Dancer’s Delight Amanda Georges founded Frangipani because she has a passion for dance and movement and wants to share it with others. Her studio creates a safe environment for expression through movement, and many people may also find this type of exploration therapeutic. A lifelong dancer, Amanda has also taught at the BVI Dance School and Firebird Performing Arts. She is the co-artistic director of the CADA Players, choreographing, dancing and performing with them since 2011. This group raises funds for charitable causes and organizations in the BVI and the rest of the Caribbean. Frangipani provides fun movement options for an active healthy lifestyle as well as creative movement activities. The studio is located in Chalwell Estate and it offers adult classes in ballet, contemporary dance, plus, for those who want to incorporate something a bit more acrobatic, gyrokinesis, aerial yoga and aerial dance. Aerial dance classes are offered for children eight and older. Aerial Yoga is a total body workout for balance, flexibility, harmony and positive energy.

Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on the town.” Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands English Creole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news about when and where to “lime” in the British Virgin Islands.

Dance is an outlet for creative expression through movement with energy, stamina and grace. Gyrokinesis exercises allow one to strengthen the entire body through spinal movement as well as joint articulation. It’s also accessible to anyone and does not require any acrobatic ability. It is great for anyone even with no movement experience. “I do it with my 70+ year old mom as it is very good for increasing mobility,” Amanda mentioned. Aerial Dance explores movement in three dimensions, challenging the dancer’s strength and flexibility. Classes in aerial dance or yoga are $25 and gyrokinesis is $15 per session. Pre-registration is required for all classes. To view classes schedule please visit https:// frangipanibvi.punchpass.com. Between the gorgeous weather, the beautiful beaches, brilliant flora and all the amazing watersports, it’s no wonder the film industry loves to shoot movies set on islands. This week, have a look at some of the best movies that give viewers a “Hollywood” view of island life.

As the only face on screen for most of the film ¬– he remains on the island alone for years – Hanks is brilliant at showing what solitude can do to a person. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl The first in the franchise that won’t end was also the best, in part because the notion of cursed pirate’s treasure is a solid storytelling device (and the entirety of the film’s connection to the Disneyland ride of the same name). Released in 2003, it ostensibly takes place in and around Jamaica. Filming of this historical fantasy was on soundstages and a gorgeous beach in St Vincent. Full of ghostly sailors, at-sea intrigue, and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor, it’s a fun diversion of a movie.

Island in the Sun Filmed in Barbados, this drama came out back in 1957, and the story will feel familiar to those of us that follow regional politics and the lasting legacy of colonialism. It stars Harry Belafonte (he also recorded a song by the same name for the film) as a rising star of politics, seen by some members of the white ruling class as a threat. The film also features Dorothy Dandridge, famous for being the first African American nominated for an academy award for best actress. I know most movie fans will have seen this one already – The movie studio is literally pushing for it to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination! ¬– But if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? The latest in Marvel’s jump from the comic book page to the silver screen is a fun watch, full of an all-star cast, a nice mix of action and drama, and a sprinkling of Marvel in-jokes for the die-hard fans. Black Panther begins basically before humanity, with the landing of a meteor made of vibranium in the African country of Wakanda. Armed with a mountain full of the substance, Wakanda sprints past the rest of the world when it comes to technology of all kinds, but isolates itself from the war, colonialism, and other general ick of the world by keeping their miracle material and all it’s capabilities a secret. Basically, they’re incognito as a humble nation of farmers. From there, the movie sets us up with the knowledge that there is a black market in vibranium, and that Wakanda’s king, T’Chaka, has unearthed his brother’s plot to supply it to a nasty arms dealer. The conclusion of their conflict is left up in the air, as we next travel forward in time more than 20 years to T’Chaka’s death, and to his son T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returning home to become the new king of Wakanda. There’s a few great moments early in the movie 11

between T’Challa and his tech wiz sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), and between both kids and Wakanda’s Queen Mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett). Naturally, we need some traditional combat to make sure T’Challa is fit to be king, and, on the other side of the world, the introduction of a young man who doesn’t seem Wakandan, but knows enough about the country to school a white museum curator about some artifacts taken from Benin. Come to find out, Erik “Killmonger” Stevens is a badass military man affiliated with the CIA, but, he’s also T’Challa’s cousin, and wants his shot at the throne of Wakanda. Although Killmonger makes a solid case for Wakanda abandoning its isolationist practices and reaching out to support other African nations and the diaspora – one also made elsewhere in the movie by T’Challa’s sweetheart Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) – it’s clear he is a bad dude. Bad enough, it turns out, that Wakanda is on the brink of a messy civil war after his challenge. How will T’Challa hang on to his crown in the face of such a formidable adversary? Will Wakanda and its fabulous technology stay hidden away from the rest of the world? Black Panther will be available for streaming on Netflix on Sept. 4. Vol. 30, 21 / Aug 30 - Sep 5, 2018

