Roundup Come Chat! success for the region, said OECS Director General Dr. Didacus Jules ahead of the forum. “Education must assume a broader more inclusive role preparing Caribbean people – whether old or young, student or worker – for success in every arena,” he said. The forum will also include a panel discussion by a diverse cross-section of education stakeholders such as Caribbean Examinations Council Registrar Glenroy Cumberbatch; founder of St. Kitts International Academy Dale Amory; education advocate Jarnickae Wilson; and university hopeful Lyndel Smith, who is also a teen mom. Future meetings will be held in other OECS member states and will cover other education topics including economic equity, agriculture, regional integration, climate change and gender equity. If you’ve ever had an idea for how to improve education, this is your chance to share it, so make your voice heard.

Students, parent and teachers especially are invited to the first Vini Koze (Creole for “come chat”) public forum about education in the BVI this Friday, 13th at the Tortola Pier Park at 3pm. Hosted by Caribbean journalist and television producer Onel Sanford-Belle, the forum is part of the OECS Commission’s efforts to highlight successes and raise awareness about needed improvements in education around the Eastern Caribbean. The theme for this meeting is Education: Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, and organizers hope to learn as much as they can about achievements and opportunities for advancement within education. Specifically, they want to hear from residents about curricula, higher education, vocational training, retaining and training teachers, assisted learning and technological infrastructure. The commission has decided to focus on education because of its influence on economic

Vol. 29, 20 l Jan 12 - Jan 18, 2017

Good morning! I’m a morning person. You’re picturing it now: I get most of my important tasks done before noon; I eat proper breakfast; I wake up without an alarm. While those are all true, I have realized over the years that my particular morning-person-ness is a bit out of the ordinary because I actually enjoy getting out of bed at 5am. It may sound hard to believe, but truly, being an early riser is the best way to get the most out of island life. Here are some of my favorite things about being a morning person. 1. The roads are quiet. If I’m in the mood for a jog, dawn is the time to do it. There are few, if any, cars on the road just after 5am. At that hour, I’m about as likely to share the road with other morning exercisers as I am to share it with vehicles. 2. As a matter of fact, pretty much everything is quiet. I can sit on my front porch in the heart of Road Town and not see or hear another soul. Likewise, if you fancy a sunrise swim or surf, you won’t be competing for space with many others. If you’re a person who savors solitude, early mornings are a treat. 3. I can map out the day. Without the distractions that abound later in the day, it’s much easier Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

to set goals for myself. It’s the time I use to clear my head and prepare for whatever the day might throw at me. 4. I get things done. Sure, maybe it’s just everyday activities like cleaning out the cat’s box or running a mop around the kitchen, but something about having the whole day in front of me gives me motivation to check things off the to-do list. 5. Sunrise. Whether I’m on the road, hiking a trail or just sitting on the front porch, an island view of sunrise is sure to give me a big dose of gratitude for another day in paradise.

Love Yourself in 2017 Many of us are searching for true love and put a lot of effort into our romantic relationships, hoping that this person will be the answer to our prayers. Sometimes it works and we experience the magic of love, but other times we are left hurt, broken and angry. We ache for love and fight for love and accept all kinds of things masquerading as love because love is the one thing that all of us want. As we place ourselves into the hands of cupid for 2017, let us make some resolutions: 1. I promise to love myself. Don’t lower your standards just to have someone. No other person’s love can compensate for self-love. Of course someone else can add remarkable passion to your life, but love yourself knowing that you are enough. 2. I’m not going to fight for anyone’s love. If he is holding on to another woman, let him go. If she constantly compares you with someone else and wants you to be like him, let her go. You don’t need to constantly be physically or emotionally fighting someone else for your partner’s love. If you are not the sole object of their attention, they are not ready for a committed relationship. 3. I won’t fake love. No one is there for your convenience, so unless it is true love, let the person find someone who can give them the kind of devotion they deserve. Using someone for sex, money, status or any other reason besides genuine love is manipulative, and it robs you of the opportunity to experience a heart connection. 4. I will be fair and conscientious in handling conflicts. Love is not about winning at everything but about two persons learning to live harmoniously in spite of their differences. If

you’re constantly bringing up old conflicts, trying to out-argue your partner and holding, then you are not mature enough to handle an adult relationship and you need to recognize that making your partner feel bad will never make the relationship good. 5. I will listen. Pay attention to your partner when they speak and when they act so that you understand the person. People tell you who they are but sometimes we focus too much on who we want them to be. Listen to what makes her happy, listen to what his goals are and give him or her the kind of love that he or she needs and wants, not what you think they should have. 6. I will remember that no one is perfect. Love is about two imperfect, flawed persons coming together to find happiness. Be gentle with each other, manage your expectations, nurture and protect each other, forgive the little mistakes that your partner makes, and recognize that love is a gift. There are no guarantees in life but with the right person at your side, life can be one heck of a ride. By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

My sports wish list Over my 32 years as a sports administrator and 31 as a sports journalist, I’ve observed lots of things in sports. We’ve had growth in some areas and have not progressed very far in others. As the new year begins to unfold, I’ve penned this wish list with hope that it contributes towards some improvements in key areas. Athletes make sports and I’d like to see athletes take sports seriously. One’s playing career is only so long and the early promise demonstrated can be short lived for a number of unforeseen reasons. I’d like to see athletes in all our sports using their abilities to better themselves. Concentrate on your education. No one will hire you because you are a good shooter, blocker, scorer, sprinter, jumper, thrower or whatever. Employers want people who can do the work. Additionally, respect and manners go a long way. I wish to see parents supporting their children more and not just using sports as a babysitting service. Lots of athletes play and their parents and relatives have never seen them play. Support your own. It’s my wish that in sports we respect starting times. Too often, teams don’t show up on time ready to play, but instead, stroll in when play should be starting or even later. Look around and see how many fans are in the stands by time your game ends. The future of sports depends on youth. While times have changed and sports have been taken out of communities and centralized for a numLimin’Times Entertainment Gude

ber of years now, neighborhood sports should still continue at some level. There are more opportunities in sports but fewer people capitalizing on those opportunities. My wish is to see more sports taking place in our communities as in the past and it all starts with grassroots initiatives, particularly in team sports. There’s often a complaint about lack of facilities – but facilities doesn’t create programs. We’ve had a Multi-purpose Sports Complex for 13 years now, but still lack the programs to match it. Every country in our region has a national stadium. We, on the other hand, have a Recreation Ground. That doesn’t convey that we are at all serious about sports, even though we have athletes doing amazing things locally, regionally and internationally. Being involved in sports as long as I have, it’s one of the more frustrating things to deal with when looking at the state of our facilities. Are we really serious about sports? Action says otherwise! My wish is to see change. The importance of meetings cannot be underscored. As an umbrella body with 16 members, I wish to see our BVI Olympic Committee holding quarterly meetings and not just an Annual General Meeting as has been done over the past eight years. And for all the good or athletes and administrators do under trying circumstances, I wish to see the introduction of a sportsman and sportswoman of the year award! It’s an idea whose time has finally come. 10

Daily Sudoku: Tue 10-Jan-2017

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats within each row or column within the entire square. A partially completed grid is usually provided, which typically has a unique solution.
