SPOTLIGHT By Laura Thomas
BayRoc
Have you got your piece yet? Neither did I, so what are we waiting on? I mean seriously do you see their latest print? Real dope. Darryll was born in the US but grew up in Cane Garden Bay, British Virgin Islands, which is also where BayRoc came to life back in 2007. He received his college education in Rhode Island where he studied architecture, photography, multimedia and web design. It wasn’t until after his first fashion show in St. John in 2012 that he began to think of fashion as a serious option for his creativity. His Summer Sizzle appearance was a few months later, and he credits the opportunities he had there with igniting his real passion for fashion. The years that followed saw him doing further shows as far away as California. Recently, Darryll took a break from fashion shows to work on building his brand, but look out for him to make his grand return in 2019. He’s currently working to get BayRoc in retail stores and be readily available to the people. “Right now I’m excited to be working with some new ambassadors I got together. They are very creative, so I’m positive we’ll do great things together,” Darryll said. He went on to say that while his style has grown more sophisticated over the years, he remains committed to the aesthetic that he founded the line with. “BayRoc is a brand of clothing largely hand printed, with a mixture of contemporary and abstract art,” he said. His major inspirations are street art and his home, the BVI. Recently, he’s been offering the vibrant designs as fine art prints for those who appreciate the style, but would rather hang it on their walls than in their closets. Currently, BayRoc items can be purchased online at www.bayrocstyles.com. They’ll soon available in JBY in the Tortola Pier Park. Besides the website, you can also find Darryll and on Instagram @bayrocstyles and Facebook @BayRoc. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

Get Ready for Gaming Night If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to get dressed up and show off what a card shark you are, mark your calendar because the annual BVI Humane Society Gaming Night is coming up on Feb. 2. We’ll get to the details on the main event in a minute, but first, the reason why we want to let readers know about the party in advance: they’re looking for volunteer card dealers. Over the years I’ve had a lot of friends participate in this event as blackjack dealers and they’ve all reported that it’s the most fun way you can donate your time to a good cause. If you want to help out as a dealer but aren’t too experienced with cards, that’s not a problem because as usual, they are holding training sessions in advance of the event. Beginning this week at the Tortola Sports Club, every Tuesday and Thursday evening between now and the event is a chance to get some training and practice your skills. Just email humane@surfbvi.com to let them know you’re coming.
Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.
For those who just want to enjoy the night out, don’t forget that it’s tradition to dress up. “It’s always an elegant and fun evening,” said Vijay Bissoondutt, BVI Humane Society shelter manager. As usual, the event will be held at Nanny Cay and the fun begins at 7pm. Entrance costs $30, which includes your first $10 worth of chips. In addition to the card tables, there will also be crab races and roulette. When you’ve had enough of winning, cash in your chips for one of the great prizes donated by event sponsors around the BVI. Don’t forget, all the proceeds from this night of fun go toward supporting the BVI’s only animal shelter, which has been going strong since 1975. Besides taking in abandoned and abused animals as a service to the public, the shelter also provides pet boarding, vaccines, grooming and even obedience training, and of course, they should be your first stop if you are looking to adopt a pet into your home.

In a project that would have seemed farfetched just a few years ago, China recently landed a probe called Chang’e-4 on the moon. The most recent news from the project is that some cotton seeds planted inside the lander have sprouted, along with hopes in the space exploration community that the moon could eventually be used as a home base for future explorers. The idea is that rather than coming home to earth, future astronauts could simply grow the food they need on the moon. You might say this project is about as far from our little island as possible, but I’d argue that island life and space exploration share many of the same strengths. For one thing, space missions are right to start thinking about plants early. Relying on imports for basic necessities is the main reason island living is so expensive, and any disruption in transport channels trickles down to every other aspect of life here. Chinese researchers started with cotton plants since those can be harvested to make fabric. According to reports, the Chang’e-4 also carried potato seeds and yeast, so clearly staple foods are another priority. Whether on islands or in space, it’s clear that teamwork is crucial. As many of us have seen time and time again, island folks know how to pull together Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

to help each other out. We share rides and water; we check to make sure our neighbors are okay after a storm; and, if we see someone stranded on the road, we stop and help however we can. The most successful space endeavor so far (21 years in space!) is the international space station. The five space agencies who partner on the project represent the US, Japan, Russia, Canada, and 22 European nations. No doubt all these countries’ governments have some serious disagreements, but they are able to put such conflicts aside for the good of the greater mission. As futuristic as space exploration still seems, both island dwellers and space explorers do best when they rely on their history to guide their decisions. In our case, specialized local knowledge of everything from seasonal weather patterns to tourism trends help us make smart decisions in the day-to-day. In space, knowing which missions landed safely on Mars since Russia’s partially successful 1971 Mars 3 were key to the NASA’s InSight touching down on the red planet in November. What else do space explorers and island dwellers have in common? Let me know on the Limin’ Times Facebook page.

