“Mascara and eyeliner definitely make the eyes pop and any lip products add just a touch of glam”.
BVIslander and 20-year-old entrepreneur, Ashani ‘DJ Rookie’ Leonard, believes her love for music and opportunities to share it at family events and road trips have taken her down the road of being one of the few female DJs here in the Virgin Islands. Raised in Atlanta, Ashani started her DJ career at the age of 17 while still living in the US. When she returned to the BVI in 2017, she continued her journey and has been making her mark ever since. The young DJ told Limin’ Times that one incisive moment in her career came when the hot cue points on her computer were erased from every song and she was forced to make new ones on the spot. “When I prepare for a set I usually start with old school reggae,” DJ Rookie related. “It all depends on the crowd,” she said about playing a specific record, “I look at the Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

age range and the type of people it has in the crowd. It could have soca or dancehall lovers or people who want to hear hip-hop or reggaeton. I try my best to be diverse as possible so everyone would enjoy their time.” While she doesn’t think it’s harder because she’s a female DJ in a male dominated industry, she feels that people limit her expectations because she’s a girl. She loves seeing the crowd’s expressions and the positive words they have to say after her set. For now, DJ Rookie continues to be focused on being a disc jockey and eventually wants to start collaborating with other DJs. If you haven’t heard DJ Rookie play, you can check her out this Saturday (31st Aug.) at Caribbean Cellars’ Block party or you can check her out every Friday at Club Diplomat.

Dear Readers, this is definitely a film that proves that everyone’s taste is different. I’ve heard comments like it’s funny, not funny, thank goodness for the character Russell to keep you entertained and even one person said that they didn’t make it past 10 minutes of the movie. Being the person that I am, I like to make judgments on my own, so I went against all comments I heard and watched the movie for myself. Sextuplets is a comedy about Alan, an expectant father who grew up believing he was an only child. While searching for his birth mother, he finds out that he has a brother named Russell who unintentionally helps him uncover that there are actually six of them (all played by Marlon Wayans). They then both go on a road trip to track down their additional siblings. In the beginning of the film, Alan and his wife Marie (Bresha Webb), visit her OBGYN and find out that they are having a boy. The visit makes Alan realize that he doesn’t know anything about his family and he wants to try and find his birth mother. At a family gathering, Alan asks his father-in-law Leland (Glynn Turman) who is a judge for a favor to get his adoption papers unsealed. Although his wife’s due date is near, he takes a trip to his mother’s address and comes face to face with a brother he never knew he had. While talking to Russell, he discovers a hid11
den storage area in his dead (according to Russell) mother’s room where there are documents indicating that their mom had sextuplets and not twins. Alan calls his wife to give her an update and tells her that he will follow up leads with the address to find his other siblings. Russell then decides that he is going on this trip with Alan. The first address leads them to a prison where they find their sister Dawn. Another address leads them to find Baby Pete (a kidney thief ) in the hospital, on his deathbed. Well this is until he steals Alan’s kidney (I’ll let you watch the movie and find out how). Meanwhile, back home Jasper assumes his identity and goes to his office then visits his home, but Marie soon finds out that it isn’t her husband and he has no choice but to come clean to her. He ends up being a nice person after all, seeing Marie through in the labor room as Alan isn’t there. On the flipside, when Alan and Russell are trying to get to Marie, they are kidnapped, and the culprit turns out to be Ethan, who seems to have some major issues of his own – but someone soon fixes that. Who shows up and changes Ethan’s mind? Does Alan ever make it to the delivery room for the birth of his first son? What happens after his son is born? Sextuplets can be streamed on Netflix. Cupcakes & Cocktails Chapter 16: New Beginings
Sarah After finding out the truth about Brian’s infidelities, I filed for divorce and got everything I wanted and more. I couldn’t believe the man that vowed to love, honour and protect me did that to me. It wasn’t like I couldn’t have kids, since we were both only twenty-three when we graduated college, we decided that we would enjoy each other and establish ourselves before starting a family. That way, our kids could have a comfortable life and we would have enjoyed the best of our years before old age. For the longest time I beat myself up, not understanding why my husband felt the need to have an outside relationship. I was all any man wanted. I was educated, beautiful, kept my body right, I cooked and cleaned and I even made sacrifices helping him start his own company so he could be his own boss. Yep! You read that right. Some of the inheritance money from my parents started the company we both had together. We never wanted to work for someone forever, so we made a pact to start our company and build it up from the ground. Within four Limin’Times Entertainment Guide
years we were prospering, and even had a small staff to support us, until one major deal opened many gates for us to climb higher and in a blink of an eye we were the number one promotion company in the area. Thank goodness for Liz, with the death of Beth and my divorce, we got closer and had each other’s back through it all. I don’t think I could’ve survived any of it without her, especially since my separation was high profile because of who we were. Elizabeth What a friggin year. I had more ups and downs with Michael than I ever saw in a movie. The man was a piece of work. I would never wish that kind of treatment on my worst enemy. I wish I would’ve had the courage to leave from the very first moment he put his hands on me. I was too scared and I definitely didn’t want Beth to get in any trouble. She was a true friend. I can’t believe she is gone. Thank God for Sarah though, without her love and support I would’ve never found the strength to carrying on with life. Couple months 12

