Summer At Myett’s Cane

Myett’s is also bringing some extra fun to your Sunday fun day beginning at brunch with bottomless mimosas and their monthly end of month Art Show & Wine Tasting in the Garden from 1–5pm. While listening to the pan-tastic sounds of Akim Johnson on steel pan you can enjoy local art, craft and produce. There is also a wine tasting and brunch specials. Don’t forget Marcus Mark will rock the house like only he can from 7pm. For Myett’s Cane Garden Bay full daily offerings and specials, please check our middle pages (6-7). You can also contact them by calling 4959649.

Unlike many places that close for ‘slow season,’ our friends at Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay stay open for business all year long. While every one is shouting end of summer, things are only now getting heated as weekends at Myett’s are all fun and excitement. Kicking the weekend off on Friday is their ‘Tribal Night’ and this Friday their celebration is on the beach. Enjoy one or more of their many drink specials from Vishaal at the beach bar which opens at 5pm. CJ the DJ will be providing the music, and if drums are your thing, look no further, they’ve got that covered too! There’s also going to be bonfire on the beach and a fire show by Purafire fire dancers at 10pm. On Saturdays Evolution Band rocks the house from 7pm. You can also enjoy their inhouse BBQ specials.

Baby Traditions Since anybody who sees me these days can immediately tell, I think it’s safe to let the cat out of the bag: Come September I’m expecting my first island baby. Now that the pregnancy is pretty far along, people are really starting to notice when they see me – and boy do some of them have a lot to say! It turns out that there are loads of old wives tales, superstitions and traditions about pregnancy and babies that I had no idea existed until now. One common theme has to do with “marking the baby,” or doing something that will lead to a child being born with a birthmark. Among the things that might mark your child are bumping into something, which in theory leads your baby to be born with a mark on the corresponding spot on their body; or denying yourself a food you’re craving while pregnant and then scratching yourself. If my child is born with a birthmark that looks like a carne asada taco, everyone will know why. Another theme has to do with predicting the sex of the baby. Friends from the United States swear that because my “baby bump” is visible right under my ribs, my baby will be a girl. Meanwhile, friends from the Dominican Republic think the opposite: most of Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

the extra weight I’m carrying is located around my hips, which, they say, means the baby will be a boy. A few different friends have also predicted a boy, but for entirely different reasons: a girl baby makes the mother sick and miserable, the thinking goes, and I’m having entirely too pleasant of a pregnancy for this not to be a boy child. Since I’m waiting until the baby’s birthday to find out the answer, it’s easy to nod along with everybody’s predictions. My favorite Caribbean baby related traditions are the ones that have echoes in other cultures. For example, it’s common to hear folks in the BVI say that the first time you meet a child you should “put something in their hand.” This is a polite way of saying that you should give the baby some cash. The literal blessing you give the child helps make sure he or she will be blessed with good fortune. This is very similar to a tradition among Filipinos that says that the first time a baby visits your house you should give them cash, although my understanding from the Filipino “aunties” who did this when I was growing up was that giving cash to the baby would bring the giver the good fortune. 8

Warm Blooded Woman Dear Koren, Why is it that men think they are the only ones with active sex drives? My husband and I are Christians and every time I initiate sex he enjoys it, but then makes some kind of comment about my past. I have two children from before we were married, but sometimes I think he wishes that my first time was with him. Other partners made me feel like I was exciting when I initiated things, but he acts like I’m taking his masculinity or something. Should I be less aggressive in this area of our relationship? – Warm blooded woman Dear Warm blooded woman, You and millions of women around the world are brave and self-aware enough to accept who you are; however many men and women walk around (and lie down!) with the erroneous view that women are lower on the hotness hierarchy than men. Fallacy. Don’t dim your lights to fit into anyone’s image of who you should be. In time, hubby will learn to accept who you are. Maybe it’s just not what he’s used, to or perhaps he has some old-fashioned mindset about how a woman is supposed to be. It sounds like he us experiencing his own inner conflict and his thoughts might go from “I am the luckiest man in the world,” to “Is this unsubmissive for a wife?” and then back to “I don’t have to beg and bargain like other men.” Unless he raises it as a problem, leave it alone. If he brings it up, listen to what he has to say and then find a way to meet him halfway while still being yourself. You know your husband so you will have an idea what makes him feel like a man. Even if you like to take charge in this area, allow him to take the lead

sometimes. Ensure also that you give him the respect he deserves in other areas of his life. I know sometimes you will feel badly about these comments you mentioned, so ask him to stop. You also said he enjoys it so focus on that. Don’t allow his occasional reaction or what you think he wanted to make you feel insecure. He knew who you were before he married you, yet he chose you. You are his wife and you alone have the license to rock his world. Stop over thinking it, accept who you are, and thank God you were created the way you were: many women wish they had what you have naturally, so enjoy it!

Learning Lessons From Losing When coach Derwin Scatliffe was putting the U-17 Girls team together for the territory’s debut in the Aug 13-19 Centrobasket Tournament that was held in Puerto Rico, he faced a number of challenges. “I’d be lucky if I had a day when I had five players every day. It was rough.” he said. “I even had morning practice for those players who had to babysit or go to work in the afternoon, so I might have three or four players in the morning and a different four in the afternoon, so it has been difficult.” The results showed as the team returned winless, following a 101-54 loss to El Salvador; 98-35 to Guatemala; 110-29 to Mexico, a 79-60 setback to the Bahamas and an 86-41 meltdown to Suriname. One of the team’s telling tales was turnovers. 44 against El Salvador; 52 to Guatemala; 44 vs Mexico; 21 to the Bahamas and 51 against Suriname. While the team showed a lot of heart, particularly in the Mexico game, Scatliffe said they weren’t fit. “The girls were tired,” Scatliffe said of the second half meltdown against Suriname where they were outscored 46-13 in the second half, after trailing 16-13 at the end of the first period. “They were on empty. They couldn’t find the energy to warm up.” Despite losing all their games by lopsided scores, Scatliffe said it was a lesson for the CenLimin’ Times Entertainment Guide

trobasket debutants that will help them in the future. “Basketball requires fitness, speed, strength, a high IQ and discipline,” he said. “If you really want to go far in this sport to at least earn a scholarship, those are the ingredients.” Captain Shauliqua Fahie who was the top scorer in every game, said while it was a good tournament, all the teams were quicker than the BVI. “They out ran us and were in better shape than us,” she pointed out. “How they out ran us, showed us that we need to get in better shape and we can also steal some of their plays.” The reason for the high number of turnovers she said was simple: A lack of fitness was one reason. “We were getting tired quickly,” Fahie observed. “And when you’re tired, you do a lot of stupidness with the ball.” Fahie said they now understand that they have to take practices seriously and try to get in better shape so that other teams won’t overrun them. What was the team’s sentiments after the tournament? She noted that her teammates have now bought into the concept of becoming fitter. “They don’t want to lose the way we did there. They don’t want that to happen again.” Fahie’s advice to players who would be going to the tournament in the future: “Stay focused. Do what you have to do but most importantly, get in shape.” 10