She Devil
An attractive female who is capable of manipulating men into getting their way – Urban Dictionary
Chapter 2: Devil’s Advocate I rolled over and hit my alarm button before the noise triggered a headache. Today was my day off from the club and I had to do some house cleaning. I’m not a messy person but with how busy the club has been for the last few days, my home was a little neglected. On Tuesday we had a big group of guys from out of town who’d been sent there on the recommendation of one of our regulars. Those guys definitely came out to have a good time and they weren’t stingy with the cash. After handling my morning hygiene routine, I headed to my kitchen to make breakfast. I live in a penthouse that I bought after two years working at the club. Thankfully, our club wasn’t a regular strip club; if you’re broke you can’t party there. Plus, as a VIP girl I never see the stingy ones. Whew! What a day, I thought as I tossed my last garbage bag down the trash chute. It was about 4 o’clock, and I was beat. I’d hit my gym room before a shower and a relaxing evening. I know you didn’t expect this body to be less than perfect. I have to take care of my money maker. By the time my next shift rolled around, all that rest and relaxation went out the window: Britney is, once again, trying to crawl on Troy like she wants to be his pet. Some people seem like they want to bring out the devil in me. First things first. As usual for a Saturday night, the place was full of ballers and wannabes alike. Personally I was eyeing a couple of local celebs – your 11
girl was going to pull bank tonight. When things slowed down I came across the boss in the back room. “You know Angel, it’s been a while since I had your company, care to join me tonight?” I was about to say no but then it hit me that an evening with the boss would be the perfect way to teach Britney a lesson without getting my hands dirty. “Sure,” I said. “You ready to head out?” When he nodded yes, I grabbed my bag and followed him to the parking garage. Since I was going in his vehicle, his right hand man Toni took my keys to follow us in my ride. You see, once you work for Da Don, you had to trust his immediate circle too. We ladies were also off-limits to his inner circle. He was all about making money, so his money makers were always to be protected. When the time was right, I made my request. “I need you to do something for me,” I said. “I’m listening,” he replied. “I need to teach Britney a lesson and you’re going to help me.” “Angel, why are you trying to get me mixed up in this petty drama? I don’t see the point when Troy does have a wife and a baby mama so all y’all are sharing him,” he said. Sigh, did I ask for a reality check? I felt like kicking him out of his own bed. But, I thought to myself, he hadn’t come right out and said no. One way or another, he was going to help me. Vol. 30, 40 / Jan 17 - Jan 23, 2019
Alcoholic Girlfriend Dear Koren, My girlfriend is a very nice and classy person. She comes from a good family and we always have fun when we go out, until she starts to drink. She cannot control herself after a few drinks and starts to act crazy. How should I bring it up with her so she doesn’t get upset? –M Dear M, It sounds like you are a bit in awe of this girl when you mention her family background and also your reluctance to upset her. First of all, if you are in a relationship with someone, you should feel comfortable enough with them to be able to tell them when they are going off track as a means of helping them to improve and saving them from embarrassing themselves. It’s better you tell her than she ends up in a car accident or falling and hitting her head or something. It sounds like you have observed her for a while and you are not just being judgmental. This means, that when you talk to her, you can mention specific incidents without making the list too long, as she will feel you are keeping count and that’s all you look for. Let her know that you care and that you want the best for her, but you notice that her behavior changes after “x” amount of drinks. She is likely to get defensive; however, if she is open to discussing it, then you can both find a simple online test to see if she fits into the category of someone who abuses alcohol or if she just has a low tolerance for it. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
