Domestic Violence Awareness Domestic Violence is abuse is by one person against another when both are members are the same family or household. Victims may be children or adult men or women, including the elderly. The violence can take multiple forms, ranging from physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, economic to religious abuse. In each form, the perpetrator uses physical force or some other form of coercion against his or her victim. In most cases domestic violence occurs when the abuser believes that he or she is entitled to treat the other person this way. He or she knows that such behavior, taking place within the bounds of a family home, is unlikely to be reported. Over time, as children observe the abusive behavior happen among adults in their family, domestic violence can become an intergenerational cycle. Last year saw a decrease in domestic violence reports, with only 150 cases (in 2016 there were 237 cases reported), but there may be more incidents that go unreported. As October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Office of Gender Affairs, in partnership with the Family Support Network and the BVI

Cancer Society, will continue to educate the public about healthy relationships and work with agencies responsible for reporting or handling domestic violence cases. Under the theme ‘Domestic Violence Awareness + Action + Life Change’ – the Office of Gender Affairs has scheduled activities throughout the month of October. Age-appropriate domestic violence awareness sessions will be held in secondary schools throughout the territory all month long. This Friday, in a joint venture with the BVI Cancer Society, information can be collected at the fair in front of National Bank. On October 19th they will hold another fair in front of Scotia Bank. Later in the month, join their Family Fun Day, set for October 27th at the Queen Elizabeth II Park. This will be a collaboration with the Family Support Network. At the end of the month, show your support for those dealing with domestic violence by wearing purple on October 31st for Paint the Town Purple. For more information on the Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities, please call the Office of Gender Affairs at 852-7783 or visit their Facebook page @officeofgenderaffairsVI.

Far from the poetic colorchanging leaves of New England, or even from Instagram’s fall favorite, pumpkin spice, autumn in the Caribbean is a different flavor altogether. In general, we lucky island dwellers can expect things to remain pretty much the same from season to season: We keep visiting the beaches, never lose track of our shades, and definitely have no need to un-mothball the scarves and coats. Still, there are a few signs it’s not summer anymore around here. Cooler temps: Granted, we probably won’t have anything you might describe as “crisp” any time too soon, but it has already started to cool off a touch. I can tell because I’ve switched the fan from “gale force winds” to “stiff breeze” setting and the heat rash that the baby and I have both been battling since May has finally subsided. Soon I’ll want to put on a light sweater! Shorter days: I have to admit, it’s a bit harder to jump out of bed in the morning now that the sun isn’t shining into my face before 6am. But it’s nice to have dark in the evening. I can even use the oven again without the entire apartment feeling like a sauna. More visitors: Although they aren’t quite in daily just yet, the cruise ships are back at the pier on a regular Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

basis. There are also a lot more vessels dotting the territory’s waters than there were just a few weeks ago. All those extra sailors are a sure sign that the Christmas winds aren’t far off. Which also means…
Re-openings: Some of the restaurants and bars that took a break over the slow summer period are opening back up again, meaning we all have a lot more options when it comes to going out, socializing, eating and drinking. Whether you’re revisiting old favorites or trying someplace new, fall is a fabulous time for foodies and going out in general around here. Events galore: Hands down, my favorite part of fall is the return of the BVI’s busy event schedule. You’ll start to see the events listings here in the Limin Times get pretty crowded with parties, festivals, sailing races and other entertaining events. Later this month the annual favorite BVI Food Fete will kick off, then we will all get to enjoy a month of food, fun and culture before the pressure of Christmas. What are your fall favorites? Head over to the Limin Times’ Facebook page and let us know!

