Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel Food, Rum and Fun Fall marks the return of the tourism high season in the BVI, and the return of the BVI Tourist Board’s annual monthlong celebration of the territory’s flavors: BVI Food Fete. Most of the Food Fete events aren’t until November, but a preview and kick-off party is set for Friday, September 23rd. The launch will begin at the historic Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay. The distillery’s Arundel rums – still made the old fashioned way with cane juice aged in oak barrels – will be the basis for specialty cocktails served at the event alongside samples of fresh local fish. At the distillery, tourism officials will unveil the full calendar for this year’s Food Fete. In addition to some familiar events like the Taste of Tortola and bar crawls on the territory’s four main islands, new events like the Peter Island Caribbean Food Festival and the Jost Van Dyke Pork Festival will be added to this year’s Food Fete lineup.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

As in recent years, the highlight of the 2016 Food Fete is the Anegada Lobster Festival, set to take place November 26-27. In addition to two days of touring the island and tasting locally caught lobster prepared at restaurants around the island, the festival will also offer a tour of cultural and historic sites on the island. Each year, a well-known international chefs visit during the Food Fete, and this year’s guest chefs include Christopher Faulkner and Michael Ferraro. Ferraro, of Spike TV’s Bar Rescue fame and the executive chef and co-owner of Delicatessen in SoHo, has also appeared as a judge on Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay. Faulkner is a New Yorker with family ties to the BVI and executive chef at Solomon & Kuff in Harlem. Both chefs will be on the culinary team that prepares the fare at the October 30th Barefoot Gourmet Soiree at Norman Island. The preview kicks off at 5:30pm, with an after-party at Myett’s Garden and Grille. For more information about the BVI Food Fete, visit www. bvifoodfete.com.

Ask Koren Ask Koren I Should

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house! By Janette Costello

Help Him To Leave Her?

Dear Koren, I have been seeing a man for some months now and he has someone in his life before me. He claims that he does not want to leave her because she really helped him to build up his business when he was starting about six years ago and took a loan at the bank for him. Now he says he is in love with me, but does not want to leave her out of feeling guilt. Should I offer to borrow the money for him to pay her back so that he can be free? Happiness to me is more important than material things. – Committed woman Dear committed, Happiness is more important than material things but where does common sense fit into all this? Here is a man who took another woman’s money to start his business, now his business has grown and he has you. He has betrayed her. He convinces you that he loves you but is staying with her out of obligation. Now you are considering borrowing money to “free” him. What if you do that and he leaves her and you have him? Things will likely go well for a while. Then he meets someone else but tells her he can’t leave you because you made a sacrifice for him. Then she now decides to give him money to free him from you… and on it goes. A man could make a career out of this. He doesn’t have to pay loan fees, he just has to fall in love and being the superwomen that we are, someone always comes to his rescue. I don’t like how sarcastic I’m sounding here, but this just Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

seems so clear to me that something is not right about this guy. Is it not possible to find any other man who is not already attached romantically or financially to someone else? Anyone at all? Nothing is wrong with making sacrifices for the one you love, but some things should be reserved for someone who you already have a commitment to. That you are committed to him is clear from how you signed your email, but from his actions, is he committed to you? One cannot buy love or loyalty, it must be freely given. I want to suggest that you look in the mirror and say this to yourself: “I am a woman of class and value. I deserve real, true and honest love and I will not settle until I find it.” By the way, if in all my rambling, my answer is not clear, then let me be more direct. NO. Reflections on 20 years in the College Classic Series worry about the runners. If you come, you don’t have to listen to anyone. You can run, you can walk, you can even saunter if you want, but the whole idea is getting out there with a group of people and getting fit.” He attributes the growth in participation over the years to the series’ welcoming spirit. “I don’t think those of us who participated in those first series never imagined that we’d see over 200 runners and those running today, cannot imagine that there were only 19 runners then,” he explained. “We were in the 20s and the more it got around and the more people realizing it’s not an activity that’s going to kill you—you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to participate—come on out and have some fun. You can come from the corporate sector, the private sector, just starting work, young or old, the series is something that everyone can have in common. You traverse the same path, pass the same bushes, same fences, same dogs, same smells, same atmosphere and that’s something we all have in common in the pursuit of maintaining good health.” He said is his fondest memory is seeing the variety of participants: “Everyone from the Rotary members to the primary schoolers, open category runners, persons from different corporations— you have pieces from every corner of society,” he said. “It’s like a melting pot within a melting pot.” Approaching 50, McLean said he was shocked to finish seventh overall on Saturday. “I suppose a little bit of experience and most importantly maintaining good health, is what allowed me to finish in the top 10,” he said.

When the first race of the College Classic Series kicked off at 4 p.m. on Oct. 19, 1996, Zebalon McLean was one of just 19 participants. When the 21st edition began last Saturday with 262 participants, he was still there, and placed seventh overall. In fact, over the years he’s missed very few of the College Classic races. “I missed a series when I Zebalon McLean was in college, that included five races and then I missed another due to illness and another due to official travel duties so that’s seven in all,” McLean reflected on his 20 years of participation. Health was his initial motivation for racing. “I came on board because I was also interested in seeing persons who would not otherwise do anything get involved in some sort of physical activity,” he noted. “You only have a finite amount of years on the earth, so you need to take care of your body to enjoy all of them as best as you can.” Over the years, he’s watched as the race series has expanded to welcome people at all different fitness levels. “I was pleasantly surprised as it was a novel idea and I didn’t expect it to last this long,” he said. “But I’m so glad because what has helped, is that there are so many categories. When you have a guy out there running at 100 mph, you don’t have to worry about him, you run inside your class. The walkers as well, they don’t have to Limin’Times Entertainment Gude
