Night Of Nations Get your cultural wear out and brush up on your traditional dance moves because it’s almost time again for Cedar International School’s Night of Nations on February 9th. The event showcases the wide variety of different cultures which comprise our community. This diversity is reflected in the school’s students, who come from over 30 different nations, each with its own unique traditions and customs. The school campus will be transformed into a veritable United Nations as individuals take the opportunity to share and showcase various aspects of their culture. All are welcome to this community event, which promises to be a fun-filled evening of food, culture and music from all around the world. Expect notto-be-missed authentic cultural dishes, plus music and other performances. We’re told there are some

real showstoppers among the performances, including Mocko Jumbies, youth steel pan players and much more. As always, the event’s proceeds go to a good cause. This year, the beneficiaries will be young athletes as funds raised will go toward Cedar’s soccer pitch, which has been in need of a serious upgrade ever since the hurricane. Tickets at the door will be $10 for adults, $5 for students and food tickets will be $1 each. Entry fee includes a plate, knife, fork and napkin but attendees are encouraged to help minimize waste by bringing their own if possible. The event starts at 4pm and runs until 8pm. For more information, email cedar.events@cedar.vg. Don’t miss out on a great evening of family entertainment, food and fun.

Sharing a home with any pet requires tradeoffs. At our house, the cat, who adopted us when we moved into what she clearly thinks of as her apartment, provides many benefits. She is an excellent snuggle buddy whenever a family member is enjoying some quiet time with a book or a movie. She’s been very patient about her de facto role as big sister to the baby, waiting as he progressed from the stereotypical baby “pat-pat” through to understanding that animals should be touched gently. Where she used to tolerate the baby for a few moments and then dash off as kiddo got excited, she now seeks him out for attention and I think she might be trying to teach him to open doors for her. It’s been sweet to watch how much the baby loves this cat. He follows her around the house, sometimes babbling excitedly. “Gentle” is one of his first dozen words. “Meow” is another. I would even go so far as to guess that his positive experiences with our cat are the reason behind his love of the pets he meets when we are out in the world. As the adult human in the partnership, my end of the bargain is usually pretty low-key: buy some cat food, fill the dish a couple of times a day, make sure the water dish doesn’t turn green. All in all, it’s a pretty good system, most of the time. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

But then there are the times when I have to deal with the cat’s instinct to hunt. Or rather, her persistent attempts to bring her prey inside the house. Once, the only clue I had that one of her prizes was in the house was a terrible smell. I searched high and low before I discovered the source: a decaying lizard under my bed. Another time, I caught her as she was coming inside with a mouse in her mouth. Who knows where she would have stashed it if I hadn’t sent her right back out once again. Recently, she took it way too far, however, when I came home to find a ground lizard on its back. This is the biggest thing she’s ever brought inside. In my mind it looks like a small alligator, although the reality is that it was probably 12 inches long from snout to tail. Normally I find small lizards pretty cute. I’ve never willingly touched one, but neither do I find it necessary to chase them away if they want to hang out nearby, and, I don’t know, hunt flies. This one, however, was too big to be endearing, it just needed to get out. Attempting to removing it showed me the worst of the situation. The poor creature was still alive. Is there a ground lizard intensive care unit? No, but even if there was, I doubt very much they could have saved this thing. It was just the latest victim of the huntress.

She Devil
An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary
Chapter 4: Turning Point It’s been six months since I started my classes. Taking my classes in the morning and working at the club has worked out very convenient. I even have a set time in the middle of the day for assignments and some rest. It worked my nerves when word got around of what I do for a living because of the snobs around the school, but they’re just jealous. As if I want any of their broke lil boyfriends! Not that I need the approval of some spoiled, immature classmates. I was at school for one reason only, and that was to get certified. I do sometimes I wonder how my life might have turned our if I was raised right with parents in my corner or a loving family to look out for me. Sometimes I crave to know that kind of love. I guess it’s too late now, but I do like to think that if my mom was still around, she’d be proud of my trying to make a better life for myself. At work Friday night and the club was rammed full of people. It was memorial weekend and Miami was full. We had all range of celebrities in the club from ballers to rappers to movie stars. As the featured dancer tonight, plus a few trips to the VIP room, I knew I already made this month’s bills and more before the night was half over. 11
Yep, everything was going well until I heard David’s voice in my ear. Remember that one with the voice that made me want to commit sin the first time we met? He has popped up in the club a few times since then. He always wants us to go out together, but I kept refusing. Maybe if the guy would touch me once while I was dancing my heart out to him he could have won himself a date. I know if that happened I would’ve already taken advantage of him. “Hey shorty,” David whispered. I never turned around to face him, I just pressed my back into his chest. To my surprise he never moved away. We only talked that way for a minute before, I hauled him into the next available VIP room and threw him onto the chair and started dancing on him. He tried to say something a few times, but I just covered his mouth with my hand. Not tonight. He wasn’t really trying to fight me, so I knew I had the green light to do what I wanted. When his time was up, I didn’t get up to put on the vacant light to the room. I had him where I wanted him, and I wasn’t letting him go. I put my all into teasing him, but I could see I was having more pleasure than he was. At last, I decided that we’d both had enough teasing. It was time for the real thing, and there was no turning back. Vol. 30, 42 / Jan 31 - Feb 6, 2019

