Wellness Walk Did you know that taking good care of your physical health can lead to better emotional and spiritual health? This and other fun facts about wellness will take center stage on Saturday June 9th for Global Wellness Day, which the BVI will be marking with a Wellness Day Walk and Relay at Queen Elizabeth II Park. The day is all about being active in whatever way is appropriate for each person, so there are several options including an individual walk up into the hills around Road Town, a four-person team walk of the same path, and a 10,000-step challenge for walkers who prefer to stay on the grounds of the QEII Park. The easiest way to register for the walk and relay is to email aglasgow@ vinhi.vg, but you can also show up to the park before the 5am start time and register in person. The event is also a launch party for the National Health Insurance’s Disease Management and

Wellness Program, a long term effort at encouraging residents to maintain whole-body wellness. “It’s all about the way that we live our lives,” said NHI Medical Director Dr. Harlan Vanterpool on a recent Government Information Services interview. He added that as a medical practitioner, he’s seen how young persons with unhealthy lifestyles often wind up with chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension, while those in their 70s with healthy habits can be disease free. The theme for Wellness Day is “One Day Can Change Your Life,” which Dr. Vanterpool explained is about the power that one event like the Wellness Day Walk and Relay can have. “If you made a commitment to living a healthier lifestyle and you’re willing to go forward with it, then that’s what’s going to happen,” he said, adding that for many people, remaining active is key to maintaining joy.

Baby Beach Day Being able to have an awesome beach day is one of the best parts of living here in the BVI, but, as I’ve recently realized, heading to your favorite beach for the day becomes a lot more complicated when you have to cart a little one with you. Over the last several months, I’ve been conducting serious field research on how best to enjoy a beach day with a little one. Here are my preliminary findings on the best way to include a baby in your beach day. 1. Contain The Baby. Maybe you have a mobile play yard or one of those zip-up cribs with the handles. There can be a lot to carry to the beach already, but trust me, bring that baby containment unit. My little one likes sitting in his inflatable pool, which we set up for him without any water inside. He likes to lean out of it to play with the sand, but I’m able to relax and enjoy myself somewhat knowing that he can’t crawl off into the bush or pick up any stray beach litter. 2. Help Baby Entertain Him or Herself. For us grownups, it’s often enough to sit and stare at the water, but babies will insist on being wiggly, grabby little creatures, so now we bring toys (and things like plastic food containers that my son thinks are toys) which are great to keep him occupied so

Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

that the grownups can do stuff that requires two hands, like eating. 3. Give The Sea A Few Tries. Our little guy loves bathing at home, so we figured some splish-splash fun in the ocean would be a cinch. Not so. As soon as a very mild wave touched his little toes, he cried. Hard. But after giving him a few minutes to get accustomed to the water (and making sure he felt comfortable snuggled up to his daddy), he got to really liking it. 4. Put Things Away As You Go. It’s a bit of a hassle to keep track of all your various belongings on the beach, but when the little one has had enough and it’s time to go right-this-minute, you’ll be glad you didn’t leave everything you brought with you scattered in a 20-foot wide circle around you. If you can get a sweet spot on the sand right next to your vehicle, so much the better. 5. Embrace Sand. It doesn’t matter how many rinses, how many brush-offs, how often you redirect a baby, a beach trip pretty much always means the kid is going to come away as the sandiest, messiest version of themself. So what if they eat a little sand? A day at the beach means the kid is also happy and exhausted, so as a mom, it’s a big win.

Why Him? In an update to the classic odd couple comedy, Why Him? brings together Ned (Bryan Cranston), a straightlaced dad and paper company executive and Laird (James Franco), a completely filterless “internet zillionaire,” who is dating Ned’s daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch). The film follows Ned, his chipper wife Barb (Megan Mullally) and their overachiever son Scotty (Griffin Gluck), from their snowy Michigan home to Laird’s sprawling compound in sunny California. At first, it seems like Laird is just trying too hard to be an iconoclast: he has no boundaries or work in the traditional sense and delights in flouting traditions of all kinds. It makes him pretty unlikeable, as well as the perfect foil for Ned, who is basically an amalgamation of every starched-shirt middleclass dad you’ve ever seen portrayed onscreen. But fairly early on, we see that Laird wants to be part of a family, and he loves certain traditions. He even takes Ned aside to ask for his blessing on Laird’s plan to propose to Stephanie. When Ned is so caught off-guard by the question that he doesn’t even soften the blow of his “no,” Laird, takes it as a challenge. For the rest of the movie, his mission is to win Ned over with extravagant gifts, some rather underwhelming charm, and a bit of over-planned manly bonding. My second favorite thing about this movie is how it manages to juxtapose some very crass hu11