Dear Diary Sunday

I still hate mornings, but managed to get out of bed after only two slaps of the snooze button on my alarm this particular day. I had promised myself that I would attend service today because I hadn’t been in a long time. I managed a shower, and, after my usual long deliberation over a small collection of clothing, I settled on the blue floral dress that was already ironed, did my hair and makeup left. I was greeted by Sister Donna, the one person I didn’t want to see at all. She always acted holierthan-thou and I was not in the mood for her comments. I hailed her and sped off to find a seat before she could start running her mouth. The sermon touched my soul. Everything I was going through was in that message. I left church feeling alive and made a mental note to return next week – No excuses! I normally would eat Sunday lunch by my mom, but since she was out of state for a few days, I decided to head to the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. I had just gotten my salad and was sitting in the booth when I felt as if someone was staring at me. I shrugged off the feeling and kept eating my salad while gazing around not focused on anything in particular. When I got up to go the buffet for the rest of my lunch, I had the feeling of being watching again and I looked around again to see if anyone I know Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

was there, but there were no stares, just people minding their own business. I got my lunch and walked over to the dessert section to get my dessert one time. When I returned for my beverage, I bumped into a man. I apologized and started to turn back to my table, but to my surprise he kept talking to me. He said he noticed that I was there alone, said that he was too, and asked if he could join me. Between my post-church positive mood and knowing that in that crowded public place it wasn’t like he could do me any harm, I figured, what the heck. I told him sure. Once he came over to my booth and saw I had my dessert, he decided that he would get his one time too so he wouldn’t have to get up again. Our conversation was nice. I learned that he is single and looking, no kids. He just bought his own condo and he works for the marketing agency in the building across the street from my office. I told him I was single but not really looking for anything, about my job, and about how I have my own home that I inherited from my grandma. I don’t even know what else we talked about, but we were so caught up in our conversation that we kept right on talking for an hour after we had eaten. We decided to exchange numbers and keep in contact. 12

5 Questions to Ask Your Partner I don’t think that anyone can deny the importance of communication in a relationship. Not only is it a good thing to share your feelings and other information, but it’s also a wonderful thing to listen to your partner. By listening, I mean letting them talk without interruption and ensuring that he or she feels safe being really expressive with you. Listening also involves being observant of body language and mood as people communicate in a variety of ways. To stimulate discussion and to increase understanding, here are five questions to ask your partner: What are some of your struggles? Listen carefully to your partner’s answers. You can follow up by asking if he or she would like to discuss options for overcoming these challenges. When we know why someone is struggling or what they are struggling with, it helps us to understand them on a deeper level, and that understanding can ease their burden. What does a happy day for you look like from beginning to end? This is a perfect way to know what matters to your partner and what brings them joy. Make mental notes so that when you have the time, you can help to do some of these things that your partner likes. This also helps your partner to clarify what they want out of their days within their own mind. It’s easier to work towards creating good days if we know what they look like. In what ways do you feel my love? Imagine the

glow on your partner’s face, when you ask this question. Retelling what makes them feel loved recalls a blissful moment, plus, now you don’t have to guess which of your actions and words really work. You are hearing it directly from the horse’s mouth so you know what you are doing right. What are some of your goals and dreams? Everyone has things in life they hope to achieve and aspire to, and for many, it’s what drives them. Pay attention and be as supportive as you can. The answer will open up a discussion that helps you to see your partner’s life purpose, and if they don’t know, at you could help them to discover it. What can I do to help you feel more appreciated? This one is hard and scary because the answer might sound like criticism, but it will also help you be a better partner. We get so caught up in our work and personal lives, that sometimes we take each other for granted. Knowing how you can help your partner to feel more appreciated will increase the love and goodwill in your relationship. Of course, these are most useful in a long-term or permanent relationship where you are truly invested in each other. Open the doors to each other’s heart and walk right in. Try to feel what each other is feeling and truly understand your partner. As you journey together, communication helps you to become closer.

Basketball Kicks off Fall Sports Calendar The traditional slow quarter of the sports calendar has arrived, but there are several activities on the horizon that were completely wiped out in 2017. The 2018 Track and Field season will start winding down with Kyron McMaster competing in the Diamond League 400m Hurdles final today, as he seeks to defend his title. His biggest challenger in the competition in Zurich, Switzerland, will be Norway’s Karsten Warholm, the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations World Champion, who has a best of 47.64 seconds (McMaster’s best is 47.54). They are currently ranked No 3 and No 4 respectively, on the IAAF list. McMaster will wrap up the 2018 season as part of the Americas Team in the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic, September 8-9. He will be one of the team’s two representatives in the 400m Hurdles and will meet some of his Diamond League foes as they compete for prize money in both events. The Continental Cup will feature teams from the Americas, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Europe. Locally, the basketball calendar opens with Friday’s kick off of the Hon. Julian Fraser Save The Seed Basketball League. Action will run through October, with games will be played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. ries—wiped out last year by Irma—is slated to kick off on Sept 22, at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College campus in Paraquita Bay. Stay tuned for the announcement of all the races on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Road Racing Following a summer break, road racing action resumes on October 6, with the next stop of the Ceres Juices 10K Series scheduled for Carrot Bay. Registration convenes at 6 am with the race starting at 6:30. Participants can also register in advance on www.webscorer.com. The final race in the series, also a tune-up run for those training for the BVI Half Marathon, will be at 4 pm Nov. 10, from the Watering Hole. The 2018 road racing season ends with the 13th BVI Half Marathon on December 1 and officials are already gearing up for the event which last year, despite Irma, carried out a very well executed looped course race. Football Football lovers can look forward to the return of both schools football and the national football league, which are being planned for late October. The BVI Sr. Men’s team will be playing in the inaugural CONCACAC Nations League. The team travels to Martinique on Sept. 11 for the first of its four games, two away and two at home. They will play in Suriname on Oct. 13, before hosting Bonaire on Nov. 16 and the Turks and Caicos Islands on March 21. 14