If we have a close relationship you would be able to recall that pre-IrMaria I hated watching African movies. In fact, I use to skip across channel 51 fast enough to pretend it never existed because I couldn’t run the risk of my mother hearing one was on and making me stop channel surfing to watch it. Of course she managed to get me to watch a few, which is how Genevieve Nnaji that caught my eye. The roles the Nigerian actress played were always classy and she delivered them well. In fact, she was the first to receive the best actress in a leading role award from the Africa Movie Academy back in 2005. Lionheart is a double-dose of our girl Genevieve, who directs as well as plays the lead character Adaeze, a loyal daughter who wants to help the family by running her father Chief Ernest’s (Pete Edochie) transportation company after dad runs into some health issues. Being a female in a male-dominated industry, this was not about to be an easy task. For one thing, her father appoints her uncle Godswill (Nkem Owoh) to be by her side. Although her uncle is very loyal and does his best to help the company, he’s a traditionalist. What’s 13
more, it’s clear that of the pair of them, Adaeze, and not Godswill, is the more competent leader. On top of that, Lionheart as a company is rife with casual sexism. Everything from mundane annoyances to out-and-out harassment are just daily bumps in the road for Adaeze. With Ernest home and away from the business, Adaeze and Godswill quickly discover that the company is in major dept. They have a short period of time to save their family from loosing the company. Their quest sends them to gorgeous places around Nigeria, which is a treat if you’re accustomed to seeing the country only as it’s portrayed in scary news pieces. On one occasion when her uncle accompanies her, Adaeze has no clue that they visit that specific place for a reason to be revealed later in the film. The film gets heated when company rival Igwe Pascal (Kanayo O Kanayo) sets his sights on acquiring Lionheart. He knows about their debt, and offers a high price to buy it out. Can Adaeza and Godswill save the company? I won’t reveal more so that you can be surprised by this feel-good film treat. Lionheart can be streamed on Netflix. Vol. 30, 42 / Jan 31 - Feb 6, 2019
Sea Cows Bay Basketball Clubs Turns 25 Milton McLean, a Primary School teacher at the time, always loved sports and used his own bus to transport his interested students to and from a variety of sporting events, free of charge. He also saw the need for youth development in sports, particularly in basketball. On April 1, 1994, McLean launched the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club, (SCBBC), with a specific focus on developing 9-12 and 13-15-year-old players. “It was organized primarily to serve the people of the Third District. I recognized that when I moved to Sea Cows Bay and before that, Sea Cows Bay had never won a local basketball championship,” McLean reflected. “I thought that if I was to bring up some youths in basketball, eventually, they could win a championship which eventually happened with Run It Red. The idea was to bring them up from young, about nine in biddy basketball and by time they’re finished with biddy basketball at 15, they could go into the local basketball league.” McLean said when he started, he thought he would be around for five to six years then turn it over to someone else. “I’ve tried quitting a few times, but every time I went around Tortola, I kept running into kids saying ‘Mr. McLean, when are you having your league again’ so I had to continue it for the them, but I surely didn’t see being involved in this for 25 years.” In reflecting on the development of the club which kicked off its 25th Anniversary activities with Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic, January 18-20 and will be involved with an All Stars game at the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) on Saturday afternoon, McLean said that over the years, they have had teams from all over Tortola and Virgin Gorda playing in their tournament and leagues. They have even accommodated 16-18-year-old to play in their league, because he saw the need for it. “We’ve had mentoring, referee clinics and have done a lot in basketball over the years,” McLean said, outlining upcoming plans. “We’re having a 1315 tournament in February. In March, we’ll have a 9-12 Showtime In Paradise Tournament. We’re bringing in Nuff Respect and Zero Tolerance teams. Then in April, we’re going to a 13-15 tournament in Orlando Florida. When we return, we’ll host a 9-12 tournament in late April. We will have a Summer League in June and in August, the Julian Fraser Save The Seed Basketball League. In November, we’ll have the Christmas League.” With no real basketball structure in place, McLean said that there’s a need for younger children to become more thoroughly engaged in the sport. “We don’t play enough basketball in the territory,” the veteran administrator noted. “Therefore, we’re not sharp enough so we’re increasing the frequency. We want them to be fit. We want them to be alert. We want them to be healthy, so this year there’s no let up.” 14
