An Ode To Cats I gave dogs all the love last week, but in my heart of hearts, I am a cat person. This hasn’t been an intentional choice, but rather something I have accepted over the years. Whether they are desperate orphaned kittens or just wander into my house, somehow as soon as one cat leaves my life, another finds me. Take the cat who lives with us now. We call her Izzy for her resemblance to a friend’s cat, but all we really know about her is that she’s been fixed. This is thanks to her clipped ear, which lets us know that she was most likely fixed by the non-profit PAW, Promoting Animal Welfare. The group helps control the unwanted animal population by fixing feral animals and those whose owners can’t afford the pet surgery, and they clip the cats’ ears so they don’t wind up bringing in the same animal to be fixed twice. Izzy adopted us, having staked her claim on the apartment before my family moved in. She was stalking around the place when we first went to see it. Once we’d moved in, she snuck inside for snuggles, so we went ahead and bought some cat food. She seems to like us: hangs around inside when we’re home, sometimes has her naps with the baby, and even lets him pet her when he’s being calm. Then again, she could be plotting to get us out of her Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

house with her frequent booby traps: she likes to leave lizard or rat carcasses on the porch and deck as though she wants us to step on them. Before that, we had Duffy. He was a scoundrel as young cat, and whenever his human mom went off island I would stay at their place. He loved to come and go all night long and bring in snakes – harmless but still alive. I had to get over my squickiness about the slithering little things to save their poor lives. Duffy became an indoor-only cat after he was diagnosed with feline immunodeficiency virus, but he was no less fearsome a hunter. Once on my watch he lounged on the enclosed patio until an unsuspecting rat wandered by. The rat never new what hit him! Duffy came to live with us after his mom moved away. Cats are notoriously territorial and locationcentered, but he actually adjusted well to his new life at our place. He survived Irma wet and unhappy but in one piece. Despite the day’s trauma, the hunting opportunities of the night called him. When he realized the window that normally kept him inside was no longer there, he ran off. I like to imagine that he kept the rat population down in that stressful post-storm period. 6

Woman Doing All The Work Hi Koren, Isn’t it abnormal if to persons are in a relationship for only one year and things are still fresh and we are both in our 30’s, that the woman always has to be the one initiating sex? Signed: The Woman Doing All the Work to Keep Things Going Dear Woman, I’m finding more and more that women are giving wife privileges to boyfriends who don’t appreciate what they are receiving, leading to frustration for the women when their expectations for something in return are not being met. Normal is relative as it depends on so many factors. Generally speaking, in most instances men in their 30s are indeed the ones who initiate physical intimacy more often and seem to need a greater quantity, while women are more concerned about the quality of it. Of course, there are always exceptions. The pattern of male-female behavior in this regard is on physiological factors as well as cultural and societal standards. So I can’t say the situation is abnormal but we can say it is unusual. With all that being said, one also has to take into consideration a man’s health status, his personality, the kind of work he does, his energy levels, his religious beliefs, and his views on the state of the relationship. All those factors and more could affect his libido and his infrequency in initiating. You used the word “always” and that’s a bit scary- I’m hoping it’s an exaggeration. When you do initiate, 11

is he often willing or do you have to work hard to persuade him? If he readily responds, then maybe it’s just the dynamic between you two and he enjoys that sort of attention. If you are constantly having to cajole, on the other hand, that could be problematic. Another possibility is that your needs and desires are just greater than his. Also, although men are perceived as mostly physical, they are mental and emotional creatures too, so if the relationship has problems, that could also be a barrier. If you are uncomfortable with your role, simply stop and see what happens. I would want to believe that he would notice the lack of attention and say or do something. If he doesn’t, then you very clearly have a problem. Just press the pause button and give him a chance to prove that he has interests too. Watch to see how he behaves in other areas of the relationship or his to see if he is just a low-energy or passive person. You could try talking about it, but men are not usually eager to speak about this sort of problem. If you do use the verbal approach, avoid blaming him or making him feel defensive by using “I” statements indicating what you would like because it makes you feel more needed or desired or whatever your reason is. Tread gently as this is sure to be a sensitive topic. Vol. 30, 12 / June 28 - July 4, 2018