ago, the FBI found Michael’s crazy ass in a cheap motel dead with his hand cut off. My guess is that he put his hands on the wrong woman and she gave it to him. I no longer live in fear of him showing up on my doorstep. Talking about doorstep, I wanted a fresh start and had to sell my home to get rid of the bad memories. Sarah and I both sold our homes and moved into the same neighborhood for a fresh start. Our houses are across from each other on the same street and it is a gated community so the crazies can’t get in if we were to ever fall in a trap like that. *****************

Pickering Taking Volleyball Skills To Europe Sharonda Pickering became the first BVI volleyball player to sign a contract with a European club and is taking her skills to Hungary to play professionally with Haladás HSVE Sport Kft in the season that will open in the coming weeks. She departed the territory on Tuesday. While in Europe last summer with the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Volleyball team, Pickering got an opportunity to play against different European Clubs on a summer tour and later examined the possibility after helping the team to its first ASUN Conference title, first NCAA Tournament and first NCAA Tournament victory, all in program history. While home over the summer, she’d planned on going to a European draft. She sent her volleyball resume and two videos from her Eagles days to the draft coordinator, who helps recruit athletes and coaches. As it turned out, the coordinator is part of a Volleyball Agency and he told her that she’d be better off signing with the agency and drafted through the agency, rather than going directly through the draft. “I signed with them and I was being drafted from Switzerland, Hungary, Belgium, Germany and a few other places and eventually I chose Hungary and that’s how the whole thing came about,” explained Pickering, who competed in the High Jump and ran a few sprints while at the Elmore Stoutt High School. “It’s like a dream come through. It’s something you always think about, but to actually be there in the moment of actually having it come through, it’s exciting and it’s a bit nervous to go to a new and different
environment, but the thing that will keep me grounded is volleyball. It’s something that you know and not much will change with that, so I’m pretty excited about it all.” While at home, Pickering participated in co-ed volleyball matches at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, which she said was “always exciting going back from where you came” and seeing the progress. She also went to the gym to keep her muscles tuned. “It’s always a challenge playing with the men and my height gives me an advantage as the net is higher,” she noted. “That’s a challenge I always look forward to. When the net is lowered to women’s height, it’s always a good feeling. It’s always more competitive when you play with men. Men are more aggressive in their sport so it’s always interesting to come back and be able to play. The challenge is a good thing because it helps you develop as a player.” Pickering is the first BVI Volleyball player to play in the National Jr. Colleges Association Volleyball Tournament where as a freshman, she helped Hillsborough Community College Hawks to a bronze medal in her freshman year. She then helped the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles to its first NCAA Division I Tournament in her Senior year. They beat the University of Central Florida Knights in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to make program history, before losing to the Florida Gators.
