So, I took a few days off over the holidays, and as you know school was out. Unfortunately for me, I got sick so I was stuck in the house. Last week when I started to feel a little better, down came the rain and cancelled any late plans I made. Last Friday, when the sun came out, I decided to take the kids outside to ride their bikes. What a disaster it turned out to be, yet at the same time, it was still a hilarious afternoon. While my son was off elsewhere on his bike, I was trying to teach my daughter how to ride. After a few minutes of teaching her how to peddle, I told her to ride around and I’d stand up at the bottom to protect her, since the driveway has a kind of slope, if she comes that way. Big mistake. The little lady soon discovered that coming down the driveway just cruising with no hands felt like way more fun to her than peddling. She next upgraded and stuck her feet out, gliding all the way, just because she knew I’d be there to catch her. When I couldn’t take any more of it, I grabbed her and took her out on the road which forced her to peddle. Even as I was holding the bike, she preferred to be pushed as if she was on a swing. Speaking of swings, after a half hour of bike ridding lessons, I parked the bikes and we walked down the hill to the park. There we found three Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

older children playing. After playing alone for a few, my little miss brave and friendly walked up to the older children and asked them is she can also play with them. They said yes. Being the protective mother, I kept a close distance allowing her to play but making sure that she didn’t do anything to hurt herself or get hurt because they were playing this game called ‘Ninja’. It’s where one person is it and if the ninja tags you, it will be your turn to be it. What I must say, is that children are so amazing because those kids did not know who my daughter was but they allowed her to play with them and also, they protected her as if she was their little sister the entire time. I later found out that the children live close to the park and go there regularly. On our way home, my mini me demanded that I take her there regularly too, so she could play with those nice ‘big kids’ as she calls them. So I guess, we’ll be heading to the park this weekend and hopefully our timing will be right and she gets to see them again.

I recently found out that a lot of our readers are into African films. As for me, if I find a good one, I’d watch it, but to say they are my first choice, I’d be lying. Since Netflix is my main source of movie watching, by Old Year’s, I had already watched all the Christmas films I could’ve found. During a search for something to watch I came across the Nigerian Movie Potato Patahto. It’s about a divorced couple who decides to share equal space in their ex-matrimonial home when they soon realize that the ingenious idea is easier said than done. Bent on flexing their egos and scoring points, the two employ various hilarious tactics that soon inflame emotions and turns an already complicated situation into a roller coaster ride. After divorce Tony (OC Ukeje) and Lulu (Joselyn Dumas) each occupy one of the bedrooms and share the kitchen half and half. If one was in the sitting room, the other would not enter. This retarded arrangement did not apply to Mrs. Wilson, Lulu’s Mom (Joke Silva), when she came to visit because she refuses to act like a child. One day, even though she knew the couple was divorced, she still brought enough food for both her daughter and ex-sonin-law. When she got in the kitchen, she fixed Tony a plate and put extra in a dish so he could have for another time. He was so scared to accept the food just to avoid drama with Lulu, that Mrs. Wilson scolded him. 11

Soon, the ex-couple each decide to hire a help. Tony’s helper is the first to be hired and it is the young beautiful Mirian (Nikki Samonas). Shortly afterwards, Lulu’s help Gabby (Chris Attoh) arrives. I truly believe Lulu hired a young handsome man to get under her ex-husband’s skin. Tony then catches both of their maids in bed together and fires them both. A plan Lulu believes Tony orchestrated to get rid of her help. Tragedy soon strikes as Fred (Blossom Chukwujekwu), Tony’s friend’s wife ends up in the hospital fighting health complications. This brings the former couple close for a mere minute. One day, Tony comes home after his ex-wife realises that he has broken their agreement to discover the locks on the house are changed. After a period of being petty, Lulu tries to let him in only to be greeted with an unwanted guest. Their ex-helpers Gabby and Mirian invade their space with the intention of robbing them but because of Gabby’s idiocy, things don’t go as planned. Eventually Lulu can’t take things anymore and moves out of the house. One day she returns for some things she left behind and finds Tony with company. What did Gabby do to spoil the robbery and who did Lulu find in Tony’s company and what does it mean? Potato Patahto can be streamed on Netflix. Vol. 31, 38 / Jan 9 - Jan 15, 2020

Devious Minds Chapter 11

“Well this is as holy looking as I can get,” Diana thought to herself as she gave herself one last look over before she headed over to her parents. They had invited her to dinner, telling her that there was someone they wanted her to meet. Thinking it was just some member from the church, she made sure not to put on anything that was tight or may reveal anything to embarrass her parents. When she arrived at her parents, her mouth dropped to see who was sitting on their couch. It was ‘pissy’ Thomas from Sunday school when she was younger. Diana disliked Thomas not only because he was annoying to her but because one social night at the church, he peed himself and she sat in it not knowing what he had done until her sister told her. From then onwards, she never even said hi to him. His little stunt humiliated her and for a long time, it was always brought up at church functions for a good laugh. Her parents knew this too, so why would they have him here? “Diana! Hi, it’s me Thomas from Sunday School when we were kids, you remember me?” Thomas jumped up to greet Diana as he saw her come into her parent’s house. “Of course, I remembered you idiot,” Diana thought to herself then she said out loud, “Yes I did, how are you? When did you get back in town?” “Last week, now that we are settled, your parents invited us over to dinner,” he replied. “We? Who else is here?” Diana asked Thomas. “Oh my mom, she moved back too. After I finished college, I told her I got a job back home and I’m moving back. Since dad died, she decided she Limin’Times Entertainment Guide