mor (if you’re not into gross-out moments or four-letter words, skip this one), with a genuinely touching story of a young(ish) man seeking the approval and guidance of a father figure In column A, you have Barb learning how to twerk, Laird’s fresh tattoo of the family’s last portrait, bizarre art of a moose in its own urine, and a bunch of silly moments with Laird’s scenestealingly hilarious trainer Gustav (Keegan-Michael Key). Then in column B you have Laird inspiring Scotty to be an entrepreneur, Stephanie connecting with her dad, and Laird eventually taking Ned’s advice about what his daughter would actually want in a marriage proposal. Not to leave you waiting too long for it, but my very favorite thing about this movie is the co-stars. The director may have wanted us to obsess over Ned and Laird becoming bros, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Mullally as Barb. She is sweet but game for anything and gets laughs even when she doesn’t have lines. Same goes for Key as Gustav, who has a ridiculous accent, trains Laird in Parkour, and is also some sort of spiritual guru. It doesn’t even make sense but it was still funny, which is more than I can say for some of the gross-out gags. The movie seems to want to lead up to a storybook wedding for Laird and Stephanie, but I’m happy to report it takes a swerve in a much more interesting direction to manufacture Ned’s acceptance of Laird. Why Him? is available on iTunes. Vol. 30, 9/ June 7 - Jun 13, 2018

Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 2: Cracks in the Surface

I rolled over and tried to ease out of the bed, not wanting to wake up Pierre. Pierre and I have been dating for a few months, but it’s nothing serious. We both have hectic schedules, but we try to spend what free time we get together, even if it’s just for me to stay at his place or him to come over to mine. He was not the magazine looks kind of guy I would normally go for, but I gave him a chance. I thought that maybe if I stop letting idiots in and out of my life, maybe I could find some kind of peace. And Pierre does have an awesome personality, there are so many things we have in common, but good Lord he was boring in bed. I tried to teach him some tricks but it just wasn’t working. Sigh! It was now 7:30am and the sound of the shower let me know that Pierre was now up and getting ready for work. We were both heading to our separate cars when I spilled my drink on my favorite shirt; I’d have to to take it to the dry cleaners again. After heading back inside to change, I barely made it to work on time. I was sitting at my desk going over some designs for my two o’clock meeting when my phone buzzed. “Hey Pierre, sure I’ll meet you there,” I said hanging up the call. He asked if I ccould meet him at our usual spot to get a quick bite. It wasn’t any place fancy, just Sinful Bites, a fast food joint down the block from where I worked. With a body like mine, you might think I Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

wouldn’t be caught dead having lunch in a place like that. Sad thing is the key to my awesomeness would take you to the grave. After lunch was the dreaded 2 o’clock. Ever had a know-it-all client that only loves to hear the sound of their own voice? Take a look at Damonte Hue, a successful, arrogant brother who feels that because he was born with a gold spoon in his mouth and had managed to take his father’s company to higher levels, he can treat people however he wants. The only reason I’m putting up with him is because this was a million-dollar project that would look great in my portfolio if ever I decided I was going to branch out on my own. He bought some property on an island in the Caribbean and wanted a resort-style house built on it. Of all the firm’s designers, he had asked for me, claiming that he loved my work, but I suspected he had ulterior motives. Damonte had a reputation for being a player who used his good looks to get with every woman in reach. He wouldn’t get anywhere me, though. That cocky attitude turned me off; I could barely stand the guy as a client, and by the time we finished our meeting I was zapped. “Aaliyah please cancel the rest of my afternoon appointments, I’m not feeling well,” I asked my assistant on the way out the door. Sigh, that felt great but it wasn’t healthy. I needed help. 12

