds weird but, suffering going uphill, you’re hurting a lot but, you’re going hard.” On Sunday, he was third overall in the 55 miles road race behind Anguilla’s Zambezi Richardson, 19 and Gayral, 17 and thought it was a great race. “I made a mistake in the beginning when the Antigua and Anguilla guys attacked and I thought the guys from St. Vincent (Trevor Bailey Jr. and Dominica’s Bram Sanderson) were going to go after him. I wanted to save my legs and they probably thought the same thing,” Leroy explained. “We both let them go and it was too late—a tactical error. I ended up doing a lot of hard work, managed to drop them both. Even though my legs were dead, I kept going and smiling and hurting. It was a good podium finish for the BVI.”