will come also, since it’s her hometown and all,” Thomas informed her. “Oh nice, you’re here, will you both join us at the dining table,” Diana’s mom interrupted the pair. “Thank God, I was getting tired of making small talk because I was ready to walk back out the door when I saw who the dinner guest was,” Diana thought to herself. After greeting Thomas’s mom, dinner began with a prayer by David, Diana’s dad. The group was just eating and making small talk until Thomas’ mom said, “So Diana, are you married, is there someone in the picture?” Mrs. Andrews asked. “Oh no, I’m not dating at the moment and don’t plan too, right now while I’m trying to get my career off the ground,” she replied. “Nice, a woman got to build herself up and not rely on any man,” Mrs. Andrews replied. “Thomas here, will be starting at the marketing firm downtown next week, what…” she continued but before she could finish Diana cut her off asking which firm, praying it’s not the one she works at. “Over at KBK,” Thomas replied for his mother. At this point Diana was doing cart wheels inside because she was happy they weren’t working together and his office was on the other street across from her. KBK was actually her firm’s competitors. The night went by with Diana’s mother trying to push her and Thomas to speak but Diana wasn’t having any of it. Once she got home, Diana messaged her mother saying “God don’t like ugly,” then turned off her phone so her mom couldn’t call her back. 12

A Good Start Most people these days are not bothering with setting any resolutions at the beginning of the year because they realize that frequently, by March, they would have slipped off the path of good intentions. However, even when we don’t make a written list and call it resolutions, our minds invariably tend to think, “I will do better this year”. Whether it be to lose weight, save more money, change jobs or even to walk away from a toxic relationship most of us can easily think of things we want to start doing, stop doing or to change. The good thing is that every single day gives us a clean slate. I know some of our past mistakes and bad choices are ever around to haunt us and remind us of our poor decisions. However, in spite of that, we can still have a positive start to each day that will greatly impact the direction of our thoughts, our feelings and our ensuing actions and behavior. It may or may not reverse some of the pending negativity. Here are some ways to start the day so that the outcome benefits you for the long-term: • Hydrate. It’s important to start the day with water to replace what we would have lost during the night and to provide a cleanse for our bodies. • Read something positive. Before we jump into news and emails, it’s helpful to read something inspiring and uplifting that really adds value to our day. • Repeat your affirmations. Be clear on what you want from life by repeating positive affirmations. 13

“Today I will be optimistic”, “today I will attract good vibes”; whatever works for you. • Stretch and Exercise. A nice good stretch will increase our flexibility and exercise helps many persons with increased energy. • Plan your day. If you don’t decide what you want your day to look like, then you are leaving it up to whatever happens and that is a recipe for confusion. Everything might not go according to plan, but it’s better to have one, than none at all. • Have a healthy breakfast. We need fuel for our day and breakfast provides that for us. • Have an attitude of gratitude. Being thankful for what we have and who we are before we even leave the house changes our whole perspective. It is the minutes that make hours and the hours that make days and the days that make weeks and months and so on. Before you know it, a full year would have passed and you will be able to look back and feel a sense of satisfaction that something good has come out of the previous 365 days.

How Irma Changed The Sports Landscape It’s approaching 2½ years since hurricane Irma caused major destruction to the territory and its infrastructure on Sept 6, 2017. Sporting facilities were among those hard hit. Despite what’s happening with track and field and our international success, of one was to take a critical analysis, they’d observe that softball, basketball and swimming in particular, have been down since the killer storm. Softball was the last sport to see action just three days before Irma hit. Where is it now? “It has been really devastating and it has slowed things down a lot and we’re trying to play catch up,” Softball Association president Terry “Chino” Chinnery said. “In the different islands, the young kids are playing softball and we have to play catchup when we start again. It has been really devastating but, we’re trying to get back on track.” Getting the fencing and backstop up, Chinnery noted, is their biggest challenge. “We’ve gotten the lights, but we need the fencing up because there’s a large outcry in the community for industrial and fast pitch softball.” BVI Swimming Federation president Elsworth Philip said that Irma naturalized their program to a point where they don’t have a place for the locally based athletes to train. “For me, it’s a major disappointment because we had a very young and vibrant group of kids who were really interested in being developed to go on to further things as it relates to progressing in the sport,” he said. “I’m still optimistic that something can be done, something will be done.” While Prospect Reef has been destroyed, he said the pool

is still in good condition. If the area is isolated and cleaned up, they can resume training. Phillip noted that a youngster who trained with him is now the top swimmer in Guyana. “It’s just in my opinion, a testament to our little development program and giving the kids exposure to a sport and opportunities that they wouldn’t typically get,” he said. “I’m hoping that eventually, something can be done as far as getting our locally based program back up and running. How about Volleyball? “Irma has really impacted Volleyball because our home base is the gym, the building is hot and there are no windows that can be opened, so ventilation is bad,” Association president Willis Potter noted. “We’ve taken to the beach, started in Brandywine Bay. Players came initially but have fallen off because Brandywine Bay is not a beach for swimming. We have a net on Beef Island that’s heavily used. Volleyball has also been [hit] severely, especially with sponsorships.” Potter said he’d like to see monies infused into sports as that area has been neglected. “There are so many things that we can do in sports, but monies need to be infused so our athletes can get good training,” he said. “We have been doing this without financial backing. Other countries are putting money into sports, that’s why they compete at a higher level.”