5 Things Not To Base Your Relationships On Almost everyone is looking for love, but sometimes our reasons for getting into a relationship are less about love, and more about the perception that a person will fill a need. These needs might not all be bad, but if we are pursuing a relationship just to get them, then we might be using the other person. Here are some things that should never be the foundation of your relationship: 1. Money. It’s hard to manage on next to nothing, especially if a person has children and a lot of bills. However, going into a relationship just for the material gain is a trap in the long term. If the giver becomes abusive or behaves badly otherwise, it’s hard to walk away if you’re dependent on the financial help. It’s better to live as simply as you can and make sacrifices until you can do better. This way, you also keep your dignity intact. 2. Good looks. A beautiful body or a muscular build is certainly attractive, but what if the object of your desire has an accident that disfigures them? Will you then leave? Also, outer beauty is not a guarantee of niceness and a person’s personality is what makes the relationship worth holding onto when things get tough. Good looks don’t solve problems, or comfort you when you are down but a kind heart will. 3. Fixing the other person. It might seem noble at first to be helping another person do or feel better, but the relationship will have no balance. You will end up feeling resentful about always giving and the person always taking. It’s okay to help your partner sometimes, but 13

ensure that the relationship has a fair exchange and balance of power. 4. Loneliness. It’s easy to fall into the arms of the first available person or the one who wants you most when you get tired of going to the movies alone. Hard as it might be to accept, it really is better to be alone than to get involved with the wrong person. Find alternative ways to spend your time: hobbies, charitable causes, or spending more time with friends or family will help you feel better about yourself without tying you to a poor partner. 5. Revenge. Doesn’t it hurt like a dagger in your heart when the man you were dating breaks off the relationship and then posts pictures of his new person on Facebook? Of course, you feel like you have to retaliate, so you start dating his friend just to make him upset and post even more revealing pictures. This new guy probably didn’t sign up for that, nor for being dropped like a hot potato if the ex comes back. Sometimes we feel broken, desperate, hurt or angry and these feelings drive us toward the simplest answer seeking to heal the hurt. We need to find better ways to heal and it starts with loving ourselves and working through our “stuff.” When we can acknowledge what our fears and pains are and deal with them, then we can bring our healing selves into a healthy relationship. We won’t be perfect, but at least we know that we are capable of giving and receiving genuine love and not some form of it that has the potential to cause more harm than good. Sport and Writing in Russia Football player Deshawn Richardson, 13, of Robinson O’Neal Primary School and young journalist Ryan Ramlall, 12, of the Bregado Flax Educational Center, will attend the FIFA supported Gazprom Football For Friendship international children’s program in Moscow, Russia from June 8-15. They will be accompanied by coach Richie Morton and Ramlall’s father Vaman. Young footballers will be split into 32 teams— named after endangered animals of all the continents of the world—and organized using the ‘football for friendship principle,’ meaning that athletes of different nationalities, genders and physical abilities will play together on one team. They’ll also be trained by young coaches from around the world. “I was surprised,” said Richardson. “I never knew I’d go so far. I’m looking forward to making the BVI proud and being a good ambassador. It’s a good opportunity for me to see a lot of people who I like in football.” Richardson, a right back who has goal keeping experience, plays on a combination Robinson O’Neal/Bregado Flax team, has been playing since 2014. “I like football because you can travel and get to meet other people,” said Richardson, who played on the BVI’s U14 Boys team in St. Maarten and Puerto Rico, where they finished second and third respectively. “I moved from right back to play goalkeeper in the St. Maarten game. They only scored on me Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

in the penalty shootout. I enjoyed goal keeping because after the game, people came to me and said I was the shortest goal keeper and I did good and to keep it up.” While he doesn’t have a favorite World Cup team, he likes Real Madrid club and Cristiano Ronaldo is his favorite player. Like Richardson, Ramlall, was surprised to be selected. “It’s such an amazing opportunity, a once in a lifetime opportunity and it means a lot,” said the Argentina fan. “I’m looking forward to seeing some of my favorite players play and to represent the BVI and to set the right example for other young people.” Ramlall, who played football with Bregado Flax primary for three years before starting high school, said he’s looking forward to promoting the nine values of the program: tradition, peace, friendship, victory, equality, health, fairness, respect and devotion. “I would like to set the right example for people my age,” said Ramlall who finished second in an Arbor Day Poetry contest. “I’m hoping to learn new ways of improving my writing skills, because a lot of famous sports journalists will be there. Being a part of such a big event and seeing how it’s done, I hope I can use that to write way better in the future. I’d like to write short stories and write a book someday and I want to become a professional writer.” 14

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “subgris’ that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or colum within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
