Roundup This Week’s Feature Story by Laura Thomas Alton Bertie – Musical Entrepreneur As a proud Virgin Islander hailing from the eastern side of Tortola, Alton Bertie is a musician and entrepreneur who doesn’t mind calling himself a geek. But wait! He is also an Official Branson Centre Entrepreneur and is working diligently to contribute to the music industry in our region. He’s also a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA with a dual major in flim scoring and song writing. He was also a member of Shurwayne Winchester’s band for a few years and produced numerous hits for him. “Those years were beyond epic and also a great learning experience traveling and living the music business. I’ve even represented the nation of Trinidad and Tobago on a few international opportunities.” In 2008, he won the International Groovy Soca Monarch competition held in Trinidad with the song “Carnival Please Stay” by Shurwayne Winchester and won a few more awards internationally since then. Recently, he performed with the legendary Maxi Priest at the 2016 Miss BVI show. He has also performed for world leaders including Pres-

ident Obama and Hillary Clinton. Alton’s also produced or performed with various artists. He’s also done engineering work on a tracks for international stars like Ray J, Kanye West, Nas and Jay Z thanks to his connection with Clinton Sparks and BVI musician and producer Kamau Georges. He also has done sound engineering on a movie from Trinidad called “The Cutlass.” The list goes on and will continue to expand. Coming from a big musical family, Alton was determined to make music a career. Even though he resides locally he works internationally. Currently, his focus is on music for various carnivals throughout the region. His level of accomplishment might make other young professionals boastful, but Alton says for him it’s important to stay modest. “Whatever we do we have to remain humble,” he says. “Humility magnetizes people to us. Sometimes you can be the greatest but your ego pushes people and opportunities away. I am working on me. Internally and then the external will fall in place.”

Taking My Girlfriend

Dear Koren, I have been really having issues lately with my girlfriend of 10 years. We have 3 kids. She is always on the phone and it gives me trust issues. She would wake up 3am and be on social media and it makes me really uncomfortable. I have spoken to her but nothing has changed. I am not proud of everything in my past, but I have also done a lot to make our lives better. I have a job (she doesn’t), and I try give her as much as I can, but she does not appreciate it. I want to be in her and my kids’ lives, but every passing day it looks less likely. Things are going from bad to worse. Should I give her some space or hold on tighter? – Frustrated

cial media and you shouldn’t try, but you can both agree to a time to put away phones and just enjoy each other’s company, especially as it gets later in the night. Could it be that because you did your deeds in the past, there is now a rift between you two? Do you not trust her because of what you previously did when you were on your phone? It really sounds like you are trying but sometimes even when we are doing better, the effect of the past still lingers and affects the relationship. Maybe she is holding a grudge and considers this payback, or maybe she’s just bored. You need to talk with her and not to her. Don’t be judgmental or accusatory; just find out exactly what she wants to ensure that you are on the same page. Also, please consider that after 10 years and 3 children, a woman wants to know what’s next!

Dear frustrated boyfriend, First and foremost, whatever happens to you and this lady, don’t let anything keep you from being in your kids’ lives; that is not even up for discussion. Maybe if she had a job, she wouldn’t have so much time and energy to be on social media at 3am. Whether you give her space or hold her tighter also depends on what she wants. Remember, a relationship is between two persons, and you can’t hold on to someone who wants to be let go. Cell phones and social media have ended so many relationships it’s not funny. Anyone who pays more attention to their phone than their partner shouldn’t be surprised if the partner turns somewhere else for comfort. Can you find a way to let your girlfriend know that you would like to have more of her time and attention? You can’t stop her from being on soLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

Sheronda Pickering helping Hawks’ defense Coming off a season where they won the National Jr. Colleges Association Volleyball Championships bronze medal last year—their second in three years—Sheronda Pickering and the Hillsborough ComSheronda Pickering munity College Lady Hawks picked up two victories on conference play over the weekend in Florida. “Our conference is a very competitive one and we are in a very competitive state,” Pickering said. “Even though we make it out of conference, when we go to State (Championships) we’ll meet up with teams from our conference. So, it’s always a very competitive match to get out of conference and get out of State to play in the National Championships.” Last year, the Lady Hawks posted a 34-6 record and are currently sporting a 16-5 mark. They will play six or seven more games in conference, and will face St. Petersburg College today. She said other conferences have strong teams like Daytona, Palm Beach and Santa Fe. “Our coach gives us an opportunity to play them during our season so that if we have to meet up with them in the State Championships, we have an idea of their style of play,” Pickering noted. Before conference play began, the Lady Hawks, who are ranked 7th among Jr. Colleges, were well tested by some tough teams “We played Miami-Dade and it was a really Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

tough matchup for us, because one or two girls really hit the ball and we had difficulties defending them,” the sophomore middle blocker explained. “Instead of matching up to our opponent, we kind of backed down and they took three sets away from us.” Following the 20-25, 20-25 and 10-25 loss to Miami, Pickering said they entered their afternoon game with Missouri State West Plains and lost the first set lost 22-25, but they couldn’t get the Miami loss off their mind. Although they took the second set 25-18, West Plains overpowered them in the next two 15-25 and 21-25. “The ref made some calls against us and we stood up for our teammate and took the second set but somehow, we couldn’t close to finish off,” she said. “We were able to beat Palm Beach, 2523, 25-23 and 25-20. I felt we played better as a team. Our setter gave us a lot of one-on-one options and we just swung away. Palm Beach was a tough match up but we found a way to grind it out.” Comparing this with last season, the 20-yearold said she made a lot of defensive plays last year, but that her offensive game dipped a bit. This season, she continues to help her team with defensive plays, always being a blocker. “I’ve improved this year to where I’m helping my team out with offensive plays and that way the setter has more options and we’re able as a team to spread the court more,” she pointed out. “So, my game has improved and it still continues to improve as we go into the season. I’m really looking to see how much further I can develop to even be a better player.” 10