Wreck-It Ralph
By Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel
When I saw this one on the iTunes top rentals list recently, I was surprised: Why are so many people renting a 6-year-old flick? Turns out, the sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet, is coming out next month. Better re-watch the first one to get ready! I wasn’t disappointed. The movie may be marketed for kids, but it’s filled with old-school video game characters and references, so it’s a lot of fun for grown up gamers. Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is a video game character whose village is an arcade. He and all the other characters go to “work” in their various games while the arcade is open, but after hours are free to mingle at The Power Strip and even visit with the folks from other games. What could be better? For Ralph, years as the destructive nemesis in the game Fix It Felix, Jr have worn him down. He even goes to Bad-Anon, a villain support group where he can commiserate with the likes of Bowser, Zangief and one of the ghosts from Pac Man. When he returns to his game to find Felix (Jack McBrayer) and the other characters celebrating the game’s anniversary, he’s crushed to learn that he wasn’t invited to the party. Felix guiltily says that Ralph should come up, but the rest of the characters shun him, and suggest he go back to his game home, a sad dump. 11
Ralph decides that he can be at least as much of a hero as Felix, and sets out to earn himself a medal to prove it. He winds up inside Hero’s Duty, a first-person shooter game that awards players a medal when they win. Thanks to the help of Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun (Jane Lynch), Ralph manages to get his medal, but flubs his exit and winds up with an unwanted companion when he lands in Sugar Rush. Once inside the bright, candythemed racing game, Ralph meets young Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman). The aspiring racer has her own reasons for wanting a medal, and swipes Ralph’s. She pledges to give it back to Ralph, but first, he will have to be her pit crew and help her win her next race. Meanwhile, Ralph’s absence from his rightful game has been noticed and an “out of order” sign has been placed on it, so Felix heads out to get Ralph back before the arcade retires the game permanently. Why does Vanellope need to win this race so badly? Will Felix get Ralph home in time to save their game? How will Ralph make peace with his role as a bad guy? Wreck-It Ralph is available on iTunes and other streaming services. Vol. 30, 27 / Oct 11 - Oct 17, 2018

Miss World BVI 2018; Yadali Thomas Santos This 22-yearold beauty was born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic but joined her family in the British Virgin Island at age 10. She passes her free time by listening to music and reading and she is also a lover of BVI cuisine. She would challenge anyone who dares put any dish above the BVI’s Peas Soup. Yadali lives by the motto – Nothing is impossible. This is the frame of mind that motivated her to conquer her childhood language barriers. Despite learning English only after moving here, she became an honor student in primary, secondary and college. After capturing the Miss World BVI crown on August 11, Yadali has been on a quest to make the BVI proud. Her goal is to continue the tradition of past Miss World BVI queens by making her presence felt on the prestigious Miss World stage. She’s also been immersed in her platform of youth development. This “beauty with a purpose” has been a volunteer instructor at YEP. She believes nurturing young minds will lead them to ultimately become productive citizens. Yadali has also worked with other youth groups such as MALE. In addition to her passionate focus on youth development, Yadali finds time to bring the territory’s environment into focus. This is evident in her push to protect Virgin Islands marine life with a particular focus on turtle preservation. She is keen on ensuring that generations to come enjoy the benefits of having a healthy turtle population in BVI waters. In 13
furtherance of this mission, Yadali has signed on to the “No extinction in my generation” campaign, and has been using her platform as Miss World BVI to educate our youth on the importance of protecting sea turtles. As it relates to the international competition, Yadali is working with various groups and individuals to ensure she is well prepared to represent the territory. The BVI Tourist Board is helping her to have a greater understanding of our tourist product, while Arlene Penn and Natalie Hodge are helping her polish her deportment and interview skills. Her chaperones Leana Simon and Deria Joseph continues to help with her stage preparations. Additionally, Dr. Allision Flax-Archer is preparing her for the talent round of the competition, and CastAway – Crossfit training is getting her ready for the sports challenge. There’s also something we as a community we can do to help Yadali get ready for the global competition: downloading the Mobstar app, search for “Yadali” and vote by swiping right or yes to all content and by liking the Miss World BVI FB page. Our votes for Yadali will boost her multimedia score, which is also a judged segment at the Miss World Finals. Miss World BVI Yadali Thomas Santos is scheduled to depart the territory on November 8 for Sanya, China. Vol. 30, 27 / Oct 11 - Oct 17, 2018
