Vol. 31, 31 / Nov 14 - Nov 20, 2019

Oneyke grew up as an only child in a single parent home, where his mom saw his love for music at an early age and enrolled him in Mr. Malone’s Music School. While there, he started learning to read music and playing the piano at just six years. As he perfected his craft over the years, he began playing in church. He also started recording original songs at home. In early adulthood, he asked God to show him his purpose in life and today we have come to know him as Oneyke the gospel artist. Oneyke describes his sound as authentic and told us here at Limin’ Times that he makes music for someone who is seeking God or needs uplifting. When asked what he enjoys or hates most about being a gospel artist, he explained, “I love being able to express myself and minister in my own way. The creative process in the studio and those quiet moments with my keyboard are what keep me sane. On the other hand, my team waiting for me to hit an off note so they can record it for laughs kinda sucks.” Oneyke said one of the biggest problems he had to overcome so far is that it’s easy to start doubting your gift, but he eventually learnt that there is something special in each of us and it’s about what you are supposed to do - artist or not. So far he has won the Antigua and Barbuda Gospel Music Award for Songwriter of the year 2018/2019 as well as a Best Contemporary Song award in 2018/2019. When asked about his inspirations, his list includes Mali Music, Travis Greene, Todd Dulaney, Maranda Curtis and William McDowell. In the future he would love to make music with some of his Caribbean brothers, including Samuel Medas and Positive. Tomorrow (Friday 15th), Onyeke will release his EP entitled ‘Songs from My Heart’. To hear his music, you can find him on all streaming platforms. Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

Devious Minds Chapter 4

The triplets Diamond, Diana and Destiny were raised in a Christian home. As children, the only activities they were allowed to participate in were church and selective school activities. Their parents were devoted Christians and they wanted their children to live the same way. After the girls graduated high school, they each chose different career paths but they had one goal; no matter what, they would stick together and get the hell out of their parents’ home in order to live life as they pleased. Out of the three, Diamond never went on to college. Her love for fashion led her to land a job at a high-end fashion store in the city. For someone who loved keeping up with fashion and who had many ideas, her appearance never reflected this. After two years of working with the company, she got the courage to show her boss her designs. With luck on her side, they bought a few of her pieces and introduced them in the store in their exquisite section. This section was marketed as items the store created, so you know she was not the face of her own items. She didn’t mind, because at least her pay check reflected her work and that was all that mattered to her. Taking a glance at Diamond, you could never tell that she was a designer or even that she worked in fashion because she had no sense of style. When her boss discovered her talent, she told him that her background wouldn’t allow her to wear Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

anything fitted or revealing, but God knows that was far from the truth. When Diana graduated with her degree in Marketing, her parents beamed with pride as she was the beloved one. Growing up, she always aimed to do as her parents wished and never wanted to upset them. Although she never agreed with everything they asked of her, she never dared act out like her sisters did. Unlike Diana, neither Diamond and Destiny were pushovers. They had a mind of their own and did as they pleased, explaining why Diamond never went to college. Her parents didn’t support her dreams and refused to pay for a degree in fashion. Destiny, like Diana, was also a college graduate. She studied Education and worked as a pre-school teacher for the last four years. At her school she was loved by her students and befriended most of her coworkers. Although she was more outspoken than her other sisters, being one of the youngest staff members meant she never had the courage to bring her ideas to the board. Instead, she confided in her closest colleague who in turn would bring the ideas up in meetings and took all the credit without acknowledging where the idea and recommendation for change came from. After the third time, Destiny got mad but because she didn’t have courage to step on the older toes, she looked at it as a way to accomplish what needed to be done. 12

The Path to Peace As we have discovered, the world can be a crazy place. Just turn on the television for 5 minutes and we will see. However, one of the lessons we can learn from philosophers is that we can turn inward sometimes to find peace and focus on what we have control over. Instead of letting all the external stuff bother us, we have to practice occasionally tuning it out. One of my favourite quotes is the serenity prayer that says, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference. Persons in recovery from alcohol or drug dependence use this as their mantra and it is so helpful. How can we then apply it to our lives? • Accept things over which we have no control. We fight and fight and beat ourselves up over things that we can’t change – how people behave, who our family are and other things. We might not like some things, but acceptance means we stop focusing on it and getting headaches over it, especially knowing that there is nothing we can do about it. 13

• Do what we can to make our lives better. If we are bothered by our weight or our job or our salary, we can do something about that, even though it might take some time. Make a list of the things that affect you and for each one, create an objective and a set of goals that will take you from where you are to where you want to be and enlist support if necessary to make those dreams a reality. • Be smart about our capabilities. We can acknowledge what our strengths are and what we can do to improve our lives and put aside issues like who people are and what they are doing and what the weather is and all these other things that we allow to penetrate our minds and disrupt our peace. Of course, there are many more life lessons that we can adopt to help us as we seek to thrive on a daily basis and whatever has worked, we can continue to do, while we seek to improve. ............................................... Last Busy Sports Weekend Of 2019 With the sporting season coming to a close, there is a six course sports offering on the last busy weekend of 2019 for sports junkies. What’s on the menu? Basketball, road racing, softball, sailing, triathlon and horse racing. Kicking off activities is Friday night’s Hon Julian Fraser Save The Seed Basketball League at the Save The Seed Energy Center. With Willful Skillful ousting Young Stars and Shooting Starz knocking out Jr. Bayside Blazers, Skillfull Ballers who has a 1-0 lead in their best of three playoffs will seek to eliminate defending champions Bayside Blazers in the senior division, while 2018 runners up Pure Playaz, will try to do the same to 79. The championship could possibly start as early as Saturday. Then on Saturday morning, the curtains will come down on the Ceres Juices 10K Series in the first of three sports activities for the day. Action will start with a 6 a.m. registration before runners depart at 6:30 from the Watering Hole, head to Sea Cows Bay and return for the 6.2-mile jaunt. Afterwards, there will be an awards ceremony in the series finale, which is also the final tune up for the 14th Deloitte-Ogier BVI Sunrise Half Marathon on Nov 30. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, avid and skillful sailors will participate in the 49th Nanny Cay Round Tortola Race. The traditional course, required for those attempting the Nanny Cay Challenge for the Round Tortola Record, takes the fleet anti-clockwise around Tortola, leaving Beef Island, Scrub Island, Great Camanoe

and Guana Island, to port. An alternative course was introduced in 2016, offering competitors more tactical choices with the option to choose their route around Scrub, Great Camanoe and Guana after leaving Beef Island to port. The final stretch of the race will see the fleet pass Steele Point, wiggle through Sopher’s Hole before returning to the Nanny Cay finish. The course offers racing, cruising and multihull classes. Final registration takes place at the Nanny Cay Beach Bar from 5:30-7 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday following the race at the same place. Just up the road from Nanny Cay, action will continue in the Allington Hodge Village Softball League at the Roger Allen Hodge Park on Saturday afternoon. Pleasant Valley will face Albion followed by Parsons and Cherry Ghut. There are no games on Sunday. At 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, triathletes will take to the water at the foot of the airport for the BVI Triathlon Federation Steelman competition. This event entails a 1500m swim, 40K cycle and a 10K run. The busy weekend closes with horse racing as 29 horses from Tortola and St. Thomas battle for $50,000 in prizes in six races. Totally Evil, Courage & Honor, Salsa Jack and Thulean will battle for the lion’s share of $12,000 in the feature race. Post time is 1:15 pm.