Lights, Camera, Action Chapter 5: Soothing the Ache

Jazz I still can’t believe this. Last time I spoke to papa he said he was happy and that he was looking forward to my visit. He was my only family and now he’s gone. I looked up to the sky and whispered “God please give me the strength to live without my papa.” I guessed it was my karma to lose him before I was ready. I got up, stripped down, and looked at myself in the mirror. If I were 21, you’d say I looked good, but for a 35-year-old? I looked very fine indeed. Bella and my nosey friends think I’ve been faithful to one man for ages, but they have no idea. One would think that my promiscuous ways would run down this body, but my bad behavior doesn’t show on the outside. “Meet me tonight at our spot,” I texted Kevin. Kevin 9:45pm I pulled up at my destination and waited in my car waiting for Jazz. It was unusual for her to ask to meet on a Tuesday and couldn’t help but wonder what she wanted. Many things ran through my head in the meantime. It’s not that I didn’t love my wife and children, it just that I wasn’t attracted to Patricia anymore. I couldn’t bring myself to leave her because at my weakest, she stood by me, and she is a wonderful mother to our three children. I’d been seeing Jazz on the side for three years. I’m very fond of her, but it’s not love. At one point she was just one of many; I used to run a racket on my Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

wife. At 48 I could no longer keep up with various women at once, and as a matter of fact, I just didn’t have the time to. Jazz I pulled up alongside Kevin, checked my make-up and hair, and got in his vehicle. Damn this man is so sexy I wanted to forget what I called him for and jump his bones right here in the vehicle. “How was your day babes?” I asked him “My day was fine and how yours?” Kevin replied. I really came here to say that I was hurting over my papa and that I didn’t want to be alone, but all I could manage was more small talk. Maybe I will tell him what’s up another time… A few days later I walked up to Bella’s door, and because it was wide open, I walked straight in. I met her retrieving something from her fridge. “Hey chica,” I said. “Why is your door open for these nosey neighbors to see all your business?” “Girl I was sitting on the porch and had to run to the restroom and now I’m fixing myself a drink, you want one?” Bella asked. I shook my head yes. As she handed me my drink we made our way out to the wings of her porch and sat down. We engaged in girl talk as time got away from us and the sun set. 12

World Cup: Insider’s View You’re 12 and 13 years old and get the opportunity of your life—attending a football camp in Moscow, Russia—then sitting in the stands watching the Russia vs Saudi Arabia World Cup opener. Ryan Ramlall, 13, Deshawn Richardson, 12 and coach Richie Morton, were in the middle of the action. “I’ve never seen so many people in one place at the same time,” Morton said. “There were people from all over at that game—not just the countries playing—the atmosphere was just lit. I’ve never experienced anything like that.” Richardson said: “It was exciting because I got to see the plays.” He added that the size of the crowd, 78,011 people, was amazing. “Watching Russia defeat Saudi Arabia 5-0 was spectacular, especially in a stadium with over 70,000 spectators,” he said, “It was loud and intensified with excitement. I will always cherish this memory because it is highly unlikely that I will be attending another match like this soon.” Richardson, a Robinson O’Neal Sixth Grader, said his camp highlight came when he scored the second goal off a pass during a 3-1 victory in his second game. “The trip was fun and exciting, especially when I scored the goal for my team,” said Richardson, who played in five games. Since many players didn’t speak English, it was a challenge, but Richardson said he picked up skills that can improve his game from their drills. Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

“I learned how to dribble a little better now and, I learned how to do around the world,” he said. “I also learned how to kick the ball harder. I think it made me a better player because I learned things about juggling that I didn’t know.” Ramlall, a Bregado Flax Eighth Grader who attended the camp as a young journalist, said it was a ‘life-changing experience’ and that he learned about the world and its people. “This has benefitted me because I’ve learned to be more open-minded, and I hope to use the new skills I learnt from many different journalists across the globe to encourage all children in this society to be more open-minded as well,” he said. “I hope to step up to individually promote these values that I learned about.” Ramlall, who saw Richardson’s goal, said it was spectacular. “It was emotional to see a BVIslander score a goal in a big tournament like that.” He said after each game, the six young journalists in his group got together and wrote a story that was published daily. “One of the best activities I was involved with was interviewing Gelena Topilina, Rio 2016 Olympics synchronized swimming gold medalist, during a press conference,” Ramlall noted. “I asked her for inspiring words for young females aspiring to become gold medalists. Her response was; ‘believe in your dreams, and you also have to train a lot so that your dreams can become real.’” 14