She can try to get help if she accepts that her behavior is out of control or she can try to lessen it on her own. Either way, alcohol or other mood altering substances are not things for anyone to play with if it has the potential to change their behavior negatively and cause life-changing consequences. Let love be the motivator for you to try to help her. .................................................................................... Send your questions and comments to askkoren@live.com. Over the last year or so, a lot of women have been in the comedy spotlight. Retta and Tiffany Haddish both released very funny books. Nicole Byer is shining bright on the baking competition Nailed It. Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams’ second 2 Dope Queens series on HBO just came out and it’s incredible. As a still relatively new mom, however, the comic giving me life right now is Ali Wong, who took the mommy-internet by storm back in 2016 when she released Baby Cobra, a 1-hour stand-up special for Netflix. Her raunchy style and frank talk about her personal life seemed almost transgressive coming from a woman, perhaps more so because she’d recorded the special while 7 months pregnant. Fast forward to this year, when her second Netflix special Hard Knock Wife was released. Again, she’s 7 months pregnant, but now, like me, she’s hardened by the special craziness that is having had a baby. No doubt about it, a big part of the appeal of this special is the way she contrasts the expectations she had about being a stay-athome mom (bon bons and brunch dates with friends) with the reality of 13
caring for a newborn (“your body is a cafeteria now”). As much joy as we moms genuinely get from our children, it’s refreshing to see a woman take the stage and air a little of the dark side of #momlife: Not just the sleepless nights and dirty diapers, but also the isolation of the newborn days, the changes to your body and your relationship to your partner, the obnoxious questions that nobody would dare ask a new dad, and that deep-down need to get away from your beloved child for a break every once in a while. Ali’s also hilariously physical, twerking, pantomiming, even getting on the ground to demonstrate how a lactation consultant had her do pushups into a bowl of hot water to unclog a milk duct (sidenote: I know it wouldn’t be relatable to everyone, but I could watch an entire set of breastfeeding jokes). If it hasn’t been clear before now, she’s not for the faint of heart. In other words, she may talk about life with little ones, but her set is very much only appropriate for adults. Stream Hard Knock Wife (and Ali’s previous special, Baby Cobra) on Netflix. Vol. 30, 40 / Jan 17 - Jan 23, 2019
Four Qualify in Carifta Games Season Opener When officials announced the result to be recorded, Discus Thrower Diamante Gumbs put his hands over his mouth in disbelief, then dropped to his knees while twin brother Djimon begged him not to cry. Earlier on Saturday morning during the Dag Samuels Development Series season opener, Diamante had booked his ticket to the Cayman Islands for the April 20th–22nd Carifta Games. “I wasn’t even expecting any of this to be honest,” Diamante said after his 52.39m measurement. “Everything surprised me today. But, I thank God for giving me the strength to do what I had to do. I’m at a loss for words.” Overcome with emotions, he passed on his remaining throws. When asked what it means to qualify in both events after securing a spot in the Shot Put with a 16.80m effort, Diamante said it means that he has put in a lot of work and that he has a lot of work to do, including more strength training and working on his technique. “Once I get the two of those down pact with big faith and hard work, I feel like I’m going to make it far,” he stated, adding it’s good to have his brother on the team as it serves as motivation for each other. “I push him to be his best and he pushes me to be my best and once we qualify to go the same place, it’s like we’re clicking,” he said. “We have that same vibe and know what to tell each other at Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
the right time to motivate each other.” Diamante, competing in the U20 Boys Division, was joined by Djimon and U17 Girl, Palesa Caesar in the event along with U17 Boys Jaleel Croal in the 100m as the first set of Carifta qualifiers. Djimon said they worked hard in the off season, the results are showing, but obviously we have more work to do. He’s content with the performance and qualifying for Carifta. “By Carifta we’ll be ready,” he said. “I’m trying to get a gold medal for both shot and disc at Carifta.” Another surprised qualifier was Caesar who took up the Discus and Shot Put after Hurricane Irma. “I never threw that far in practice, I used to throw 30-32m,” she said of the 34.90m measurement. “When I heard the mark I said ‘I’m going Carifta,’ I was so happy. Jaleel Croal is heading to his second Carifta Games after running a 100m personal best. “Before the race, I said I was going to qualify early and get it out the way and I did that and ran a personal best of 10.99 seconds,” he said. “I saw what it was like last year and it’s not a game. I have to train hard. I’ve been working on my form which was really wack and speed drills. I also want to improve in the 200m. I was third in my heat last year and I want to change that.” 14
